Brendan juxtaposition, but for the grace of God

432

You will have noticed minds elsewhere have recently turned to the most difficult question in Scottish football, how will Celtic’s inextricable domination of Scottish football be stopped? If you have been reading CQN for as long as I’ve been writing it, you’ll know the information you should consult on this question is the financial fundamentals.

Celtic’s domination was assured since well before it was predicted here (in 2004). Our only opponent worthy of the name was indulging in an orgy of irresponsibility. While the eventual outcome was more delightful than any of us dared hope, the consequences for the Scottish title were always going to end up the same way.

Celtic just needed to stave off the desire to join the lemmings, keep to a responsible budget, and their long-term outcome was assured.

But this is not the issue most commentators ponder when considering how Celtic will be clawed back into the pack, all they can see is a manager with the apparent Midas touch. While Brendan is here, the story goes, it’s not even worthwhile discussing Celtic’s domination.

I agree with this point, although I could add that Ronny won two leagues more than comfortably, Neil won three, and when Brendan eventually reties due to old age, we’ll be very capable of recruiting an effective talent.

There’s been a fascinating juxtaposition this week on the subject of Brendan as he secured his first title as Celtic manager. 11 months ago, when Ronny announced he was leaving, Peter Lawwell drew up his targets. Two names were at the top of the list, Brendan, and now-Sunderland manager, Davie Moyes. Both were interviewed and both knew each other was under consideration. I’m pretty sure Celtic were prepared to sign up the first one who would commit.

11 months on and, from 100 miles away, life seems to be disentangling for Davie Moyes. The jocular threat to slap a female reporter is systematic of a man who is losing control. After a promising honeymoon period at Sunderland, his team is destined for relegation, most probably as bottom of the division.

There is a haunting realisation in the North East that, like a struggling swimmer who has bobbed below the waterline a few times, the next time they are under could be a great deal more consequential.  Moyes’ reputation has taken more than a slap.

I remember Davie as a player (splay-footed and unconvincing), and wanted his as Celtic manager when Gordon Strachan resigned. His decade at Everton provides ample evidence of his genuine talent. These are the things my mind turns to when his name is mentioned.

When Brendan hears Davie’s name, what chance he thinks, “There but for the grace of God………”

We’ve got a great manager, but he knows he’s got a great job.

  1. I wouldn’t concern myself with “destabilizers”.

The desire and focus of Brendan and his team will increasingly reduce their influence in the media.

Success will prove them to be an irrelevance.

  2. Helllo again, if anyone has access to Twitter there are some brilliant memes and gifs on the go right now. I can’t do the link, but I particularly like the Countdown one. HH

  3. Hope lawell and desmond .now commit the same as brendan , and supply the cash to keep us top dogs . And keep us at the top table in europe

We have strengthened from a position of strength. As a fan base we have always asked for this.

We now have a manager and many key players under reasonably long term contracts so we have a nucleus to build a team on; a team that knows each other and how each other plays.

This is what Jock did; this is what Brendan is doing.

I want the attention this close season to be on developing what we have and not screaming for more new signings.

Let Brendan clear the fringe players and build a tight-knit squad and bring our young players through to supplement as and when they are ready.

Brendan should only be making new signings if he is absolutely convinced that they are better than we have and fit the team

Main Stand section ES2 has increased from £559 to £609 for next season an 8.9% increase.

Looks like Season Ticket prices have been restored to the 2012/13 prices. So there has been no increase in 5 years which is a real terms reduction considering inflation.

  7. So you get a rate opportunity to congratulate the board on good business with re-signing BR up for 4 years. Great bit of business.

And within a couple of hours they tell you it’s going to cost the fans another £50+ a year to pay for that good bit of business. Indian giving beerstewards!

Duck you PLC. You’d have thought a wee payback for following and supporting would have been afforded the support. Na not from these bonus loving sphincter holes.

    Real term reduction! Magic.

Hope we never get anywhere near a top league because you won’t get in for under a grand if we do.

It’s getting close to the point I can no longer afford to pay for 3 books.

Very close and it may well be this next season coming I’m priced out.

The destabilisers will focus more intently on key players now.

I agree, no doubt of that, but Brendan committing to the long term puts out such a powerful message to everyone – fans, players, media – that we are building something here. This is a great day for us.

  10. 609 for the main stand, and still no decent facilities, talking about having a hard neck, the board certainly have that, time fans told them to get the finger out,and the usual ones will come on here and telling me to shut up,well i will continue to get the best for the decent hard working fans,to be better served, and Lawell remember it’s the ordinary fans that pump the money into Celtic, the ones with the money ,get the freebies,

Is that no the same Mr Lawwell that has presided over 10Ttitles, 5 SC, this includes 3 doubles, and 4 SLC trophies. Aye eff him and his heated driveway.

  12. Delighted to have secured Brendan for 4 more years.

He can retire in time for me getting my pension.

Get fit for Lisboa training going well. Managing to train and stay in the sun longer than a BRTH Story.

Absolutely. We have taken the position that we will strengthen from a position of real strength. Has any Celtic Board in our history shown such foresight? This is momentous day for us, we are showing an intent and ruthlessness to be the dominant force, something unseen before.

Why wouldn’t Brendan be happy with life at present?…..living in a beautiful country, at an almighty club, managing the team he grew up supporting, handsome financial rewards, already heading towards legendary status (10 iar + European resurgence)…with probably more power and influence than he would have at any other club…long term job security…and of course the one thing he surely finds irresistible….the love of the cqn community……….btw, Brendan is not splay-footed by any chance, is he?

  15. ST up,to £609, youngest son £165, both Main Stand, eledest £498, standing section (although I think I get £198 back once he proves he’s a student)

£1,074, £56.72 per league game for the three of us. Good value based on this season’s entertainment.

  16. Season tickets have gone up less than my council tax………….

£50 reduction in 2012-2103 followed by a price freeze thereafter.

Still good value, I appreciate many will have to think hard about renewing because of the costs involved.

Its our passion to follow the team Mrs RobinBhoy and myself so we will miss a night out or whatever as required to pay the extra.

Already done so staying in tonight!

    http://etims.net/?p=11064 – a must read on Regan.

Having read the original JJ article plus the above Etims article, Regan is not just misleading the public, but also Celtic FC plus its shareholders.

This level of dishonesty is a totally unacceptable insult to the club, its shareholders and its supporters, a point that should not be forgotten when, courtesy of the Supreme Court, the excrement impacts the whirly air circulator.

We all need to be vocal and articulate in ensuring that all those parties guilty of participating in malfeasance with regard to Club Licensing procedures, including FFP and Club regulation, are brought to account.

Whilst we continue to celebrate our successes both on and off the pitch, let us not forget the years of corruption that we have endured to arrive at this point.

They cannot go unheeded and unpunished.

*must be true as I read that on CQN. Is this the trumpet’s Falkland’s, and is he just keeping the seat warm for his successor Hari Kushner or will Iwanka become the first female POTUS.
