Bolstering the attack quickish

769

With 26 career goals, 25 of which came in a Dundee United shirt, £1.5m sounds a tad generous for Nadir Ciftci.  Celtic’s earlier offer of £900k sounds more like the mark but Wigan have validated United’s target price with a deal with meets their requirements, if not that of the player’s.

Is he a player to improve Celtic?  Quite possibly, he’ll bring something we don’t have at the moment – a sticky out ball – but it’s a big ask to expect him to step up to Champions League levels.  Signing that level of player might take Champions League money, but we’ll need to get there first, which is why we need to bolster the attack quickish.

Two years ago we talked about the number of senior games a good player is able to make before he’s noticed by those to rich and lazy to do as much low-level research Celtic must do to unearth a gem.

Victor Wanyama made 51 appearances before becoming a Celtic player, Virgil van Dijk made 62.  It’s likely both spent the bulk of those games without anyone paying much attention to them, Celtic’s scouts are likely to have been alerted when they have little more than a dozen or so games left at their previous clubs.

Ciftci’s made 67 senior appearances.  If he has what it takes, the world will know about it sooner rather than later.

I get that, but it’s the panic, bordering on hysteria after Saturday, I can’t abide.

Who knows what the game was on Saturday. Prague are a few games ahead and that’s massive at this stage.

One thing the Huns have got right under Warburton is playing behind closed doors.

Any one who was panicking after Saturday needs their head examined. I don’t think I have been to or watched a friendly game involving anyone in ten years. They are just fitness exercises, results mean nothing.

Do we need to go back to a 4-4-2 with LG and Ciftci up front – at least for a while?

    ———

I dont think we need to switch for domestic games , but we do need to switch in Europe by either reverting to a 4411, and / or sitting 10 yards off the opposition, so we press just over the halfway line rather 30 / 40 yards from their goal.

Our current system leaves us exposed with fullbacks pushing ahead of the two central midfielders and, when we lose possession, our defenders end up facing their own goal.

The centre backs then go out to where the full backs should be, and central mid drops in to cover the centre backs.

All of that works ok, when you are up against Adam Rooneys and a past his best McFadden, but it doesnt work in Europe.

Last season we often relied on VVD or Jason’s pace to rescue us, but again, its easy to look fast vs. your average Scottish forward.

We also need a better striker.

Your ideal forward has pace, upper body strength, height , aggression , tactical awareness and can finish.

We are not going to get someone with all five of those attributes, so we are realistically looking at someone with two or three, like Hooper, and despite working on his upper body, Griifith’s is too easily brushed off the ball in Europe, whilst Scepovic seems to lack committment.

I think he has proved he can, you don’y win leagues with no cash, or relativly no cash unless you know what you are doing.

You need time, and eventually you will get there, but we are sort of there already, the next step is the CL every season, but I am totally dismayed at the lack of backing he is getting, this year the funds take an enormous hike, and I see players coming in early doors, but I don’t see the quality needed to ensure getting there for as sure as you can be.

Sometimes a waver from the policy of buy cheap sell dear should be considered, there are quality players out there for free, they are way past a sell on fee, but they will do a job for us, proper players who know the game inside out, players who can be relied on, players who will do a job for a season or two, but we seem not to go after these, cos there is no sell on value, well, teams like whoever you can think of, teams who win things, all have these kinda players in their teams.

To be honest I’ve not seem that on here or anywhere else.

It concerned me that we displayed the same symptoms that we exhibited early last season where we allowed a decent side to exploit massive gaps in wide positions and between our midfield and defence.

I’m not lighting flares, just yet, but it was a bit of a worry :-)

Don’t know what PL is thinking…£1.5 Million for Ciftci.

We could have got Danny Wilson, Kris Boyd, Richard Forster, Keith Lasley, and resurrected Deek Riordan’s career, and a right good rake of pies for the kiosks for that money.

You get what you pay for….in this case….SPL dross.

Should have ditched the nostalgic refurb at CP….and bought a decent player.

We can get humped in the CL….but never mind, the stadium will look good

  11. Clashcity…,

I was looking at your argument and thinking I don’t honestly know enough to know which formations are the best or how anyone could honestly believe they know, managers don’t know or they’re ably all play the same formation but what has always struck me as a waste of time is having four wingers, wing backs and wingers in the same team just does not strike me as a useful option, what’s the point, get everybody out on the wings and aim for THE guy in the middle, the goals are in the middle so get any spare on amongst it and stop fancying about on the wings either a wine gear or a wing back but stop wasting resources trying to master the wings, there I said it and I don’t care how ignorant it makes me look :)

I get were you are coming from about the comparison with last year a bit.

But last season as we now know was down to personalities and the reaction to change more than anything eh ?

Think the comparison is therefore way off?

Who knows about the Striker eh? When we have spent it’s often ended in failure and the amount spent is often immaterial to the success. Just posted about Finnbogasson…

I have some sympathy for TET’s point about getting a ball player in. Someone we could enjoy watching.

    Auldheid,

Got to say, what you have said tonight has surprised me too, hence my focus on the quotes I provided, BMCUW is not the only one who has had cause to be shocked by some of the things you’ve said.

I did also identify that you may have been misinterpreted or clumsy in your terminology but you are/were being a bit too pragmatic in making excuses for why the board found it reasonable to accept the 5way agreement and you did IMO excuse why they accepted the 5 way agreement, which was a corrupt agreement that destroyed the integrity of the game in Scotland.

Sorry pal but that how I read it.

    =========================

For me an excuse is when you can do something about an event to change it but don’t and a reason is when it is beyond your power to change it.

I gave a reason not an excuse.

If you guys think Celtic could have stopped RFC or TRFC from staying in our game, which is what you seem to be against, not the 5 Way itself, I think you way over estimate Celtic’s power and way underestimate what they were up against.

  19. Since dukla friendly it’s been hard reading…

We got beaten by a team 6 games into their pre-season. My main question is why are we having 3 bounce games before our 1st competitive football game on the 15th july, while they have had 6 bounce games so far when their first competitive game is not until the 25th of july???

I would love celtic to go buy a quality striker who will cut it at the top and I would also love a bigger, better house with more rooms and a new car, but I can’t afford it, that’s life my friends. We are however being duped after all I think you will find we do tend to outspend most all clubs that we are drawn against in the c/l play offs, yet it’s not very obvious on the field of play.

Like the banners and the lighting round the stadium at night, does make for a beautiful setting, especially at the entrance along the avenue. We may not always be the best team on the park but we should have, in my opinion, the best club facilities, stadium and envious. 365 days of the year people should be able to access a range of good facilities in the celtic triangle i.e. museum, social clubs, pubs and restaurants, cafes, hotel and superstore.

celtic play min 18 games at home and 18 away, celtic make jack all from the away games honestly celtic park should be buzzing at said times with at least 1500 punters with screening of our games and others games that day incentivised with clubcard discount of food and drink, prize drew for kids, crazy football, soft play, wee football course etc..

so while we are making bang average players millionaires, I would propose money be ring fenced to get facilities in place. Once done I am sure it will have the benefit of giving celtic supporters the best facilities, giving punters more reason to go to celtic park and stick around for a while and at the same time making the club some money. Your see the problem is every other successful business in the world has clocked on to the fact that people want and expect more choice and if you don’t give it to them they simply go somewhere else that will, simple really

Let’s face it, with celtic s financial advantage in Scotland winning the league is expected. Cups are nice bonuses but qualifying for the champions league is the acid test.

It sounds harsh I know but if we don’t get to the champions league this year ronny may be gone.
