Bolstering the attack quickish

769

With 26 career goals, 25 of which came in a Dundee United shirt, £1.5m sounds a tad generous for Nadir Ciftci.  Celtic’s earlier offer of £900k sounds more like the mark but Wigan have validated United’s target price with a deal with meets their requirements, if not that of the player’s.

Is he a player to improve Celtic?  Quite possibly, he’ll bring something we don’t have at the moment – a sticky out ball – but it’s a big ask to expect him to step up to Champions League levels.  Signing that level of player might take Champions League money, but we’ll need to get there first, which is why we need to bolster the attack quickish.

Two years ago we talked about the number of senior games a good player is able to make before he’s noticed by those to rich and lazy to do as much low-level research Celtic must do to unearth a gem.

Victor Wanyama made 51 appearances before becoming a Celtic player, Virgil van Dijk made 62.  It’s likely both spent the bulk of those games without anyone paying much attention to them, Celtic’s scouts are likely to have been alerted when they have little more than a dozen or so games left at their previous clubs.

Ciftci’s made 67 senior appearances.  If he has what it takes, the world will know about it sooner rather than later.

  1. Auldheid,

“which is what you seem to be against, not the 5 Way itself”

I think that’s a bit disingenuous, every argument has made the 5way the point of contention, the 5way is what every argument demanded the board should have been questioning, how can such an agreements be sanctioned by our board.

Raising an objection against the validity of the 5way was the only way I personally framed the argument as did everyone else who bothered to question the motives for not objecting to it.

I did at least quote your words that led to my confusion on your opinions and tried to faithfully keep them within the context you framed them, can you please give me a couple of examples of how you ended up with your conclusions form my arguments.

The 5way was the corruption and integrity was the victim how did that possibly end up being anything other than about the authorities and collaborators that teamed up to corrupt our game.

The only reason the hun were mentioned was that they were the beneficiary not the process.

Are you really Auldheid or, Auldheid are you bevvied ?

Am I missing something? In Portugal just now for 3 weeks, catch up time. Adam Matthews leaves for Sunderland, to save his Wales career. Sevco sign some guy called Wes, who is going to play for Engurland & in the Champions League. Who rights this p*sh in the SMSM?

  4. BMCUWP’s, I was having a wee scroll back and someone mentioned a preference for 352 as a formation, 433 is a formation that exploits space that leaves.

Canamalar, 6 Lacey wingers would be exciting.

Im VERY much in the yes camp regarding Ciftci and i reckon he is not without any of the 6 attributes you mention.

It would be nice if he had a little more pace and a little less aggression!(feel a song coming on)but IF he did…..well…..he probably wouldnt be here in the 1st place.

I think he will be a fantastic signing IF it happens and will add a completely different dimension to our play.

Can see him being the perfect foil for Johansen.

  6. Stephbhoy,

Sammi can only do it at the top and he’s free but he doesn’t have a sell on value, no consideration that he might again score the goals that earn the club £15M cause he does not fit the profile, for all we know he could be at the top of Ronny’s list but doesn’t fit the boards profile. That’s the sad truth.

  7. TET

In comparison to the rest of the SPFL managers he’s had cash. Any Celtic manager who doesn’t win the league in the current situation should be booted down the Gallowgate. That’s the reality despite how we dress up our game.

You know I’m desperate for him to succeed but I’m still unconvinced that he can do it in Europe under restrictions which he knows are there.

I have a load of things I could criticise Peter Lawell for, most of which I can’t post on here because it could cost people their job, however, I do sympathise to an extent with our budget restrictions.

    ====================

Not what I meant at all. I meant if clubs went to the wall as some might have really feared, then how could Celtic take that risk with their future, which in turn would affect Celtic, by opposing the continuation of RFC in the third tier?

This conversation started off by you saying Celtic should have questioned the 5 way agreement. I took that, perhaps mistakenly, to mean questioned RFC continuing to play a part in Scottish football at a professional level.

My responses was based on the impossibility of Celtic stopping that happening,

    Its a matter of opinion.

Mine is no chance not just because of the opposition but just exactly how they would achieve that aim.

  16. Auldheid,

You know exactly what I’d have done

And you also know I do not think the game would have been weaken by teams who could not survive disappearing.

But and its a big butt :)

The whole thing started by you asking what could Celtic have done to prevent the corruption though you dressed it up in an anti hun agenda, what was it you said

What could Celtic have done to made sure rangers were not given special treatment or assisted their downfall (paraphrased)

I said, publicly object to the 5way agreement.

So while I took the destroy rangers element out of it and made it into a sporting integrity issue, you did not want to argue on that basis and got all pragmatic on us as if accepting corruption was the only reasonable way to go for the board.

I’d like to object to you using the word Celtic when referring to the minority at the club who make all the decisions. You know why.

IMO, that minority have caused the club more harm than every supporter who has refused to renew their season ticket since MON but they never ever get accused of harming the club’ only the people who don’t renew are allowed that accolade.

