Bolstering the attack quickish

769

With 26 career goals, 25 of which came in a Dundee United shirt, £1.5m sounds a tad generous for Nadir Ciftci.  Celtic’s earlier offer of £900k sounds more like the mark but Wigan have validated United’s target price with a deal with meets their requirements, if not that of the player’s.

Is he a player to improve Celtic?  Quite possibly, he’ll bring something we don’t have at the moment – a sticky out ball – but it’s a big ask to expect him to step up to Champions League levels.  Signing that level of player might take Champions League money, but we’ll need to get there first, which is why we need to bolster the attack quickish.

Two years ago we talked about the number of senior games a good player is able to make before he’s noticed by those to rich and lazy to do as much low-level research Celtic must do to unearth a gem.

Victor Wanyama made 51 appearances before becoming a Celtic player, Virgil van Dijk made 62.  It’s likely both spent the bulk of those games without anyone paying much attention to them, Celtic’s scouts are likely to have been alerted when they have little more than a dozen or so games left at their previous clubs.

Ciftci’s made 67 senior appearances.  If he has what it takes, the world will know about it sooner rather than later.

As far as the back 4 goes , CM should be nowhere near the starting 11

Increasingly, I share your trepidation about the set up … particularly in Europe, it leaves us exposed at the back, and means we need to score a fair few goals.

I must say I was rather excited by RD when he signed, and the promise of fast, attacking football.

And I will admit that I was quite critical of both NFL and GS for the side to side football their teams played.

But, except for a few weeks after we signed SA and GMS (when I thought the football was noticably quicker and more entertaining), we still seem to be having trouble in the final third.

Under RD, I think we have improved noticably at bringiing the ball out of our half more qui9ckly, but we still seem to stall/slow down too much once we cross the half way line. When the pace of the game increases, too many of our players are still struggling to see and make the key defence splitting passes quickly enough.

I know RD wants a basic core of young scottish players, but I am starting to question whether his style of game is possible in Scotland, where, frankly, the players are far behind most of their european counterparts in ball skills. If he had a group of young catalan players, he might have more success with a faster paced passing game.

I know it is early in RD’s second preseason, so last season was probably a bit too soon to see a real turn around in our style realistically. And we are only early in the preseason, so I am hoping that during this season, we will really see the tempo of our game pick up as players get into the season.

I am increasingly unsure that our players are suited for the 4-2-3-1 style that RD plays …. it puts a lot of pressure on the 2 (SB and NB), and too often we have gotten overrun in the middle when playing in Europe (even with 3 in the middle), and we are going to need more production from the 3 if this is to work ….. SJ seems very good at getting into good goal scoring positions, but his finishing has been very poor ….

up front, LG isn’t a target man style player that the 3 can run off of … Ciftci seems like he could do that job, but RD doesn’t seem to like having 2 men up front, and LG has been our only consistent goal scorer, so we cant afford to lose him….

Do we need to go back to a 4-4-2 with LG and Ciftci up front – at least for a while?

mike in Toronto. Ronny has his system of play and I would think he will stand or fall by it. I said earlier I think this is a big season for Celtic and Ronny the CL will show if we have improved or not.We should win the SPL comfortably so that is not the measure we will be judged on progress in Europe is a must.Ronny in my opinion will be well aware of this and the next few weeks will tell us much. H.H.

Since I never said any of that I have no need to defend what you think I meant in what I said.

It was pretty clear. I can understand how the 5 way agreement came about. It does not mean I approve, endorse, support or think it was right.

I have concerns re RD….he seems a stickler for a system even when the players don’t seem to fit it ..or it just isn’t working

We seem too open against decent teams …but will thump poor teams readily …with better suited , better quality players we may thump good teams just as readily ….for the moment , with the current squad I have my reservations re CL qualification

  15. Mike…,

PFayr. For me our qualification for the CL will be down to the luck of the draw if we get weaker sides we might just make it but if we draw a decent team well it is anyones guess.I am not convinced that we have improved all that much from this time last season. H.H.

I had a look at the 5 Way Agreement copy I have and it looks like it made Sevco responsible for some of the skulduggery of RFC under Crag Whyte but its a bit of a brain nipper the ways it is articulated.

That sentence you quoted was a synopsis. By definition, brief.

You can reference as many articles as you like and not get nearer the truth than that.

  21. Auldheid,

Got to say, what you have said tonight has surprised me too, hence my focus on the quotes I provided, BMCUW is not the only one who has had cause to be shocked by some of the things you’ve said.

I did also identify that you may have been misinterpreted or clumsy in your terminology but you are/were being a bit too pragmatic in making excuses for why the board found it reasonable to accept the 5way agreement and you did IMO excuse why they accepted the 5 way agreement, which was a corrupt agreement that destroyed the integrity of the game in Scotland.

Sorry pal but that how I read it.

  22. MiT/JFH/pfayr

I don’t think Ronny cares whether the players are Scottish, Norwegian, Peruvian or Sevconian, what matters is their fitness, willingness to follow his strategy and of course their ability.

He signed GMS and Armstrong both of whom were well known for their energy in a decent Utd side. Denayer had bags of energy and Boyata looks to be in the same mould.

I like the theory but Ronny also needs to be realistic. We won’t be spending fortunes so he has to gauge whether he has or can purchase the players who’ll fit his strategy. If not he has two choices; walk away or adapt the system.

I hope that with a combination he’ll be a huge success given time.

Personally I am delighted Saturday’s defeat came when it did.

Great time to shake the players out of wherever they were mentally and you bet your arse the players are giving a minimum 10% extra in training this week.

The alternative was the players played against poor opposition and carried the false sense of impression of where they were at – until it came the crunch time.

The exact same as what happened after we went a goal up in Prague this time last year.

Gents … not saying anyone is too stoopid! :)

just that the game has passed britain by, in terms of basic skills and results …. the english teams still do OK (not great ) in Europe by spending a fortune on foreign players and coaches ….

marspapa …. I liked the 3-5-2 as well … but we did get found out a few times when using it …. so we have to be able to adjust as necessary (from game to game, or even within a game)… and as PF says, RD seems very reluctant to deviate from his favoured system.

bcw …. not panicking for the last 30 years has gotten british football into the state it is (where, for example, Ireland is now, I believe, behind Gabon and Burkina Faso in the rankings…. and I know Ireland is not part of Britain, but you get my point) …. those running our game have (goat) fiddled while Hampden burned ….

I agree that the time to panic is not now …. it was 20 years ago….

I have no idea how much Pedro will sanction, very little I would think, so he will have to punt few, and bring in what he thinks will make up the jigsaw.

I think he is on a hiding to nothing, but I trust him to do the best he can for us, with the limited resources he will be given.
