Bolstering the attack quickish

769

With 26 career goals, 25 of which came in a Dundee United shirt, £1.5m sounds a tad generous for Nadir Ciftci.  Celtic’s earlier offer of £900k sounds more like the mark but Wigan have validated United’s target price with a deal with meets their requirements, if not that of the player’s.

Is he a player to improve Celtic?  Quite possibly, he’ll bring something we don’t have at the moment – a sticky out ball – but it’s a big ask to expect him to step up to Champions League levels.  Signing that level of player might take Champions League money, but we’ll need to get there first, which is why we need to bolster the attack quickish.

Two years ago we talked about the number of senior games a good player is able to make before he’s noticed by those to rich and lazy to do as much low-level research Celtic must do to unearth a gem.

Victor Wanyama made 51 appearances before becoming a Celtic player, Virgil van Dijk made 62.  It’s likely both spent the bulk of those games without anyone paying much attention to them, Celtic’s scouts are likely to have been alerted when they have little more than a dozen or so games left at their previous clubs.

Ciftci’s made 67 senior appearances.  If he has what it takes, the world will know about it sooner rather than later.

There is a story behind Smith’s resignation in which CQN the CST, CSA and NI Association and Celtic to a lesser degree played it’s part.

If I were writing a book called “SFA The Shenanagins Football Association” the story would be the first chapter which started funnily enough in St Mary ‘s Calton in 2010 .

If you remind me I’ll maybe set it out.

The end line from a conversation I had with Joe O Rourke of he CSA when Smith resigned was “looks like we got dressed up fur nuthin”. I suspect it was the Celtic supporters Smith was referring to in that article.

  10. Delighted Ciftci is signing. The type of forward we see too little of now.An “Up and at em”type, that defenders hate.Shame he is not some unknown, like the last bunch of useless strikers we have signed, because they seemed to get most on here excited by their signing.

When they hear your a Celtic fan in the st Pauli area you’ll be treated very well.

  13. Not quite sure how I feel about Ciftci signing, never stood for me anytime I’ve seen him howver what I am worried about is Pierre Van Hooijdonk having an influence on one of our players….The way he conducted himself in his last few months at Celtic was disgraceful and seemed to be a theme which he carried through his career….all for a few extra quid! I hope history dosen’t repeat itself in a couple of years with his client..

Without trying to put any negative on the Cifcti signing, how many games will he potentially be banned for the alleged biting incident ?

Whatever it would have been, it has now been doubled, so we may not see much of him in the league this side of Christmas, which in turn begs the question, why sign now ?

After his potential ban we could have done a deal in January at end of his potential ban

Could be wrong mind you, may be Not Proven :-)))

  16. Does the Ciftci signing mean that big Scepovic isn’t gonna get another chance?

  17. Auldheid:

I’d love to read the gist of it in an e-mail if you can find the time.

Regards the on-going quest for a level playing field for all, we share the same dream but as you know we are built differently. You have your way (embracing the ‘infinite patience brings… which I just don’t subscribe to simply because good men and women have gone without seeing their dreams made manifest) and I have mine. You have the experience of the office politics that I don’t nor desire to have. You have guile where I seek confrontation, you are compassionate where I think only appropriate retribution true justice. We are both on the same road only your burden is so much heavier than mine and though at times we do not always see eye to eye in pursuit of equality we both share the same passions and desires to see Scotland free of bias and sectarianism. Then as a country, and a people, we can all move forward and seek the bigger dream. I know it is one step at a time but it would be ever so less frustrating if we could make each step a giant step as opposed a baby step.

You have my support in your endeavours, but see us please for what we are, not what you’d like us to be. With people like you around that day will come… if only I could buy some patience….

  18. Well, it looks like Ciftci is signing then. I wonder if we should be aiming higher and trying to sign the Dundee Utd scouts?

You’ll be impressed mate. I was there two years ago and it’s a typically modern German city but with the traditional olde world feel. Pubs and eateries galore in the main market areas down near the river. I watched a repeated Rick Stein programme last week where he sampled the food and beers of Dusseldorf. The big bierkeller he was in is a must. Got their own brewery downstairs and the beers are excellent, as is the rustic grub.

Prices same but better value. And btw I tasted the best chocolate milkshake ever (my weakness).

On route from the train station to market area you’ll think your in Japan. I didn’t realise thousands of Japanese settled there after WW2, so big Jap quarter.

    Classy city.

  24. Scottish FA grant first ever Platinum Award to Celtic

    Wednesday, 10 June 2015

The Scottish FA has awarded its first-ever National Club Licensing Platinum Award to Celtic after continuous improvement was shown at various areas of the club.

To receive the honour clubs must meet a series of standards and procedures as set out by the Scottish FA Club Licensing system. These guidelines are encompassed by a National and UEFA regulatory system with specific references to Stadium Facilities, First Team Football, Youth Football and Legal, administration and finance practices.

Clubs are graded from entry level, Bronze, Silver and Gold and only in exceptional cases is the Platinum Award granted.

Scottish FA Chief Executive Stewart Regan said: “The Scottish FA are extremely pleased to be handing out our first-ever Platinum Award to Celtic. As a club they have shown a real commitment to youth football and are continually striving for the highest level – particularly with regards to their Youth Academy.

“I am confident that more Scottish clubs will be joining Celtic in achieving this exceptional award in the years ahead.”

Celtic Chief Executive Peter Lawwell added: “ Celtic aims at all times to be a world class football Club in everything we do and this award is recognition of the high standards of governance across many areas, which the Club has met for some time.”