Personally I think all the corporate areas should be turned into standing areas, the only time you should be sitting at a Celtic game is if you have a physical problem standing.

You know me I’d much, much rather be posting and talking about the team on the park. All of us can agree or disagree about that all day long.

Sadly, there are issues which I personally think need addressed, from our Plc to the polis and the powers which they’ve been given.

I long for the days when we could just argue about who did or didn’t disgrace the Hoops! :-)

    6 July, 2015

The 5 way was but a means to an end. That end was to allow RFC/TRFC to play a part in Scottish Football at a professional level.

The parties to the agreement were RFC/Sevco/SFA/SPL/SFL.

How could Celtic sanction it? They would have a view that the SPL would have considered and accepted or rejected if it came to a vote and if enough of the 10 other clubs did not share that view (the 11th being RFC).

In principle the SPL and SFA should have closed the door on a club that was toxic and may yet eat itself from within, but I can understand why clubs feared to do that for economic reasons (which is not to rule out hunnish reasons as well)

I think they may all have underestimated the damage done to the integrity of our game but then again they may have decided that after an initial fuss it would all blow over and, sheep like, the majority of supporters would not give a feck about sporting integrity.

I had this conversation recently with an ST holder who was interested in Res12/LNS etc and tried to engage with his family members, all ST holders. They at first did not understand the integrity issues raised and even after he had explained they simply dismissed it as not relevant to their continuing support.

Perhaps that is what swayed all clubs to accept what some of us find unacceptable.

Understanding why something is so is not accepting that it has to be so, if I thought that I’d not be fighting our fight.

  19. ht,

I’m no sure Ronny knew what a Celtic player was until a wee while after he got here, I think he persisted with some of his mistakes hoping he could redeem them.

Not knowing or understanding what that meant was 100% down to the lack if induction into the club! his remit must still be a source of confusion! he must surely be asking himself, how do I satisfy the support with what is available, and it’s an impossible task, his ambition is limited by the reality of the administrative support. I’ve no doubt he is feeling the gulf more now than he did when he started and worse when he finished last season. Breath :)

  20. Celtic need CL football. The fans need it. Okay we can survive without it, but who wants to live their life watching a surviving Celtic team? Not me.

It was bad enough watching the cheats win everything through the 90s.

RD must know his remit includes group stage CL football.

That means he is under enormous pressure now to deliver.

  21. mullet and co 2 on

Some folk are getting their excuses in early I see.

Griffiths isn’t capable as an effective 1 up front in a 4 2 3 1. Ronny didn’t rate him but played him as it was a better solution than playing Guidetti who couldn’t score and didn’t want to be there.

If you want to beat teams in Europe and progress you need to move the ball quickly and you need players who can can receive it and move it at that pace. We had Neil Lennon sticking to passing the ball back and forth between midfield and defence before a wing back and midfielder took it down a channel. Ronny wants the ball forward and the first player receiving it in the midfield to turn and pass forward. No more tippy tippy percentage play.

If you want to return to 4 4 2 then return to stagnation and no progress. It’s not the individual players that make a team, it’s the manager. If Ronny learns from his mistakes of last season – Charlie Mulgrew can’t play in the midfield in Europe, no crazy subs at zero zero etc we are in with a shout.

I wouldn’t call a team with a maximum of 5 Scots in the starting line up a team with a handicap. The resurgence of a football playing scottish national side in a modified 4 231 would tell you better than anything else that aye Scots can play it.

People in Scotland wrongly assume there is a genetic defect that doesn’t allow us to play football as well as some of the Latin sides or even now some Nordic or Slavic teams. It’s as though we are born with curly toes and stiff hips. Physical genetics are one thing but I would contest that if folk keep pinning we can’t play this style or that style with Scots, Dutch, Hondurans and maybe Turks then it’s the mentality of the fans that holds us back.

Maybe the soil in Scotland means we can only play a 4 4 2? It’s a drainage thing?

2 up front makes you more likely to concede the ball in midfield to most other teams who have 5 in a midfield area. Geometry, space and chance… You are more likely yo find a teammate if there are more of them in the important areas.

  24. Auldhed,

You keep gong back to the board sanctioning it, why. Or the clubs having some sort of vote on it, again, why ?

I’m no sure why you find my argument so hard to understand.

I never asked our board to consider what is best for a corrupted Scottish football, I did expect our board to be consistent in their previously public demands for sporting integrity.

As soon as our board heard about the 5way they should have declared to the support and the shareholders that they did not support the corruption of out game through illegal secret deals, That is all I asked, nothing more.

You are making excused as to why they did not do that.

You know fine well I don’t give a funkeys muck about what the football authorities or supporters of this corruption would think about such a deceleration, this IMO is a very local issue between the board and those who administer our club and everyone who supports/shareholders of the club had a right to know about the decisions being made without their consent. Especially when those decisions involve corruption.

Pragmatism is not something that should be used to incriminate or reduce the culpability of those responsible for criminal acts and that is exactly what happened here. Money men commonly use this strategy to spread the blame and confuse culpability and that has IMO brought shame on our club.
