Bolstering the attack quickish

769

With 26 career goals, 25 of which came in a Dundee United shirt, £1.5m sounds a tad generous for Nadir Ciftci.  Celtic’s earlier offer of £900k sounds more like the mark but Wigan have validated United’s target price with a deal with meets their requirements, if not that of the player’s.

Is he a player to improve Celtic?  Quite possibly, he’ll bring something we don’t have at the moment – a sticky out ball – but it’s a big ask to expect him to step up to Champions League levels.  Signing that level of player might take Champions League money, but we’ll need to get there first, which is why we need to bolster the attack quickish.

Two years ago we talked about the number of senior games a good player is able to make before he’s noticed by those to rich and lazy to do as much low-level research Celtic must do to unearth a gem.

Victor Wanyama made 51 appearances before becoming a Celtic player, Virgil van Dijk made 62.  It’s likely both spent the bulk of those games without anyone paying much attention to them, Celtic’s scouts are likely to have been alerted when they have little more than a dozen or so games left at their previous clubs.

Ciftci’s made 67 senior appearances.  If he has what it takes, the world will know about it sooner rather than later.

Watching Celtic TV the other night and Jim Craig was going on about how in the late 60s he used to give Peeeenesss a lift to Celtic Park most mornings.

    Did he start with us?

He was a schoolboy at Celtic, went to Spurs as a youth player, fell out with them because he thought he should be in the first team – modest as ever – and went to Boro’ where he played alongside the great Bobby Murdoch and learned the art of midfield play before joining Liverpool, although Bob did not teach him the thuggery which was part of his nature.

Mr McNamara has said that Ciftci won’t be leaving for Celtic or anywhere else in this transfer window unless United’s demands are met.

I thought they accepted a Million for him from the giants at wigan?

So we have more than “Met demands”…………………………………no?

The cynic in me would say that getting games improved LG. He wasn’t in the picture until Guidetti was out of it.

I expect LG to be punted this window.

Summa, re the picture of Jinky and the beast walking together after a game, I can tell you that it was after a fundraiser (new pavilion I think) between a Gourock YAC select and a celebrity team at Gourock park in 1987. Tenements behind are George Road. I was there! Remember Tam Gemmell played too. Great event.

7 kilos down in 6 weeks mate and back playing football again and running, and all in the heat too. Not that it is anything on the heat here in Briz, but it is hot. Beach and winter BBQ tomorrow but believe me when I say I miss the UK BBQ’s more, I don’t know, but for me, cold and good hot food – it’s the best.

Life is only a bitch if you look on the darker side.

  11. Awe Naw, We have just 3 “strikers”, Leigh, Anto & Scepo, from that little pool, Leigh is the best. We need at least 4 striking options, what with injuries, tactical substitutions, loss of form etc. I would be shocked to my boots if Leigh was punted.

If Ciftci is the only striker coming in, we would need to hang on to all three we have, if we get 2 in then yes one of existing 3 will go, but I would expect Anto would be the more likely.

  12. I trained with Teams ,that is not the same as being a signed player and playing for them officially.

Graeme Souness never did that at Celtic.

I know he started out at Celtic, I also know that I do have proof somewhere, but for me to find it is going to take time out of my holiday with my kids and you are not getting that for free.

Before I get into the part where we offer each other a charity bet, I think if you ask Jim Craig about Souness, Jim Craig will tell you he was at our club.

Failing that we’ll have ourselves a wee charity bet. There will be no losers.

On changing leagues I get the impression leaving the spl isn’t supported by a large percentage of our fans. Would also like to know if the board would decide or would shareholders have to vote on it,,or would the fans be polled. Some give and take would be required. Away fans seem to enjoy their jaunts within Scotland,,don’t think they would be happy. Hail Hail

I can’t see Ronny Deila selling Griffiths. Currently he’s the only out and out striker worth playing (RD obviously doesn’t see Stokesy as a striker). Griffiths is a grafter which is probably at the top of Ronny’s ‘greatest attributes in a footballer’ list.

No, I fully expect LG to remain and one other striker to be brought in. Disappointingly for me, I expect it to be Ciftci.
