Bolstering the attack quickish

769

With 26 career goals, 25 of which came in a Dundee United shirt, £1.5m sounds a tad generous for Nadir Ciftci.  Celtic’s earlier offer of £900k sounds more like the mark but Wigan have validated United’s target price with a deal with meets their requirements, if not that of the player’s.

Is he a player to improve Celtic?  Quite possibly, he’ll bring something we don’t have at the moment – a sticky out ball – but it’s a big ask to expect him to step up to Champions League levels.  Signing that level of player might take Champions League money, but we’ll need to get there first, which is why we need to bolster the attack quickish.

Two years ago we talked about the number of senior games a good player is able to make before he’s noticed by those to rich and lazy to do as much low-level research Celtic must do to unearth a gem.

Victor Wanyama made 51 appearances before becoming a Celtic player, Virgil van Dijk made 62.  It’s likely both spent the bulk of those games without anyone paying much attention to them, Celtic’s scouts are likely to have been alerted when they have little more than a dozen or so games left at their previous clubs.

Ciftci’s made 67 senior appearances.  If he has what it takes, the world will know about it sooner rather than later.

I don’t think as a player Stokes has improved under Ronny but I do think his work ethic has.

Adam Matthews was a much better example of asset management, shrewd asset management . I think he’ll struggle in a poor EPL side just my opinion.

Your second question is much better.

  3. Bourne

Yep certainly. RD is hopeful that the fitness regime they have JF under that will minimise his injuries.

A better player? Hopefully this season will confirm that.

    Johanson and Britton agreed.

Are the others still with us ?

  5. TT,

I believe the get out of Scotland is the one issue that is not as easy as simply buying another club or transferring membership and one thing I think they would have done everything if they possibly could have, just think of the financial rewards, and my argument is that those are what they spend too much of their time concentrating on.

My biggest issue is they have spent all their energy telling us why we need to be shite instead of trying to mitigate our predicament. Listening to the same crap that we can’t attract the players or compete with Eastern Europe or the championship for talent while maintaining 45 player squads has become a self fulfilling prophecy.

  6. Re Souness, I’ve mentioned on here before that he was at Celtic as a boy. Story I heard was that he got into a bit of a fight, lost and like a big girl never came back.

Eh aye apart from Denayer unless we’ve sold 6 players overnight and nobody has tel’t me!

I would suggest Fisher, Biton and Griffiths are decent shouts for improved players under RD, which probably suggests they will all be sold in the next twelve months. Cynical? Moi?

The 11th night is a biggie here in the North its when THEY light their bonfires and sing their songs about King Billy and the like

I remember one year they had a flag of Henrik at the top

Why burn wee Henrik?? What did he ever do??

Maybe its because hes the real KING

  13. I wouldn’t give him Fisher to be honest I think the bhoy would have progressed under McCoist

How much would it take for us to sell Nir orJoe ?

Johanson’s improvement is due to the team being somewhat setup for him. Nir needed a run of games. LG also.

The whole team improved once they started to catch onto Ronnies way of playing. Which will always be a problem in Europe with “projects” and an overt game plan and personell.

For the record I dont see much improvement in individuals.

    “endorse” ?

    en·dorse  (ĕn-dôrs′) also in·dorse (ĭn-)

    tr.v. en·dorsed, en·dors·ing, en·dors·es also in·dorsed orin·dors·ing or in·dors·es

    1.

    a. To express approval of or give support to, especially by public statement; sanction: endorse a change in policy; endorse a political candidate.

There are a myriad of issues I am powerless to address. Am I endorsing them?

Same applies to Celtic. Indeed using the above definition it would seem their silence was the absence of an endorsement.

I think Celtic had no option but to go along with the 5 way agreement. What was there in it to object to that directly affected Celtic?

RFC’S successor was condemned to the bottom tier to start again.

    What was disagreeable about that?

What I think the game should have done is come out with a statement stating why it was thought necessary to allow TRFC to be allowed to have a place at all as a new club and explain the economical and social reasons for doing so. But that was for the the signatories to the 5 way to do. RFC. Sevco.SFL SPL and SFA. As a member of both the latter Celtic were in no position to dictate.

    Canalamar

Even if Celtic had questioned the 5 way in public it would not have stopped it, so I question the wisdom of exposing the Club to what would have been charges of complete selfishness.

I don’t know what the other clubs said but I do know that as far back as 2010 Celtic had serious worries about the ability of a number of clubs to survive, so I’d be amazed if that was not a business consideration for Celtic never mind the other clubs.

  16. Canamalar

He’d certainly have learned to eat more!

Your logic though could be applied to any player.

  17. Any info on new keeper ?

He play for one of the better teams in Belgium ..

  18. Have asked before.

Can anyone, in fairly simple language, explain the Five Way Agreement?

  19. Awe Naw

To answer your first point I think we’ll sell any player when they’re at their optimum sale value.

I posted toward the end of the season that there had been improvements in player and team performances over the course of last season but that I still have reservations about Ronny’s ability adapt his tactics and formations when required.

I dont see it. Improvement from last summer of course. As a team we work very hard but at a price. I also think long term over the season our futness dipped.

That appears to mean that Scottish Football is happy to have members who walk away from debts just so long as the are not football related.
