Bolstering the attack quickish

769

With 26 career goals, 25 of which came in a Dundee United shirt, £1.5m sounds a tad generous for Nadir Ciftci.  Celtic’s earlier offer of £900k sounds more like the mark but Wigan have validated United’s target price with a deal with meets their requirements, if not that of the player’s.

Is he a player to improve Celtic?  Quite possibly, he’ll bring something we don’t have at the moment – a sticky out ball – but it’s a big ask to expect him to step up to Champions League levels.  Signing that level of player might take Champions League money, but we’ll need to get there first, which is why we need to bolster the attack quickish.

Two years ago we talked about the number of senior games a good player is able to make before he’s noticed by those to rich and lazy to do as much low-level research Celtic must do to unearth a gem.

Victor Wanyama made 51 appearances before becoming a Celtic player, Virgil van Dijk made 62.  It’s likely both spent the bulk of those games without anyone paying much attention to them, Celtic’s scouts are likely to have been alerted when they have little more than a dozen or so games left at their previous clubs.

Ciftci’s made 67 senior appearances.  If he has what it takes, the world will know about it sooner rather than later.

I’m not making any associations. You are.

I’ll need to see how you are reading that into my words.

Im working on the basis that not all that is known now was known then and based on that, I think the 5 Way was unavoidable.

That does not mean I agree with it or endorse it. It just means I can see how it came about.

  2. Aw Naw

Only if we depend on Celtic.

We’re not that daft and we will get no stick.

    Believe me.

  4. Auldheid,

    Let me help you

“If it was the 5 way or tipping Scottish football over the edge what else could Celtic have done?”

It’s not like I’m taking it out of context or anything it was a stand alone sentence.

They could have led on the integrity ticket and made sure their supporters understood they did not support corruption, had Scottish football went over the edge what do you think the result for Celtic would have been ? Could you see no opportunities for Celtic ? Really ?

  5. Auldheid

They were definitely stupid…. Ended in liquidation

So integrity truth and the feelings of the fans is secondary to finance!!

Sad state of affairs eally., not enough brave men I suggest, I would have traded Scottish football starting afresh without them, a total refurb from top to bottom but I suppose that’s me being bitter and gready…ho hum…. Onwards and upwards..I hope :)

That we cant depend on Celtic says it all.

Sadly that can be taken as read under the present custodians.

We are on a downward spiral because of it. Celtic and Scottish football. That will not change until those STILL in FU$$ING job remain.

Anybody watched a film called Veronica guerin, my ghirl and her boyfriend said it’s worth a watch.

Veronica guerin. Not a bad movie. Based on true events. She was a reporter who ruffled a few feathers .was shot by a gang of drug dealers. Led to police being given extra power to seize criminal assets.

Film is a bit maudlin. Would have believe that the drug dealing gangs in Dublin were smashed forever. Nonsense of course but worth a watch.

That really is a shocking thing to say. That you can understand how wrong became right and to hell wi those who have done no wrong. Because it’s for their own good.

From my understanding of your background, you once represented people against management. And I applaud you for that.

But I wouldn’t have done so were you my union boss if that is your concept of negotiation. We don’t start from might is right. We start from right is right, simple as that.

And if wrong has been done, you pay accordingly.

It wasn’t just the fact that they tolerated corruption. It was the highly publicised solutuon of paying JUST football debt and all our clubs accepting it. These guys are happy to take on the custodian mantle when it suits them yet discard it if a buck is to be made and a buck at the expense of those outside football. Rules and regulations being tweaked at their whim. Self serving plurocrats that have to go.

I fondly remember our battles of pedantry.

  14. Auldheid,

Much respect to you for what you do in support of all things Celtic.

Not sure what you are hoping to achieve by engaging the negative crew of CQN. They haven’t changed their tune in all the years they have been on CQN. I doubt they will now.

I’ve not been on as much either but haven’t seen anything so far. I will try to ensure it’s when you’re away though :-)

  18. The Veronica Guerin movie is a good watch, true the mushy ending wants us to believe problem solved.. In the dirty drugs business, like many others, when one big boss is moved on, a squabble ensues and the next king of the dung heap is installed. Power vacum…always a bad time.

    WHAT IS THE STARS

    Respectfully disagree.

I don’t think it is wrong to take wrongdoers to task. The 5-way agreement clearly failed on that and allowed wrongdoing another chance. It was only permitted because of who they were, not because they had a valid reason to be so allowed.

Rangers deserved a lot worse than they got, people buckled under the strength of opinion. Well, that’s not my idea of right and wrong, nor of punishment.

  20. awe_naw_no_annoni_oan_anaw_noo

If RD fails to navigate a path to the Champions League there will be a lot less assets to manage.

I, and I suspect you and many, many others, would like to see a more progressive outlook from the board.

  21. What is the Stars on

    Bobby murdoch

You might be right about what rangers deserved but auldheid as I understand it is making the point that things are known know that were not known at the point and that therefore the decision was understandable.

  22. Whereon

Apologies for being negative, I’m just trying to understand, the situation we as fans found ourselves in through no fault of our own.

And hopefully nothing in my post disrespected Auldheid

The path to the CL is not very clear or straight in my opinion. Lot of football to be played over the next 6 weeks, not sure we are ready yet and will need every day of prep if we make it to the final qualifying round.
