Bolstering the attack quickish

769

With 26 career goals, 25 of which came in a Dundee United shirt, £1.5m sounds a tad generous for Nadir Ciftci.  Celtic’s earlier offer of £900k sounds more like the mark but Wigan have validated United’s target price with a deal with meets their requirements, if not that of the player’s.

Is he a player to improve Celtic?  Quite possibly, he’ll bring something we don’t have at the moment – a sticky out ball – but it’s a big ask to expect him to step up to Champions League levels.  Signing that level of player might take Champions League money, but we’ll need to get there first, which is why we need to bolster the attack quickish.

Two years ago we talked about the number of senior games a good player is able to make before he’s noticed by those to rich and lazy to do as much low-level research Celtic must do to unearth a gem.

Victor Wanyama made 51 appearances before becoming a Celtic player, Virgil van Dijk made 62.  It’s likely both spent the bulk of those games without anyone paying much attention to them, Celtic’s scouts are likely to have been alerted when they have little more than a dozen or so games left at their previous clubs.

Ciftci’s made 67 senior appearances.  If he has what it takes, the world will know about it sooner rather than later.

RD will have a lot less assets to manage if we don’t qualify for this season’s Champions League!

John James comment (tinfoil helmets at the ready) on the Wizard’s blog

TPL have spent £8M to date, and loaned King £2.5M to buy his shares.

From this point onward there will be no more loans and no capital expenditure on

players or signing on fees. The business plan is simple but flawed. If King can convince 45,000 to buy season books he can yield £8M after VAT. He hopes all 45,000 turn up to increase match day spend to a figure of £15M, including corporate entertainment. Add broadcasting, sponsorship and cup revenue and you might have a turnover of £28M

Last year, RIFC lost £7.8M on turnover of £25M

To break even this year requires austerity by stealth. You replace 11 players with out of contract rejects and one Bosman. You renege on your £5M debt. You allow a third party to own all the assets. But even with this, you still need to find another £4M in cuts or investment to break even. Since the latter is improbable given the toxicity of King, The Sports Academy at Auchenhowie will. in my opinion, be mothballed

This is why having King as our chairman appals me. At best he is a luxury we cannot afford as he spends 7 figure sums on spin at Level 5. At worst he repels any possible investment which will lead to savage cuts in our operational expenditure.

If you though last season was bad, look away now.

    Yes,mate. I get that.

My point is that might was allowed to overcome right. Everyone who acquiesced to that is,IMO,as guilty as the original wrongdoers.

  14. weeron,

Wtf are you on about, discussions like this is how big growed up people reach a consensus, no one has insulted anyone we are debating a very serious issue, Auldheid might have been misinterpreted and he will let us know but unless we let him know our interpretation he will not know how to frame his argument. In this instance I am worried that he is being too pragmatic and that accepting corruption ” for the financial good of the game” could destroy the game, why would people want to turn up to a freezing pishy night to watch a corrupt game when they can take their kids to a WWF show where ate least they won’t get soaked watching.

A similar discussion created res 12, it’s how negative and positive come together and make something good happen.

  15. wits,

I’m sorry but that was exactly how I read Auldheid, far to pragmatic, to paraphrase ‘ it’s either accept corruption or push the Scottish game over the edge’

IMO had the Scottish game been pushed over the edge two possibilities,

    1. The game is revolutionised and sporting integrity becomes the mantra

    2. A British league is born.

  16. BOBBY MURDOCH'S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS on

  20. Awe_Naw_No_Annoni_Oan_Anaw_Noo on

    Murdochbhoy,

Although it is critical it us not crucial that we qualify for the CL under the present stewardship. As long as we have a player we csn sell to the EPL

VVD this year. I suspect Johannson next year. If you always sell your best players you cannot expect those who have not been sold to aspire to be even better. You are playing for your move not a European medal.

RD was brought in to turn projects into diamonds. Something NL was not prepared to do under the constraints of ever decreasing salaries. I suspect as he felt he was doing that already for Celric, from his career perspective.

RD has to have a higher success rate of diamond polishing than NL or their will be no profits and thetefore no Ronny.

Our PLC I believe have embarked on this course due to it being more lucrative. CL football can only help but it is not a priority. Cancelling pre season tours, will already be costing us, but these cosmetic offerings to RD can’t replace players.

    HH

  21. We were cheated pure and simple.

I was outraged at the time of LNS and still am now.

Scottish Football has allowed the cheats to prosper and have encouraged the same club farce.

Celtic are guilty. Have done hee haw about.

I knew they cheated then and I know they cheated now.

It disgusts me they got away with it.

Surely when HMRC win the case the SFA have to strip their titles ?

    Guys,

With respect, if we can’t beat a team that is currently lying 6th in the Icelandic League having won four of ten league starts this season then we don’t really deserve to go any further, regardless of who plays at the back. I believe that we will need to improve to be able to progress against the better qualifiers.

  29. Ciftci?

I must admit to being a bit underwhelmed. I’d rather see a proven striker like Hooper.

In addition, his temperament is suspect. Has anyone here ever bitten an opponent? I’ve been playing football for nearly 50 years and managed to avoid it. When Suarez bit the Chelsea player and it was then revealed he had done it before at Ajax you just knew he would do it again. And he did. It probably won’t be the last time either.

Seeing Cifti sitting on the ground and biting the nearest opponent on the leg just fills me with dread. That’s El Hadji Diouf territory.

So, not for me i’m afraid. Can you imagine the fuss if he does that in the hoops?

We played Reykjavik a couple of seasons ago and humped them i am fairly certain we will do the same here regardless if i play or any of the current squad, the tricky fixture will always be the playoff.

We have enough ability to beat this team at a canter and we will i have no doubt make at least the play off.

The icelandic league is 40th in the world spfl 24th. There should be no worry at all.

Reykjaviks average salary alone is 30k a season!