  27. Borrowed from the Daily Record:

RANGERS have finally been handed full SFA membership just hours before the football season kicks off – but the club will vigorously contest any move by the SPL to strip them of titles.

RANGERS have finally been handed full SFA membership just hours before the football season kicks off – but the club will vigorously contest any move by the SPL to strip them of titles.

Ibrox chief executive Charles Green reached a compromise agreement with Scottish football chiefs after another day of tense talks in the long-running saga.

And it resulted in the Light Blues being handed the full licence which gives them the go-ahead to kick off life as a Third Division club starting with Sunday’s Ramsdens Cup first round clash with Brechin City at Glebe Park.

Green had to agree to certain conditions – they are willing to accept a 12-month registration embargo and £160,000 fine – before the situation could be resolved which included signing off the transfer of the old company’s share in the top flight to Dundee which formally take place at an SPL meeting on August 3.

One of the major stumbling blocks during talks has been the SPL’s desire for Rangers to accept being stripped of titles if found guilty of their alleged use of dual contracts between 2001 and 2010.

But while Green has agreed to be liable for any sanctions handed out after the SPL’s investiation into the matter the club are insisting they will fiercely contest any punishment which involves title stripping.

That is now set to be a fight for a later day between Gers and the SPL if the Ibrox club are found guilty. The SPL want to hand over the issue to an independent judicial panel on August 10 to rule on whether the club’s former owners breached regulations with alleged undisclosed payments through the controversial EBT tax avoidance scheme.

But in the meantime Gers boss McCoist can now finally prepare for a match in charge after previously arranged pre-season friendlies had to be cancelled due to the club not having its SFA licence in place.

They now go into Sunday’s historic match at Glebe Park with a wafer-thin squad although former Hearts trio Ian Black, Craig Beattie and Kevin Kyle have all been training at Murray Park and could possibly be listed as trialists.

A statement was issued by the SFL which said: “We are pleased to confirm that agreement has been reached on all outstanding points relating to the transfer of the Scottish FA membership between Rangers FC (In Administration), and Sevco Scotland Ltd, who will be the new owners of The Rangers Football Club.

“A conditional membership will be issued to Sevco Scotland Ltd today, allowing Sunday’s Ramsdens Cup tie against Brechin City to go ahead.

“Following the completion of all legal documentation, the Scottish Premier League will conduct the formal transfer of the league share between RFC (IA) and Dundee FC on no later than Friday 3rd August 2012. At this point, the transfer of Scottish FA membership will be complete.

    Key points:

    – The Scottish FA has received all necessary information and documentation from Sevco Scotland Ltd, including details of the company structure, shareholders, financial projections and business plan.

    – Sevco Scotland Ltd has agreed to accept all conditions relating to RFC (IA)’s charges of bringing the game into disrepute, namely the 12-month transfer embargo, beginning at 0.01a.m on 1st September 2012, and payment of all outstanding fines and costs.

    – Sevco Scotland Ltd has agreed to settle all outstanding football debts to other members of the Scottish FA plus clubs under the jurisdiction of other Football Associations.

    – The Scottish Premier League and Scottish Football League have reached agreement on the purchase of a package of broadcasting rights which will allow the former to include The Rangers FC matches in contracts with broadcast partners.

    – The Scottish Premier League has reserved its position in relation to the on-going investigation into EBTs.

Stewart Regan, Chief Executive of the Scottish FA said: “We are pleased for everyone involved in this process, and indeed the whole of Scottish football, that a conclusion has been reached.

“There were a number of complex and challenging issues involved but, primarily, the Scottish FA had to be satisfied that the new owners of Rangers would operate in the best interests of the club, its fans and Scottish football in general.

“We have reached agreement on all terms and conditions attached to the transfer of membership and are able to grant conditional membership, ahead of the formal transfer of the SPL share a week today. This will allow the season to kick-off as planned this weekend and I am sure there will be many who will join me in welcoming the start of the new football season in Scotland.

“This has been a difficult period for Scottish football, but with this agreement now in place, and with the new season upon us, it is essential that we all focus our energies on football once again. In the months ahead, the Scottish FA will resume discussions on the subject of league reconstruction. We remain committed to this process in order to re-energise the national game and will work closely with the SPL, SFL and all other relevant affiliated bodies to provide a dynamic product appealing to our supporters.”

Charles Green, Chief Executive of The Rangers Football Club, said: “The agreement signed today allows Rangers to be granted membership by the SFA and finally enables the Club to move forward.

“The Board, the manager and senior executives have been working tirelessly over the last few weeks to secure the future of the Club and today is the start of that process.

“The Board has had to take some very difficult decisions to gain SFA membership, including accepting the delayed transfer ban and paying outstanding financial penalties. But we are now able to get back to playing football and plan for the new season, starting this Sunday with our match against Brechin.

“There remains, however, an outstanding issue with the SPL regarding EBTs. As we have proved in the last couple of months we will stand up to any challenges that face Rangers and will continue to fight for the Club’s best interests.”

SPL chief executive Neil Doncaster said: “We are pleased to have reached an agreement with the parties concerned. Discussions will now continue with our broadcast partners and we expect to be in a position to make a further announcement next week on broadcasting rights and the on-going EBT investigation.”

Jim Ballantyne, President of the SFL added: “Current events have thrown up some serious challenges to Scottish football and the SFL has played its part in trying to navigate through to a solution in difficult circumstances.

“I am now looking forward to doing what we are actually here to do. To play football.”
