Brown called Green right with only one solution remaining

1082

Scottish football has gone through months of drama and uncertainty to rescue ‘Rangers’.  Only weeks ago we were told a CVA was likely.  Once this failed the question of today’s SPL vote crystallised.

The SPL met several times to discuss this matter, even doing so before Rangers CVA failed.  Sentiment was firmly behind Newco, to the extent that some were worried they would be allowed into the league without any sanction (if one Ayrshire club had their way).  All this changed when Charles Green and Duff and Phelps agreed to challenge the SFA at the Court of Session.  At the SPL meeting following this decision the mood changed dramatically.

I then had several friends in the media rubbish my suggestion that Newco were far from certain of being voted into the SPL.  To be fair to them, my information was not coming from Neil Doncaster, whereas theirs was.  If Doncaster was so assured when speaking to the media, day after day, we can only imagine what he was saying to Green. His influence has not been helpful to the cause he championed.

Clubs, who were previously weighing up the argument, suddenly had a convincing point to consider.  Rangers going to court was the biggest own goal in their 140 year history.  Terry Butcher, eat your heart out.

After this Green was at the mercy of fortune, and the growing influence of the hawk(s) in the SPL who saw no need to create space for Newco.  In many respects, John Brown is correct.  Having gambled and failed, Green did whatever he could to accommodate but there was no way back.  Underestimate John Brown at your peril, he has his club’s interests at heart and has the fortitude to raise a phoenix from the ruins of Ibrox.  His unconventional style is easy to mock but it is just what needed (I truly believe this).

Where now for the Newco-Sevco-Rangers?  I don’t see a solution.  Sooner or later Mr Green will let his friends know they only way forward is for him to acquire an existing Scottish Football League club, rename it to something like Rangers United, and move it to Ibrox.

The toxic history would be set free and it would be game-on.  Keep your eye on Cowdenbeath.

  3. Perhaps I misheard the radio reports on the way to work this am attributed to Mr Regan, is he actually suggesting that if a certain groups favoured team are not admitted to Div1 there will be civil unrest?

If that is indeed the case then I would reasonably expect the representatives of this group and indeed the club to issue an urgent statement rebutting Mr Regans concerns, perhaps Mr Regan given his new found media voice could clarify:

    1. If indeed Mr Regan is so concerned about the possible future behaviours of this group, why is he so keen to have them as part of his footballing family?

    2. If he has concerns then has he discussed them with Strathclyde Police and appraised them given they are the body that would deal with matters of actual or planned civil unrest,

    3. As a footballing executive wouldnt Mr Regans time be better spent concentrating on the critical state of Scottish Football rather than scaremongering using a hypothetical situation?

    4. Why do we have rules Mr Regan?

If they were intelligent enough to digest it, even the zombie Huns should feel insulted by Regans statement – but I bet Bomber and the boayz will just see it as recognition.

We should ask Tomo to interview Bomber – I would pay good money to listen to that. He could ask him the old “have you stopped beating your wife yet” question.

  8. Per Stewart Regan;

“The only solution for the game now is that Rangers come into the Scottish Football League and they come into it in the First Division.

“If Rangers were to go anywhere other than the First Division, then there would something in the region of £15.7million worth of losses to the game.

“For the bigger clubs at the top of the league, that’s half their annual distributions. For clubs at the bottom it is basically wiping out their entire distributions, for some of the smaller clubs it’s a huge proportion of their annual turnover.

“Even if Rangers end up in the First Division, there is still going to be a £5million loss of income to the SPL clubs.

“The game is not sustainable so there would be a slow lingering death for the game in Scotland.

“It would then trickle down to the SFL. From our perspective as the governing body, we cannot allow that to happen.”

“We have had dialogue with the broadcasters and we understand what the various stakeholders from Sky television, ESPN, Sport Five and a number of the SPL’s other commercial partners are likely to do in the event Rangers are not in either of the top two tiers,” he said. “It’s not pretty.

“That’s why we cannot sit back and let that happen without trying to get all parties to accept this is the only solution which can keep the game afloat.

“Without Old Firm (sic) games, the value drops, the overseas deals are almost exclusively about the Old Firm (sic) derby and that would go immediately. “It is fair to say the broadcasters would live with a year without Rangers in the SPL, because it could be a fantastic story for them, which is why I think First Division rights will be an interest as people will want to see how this club is going to bounce back.”

What an absolute joke! The SFA Chief is attempting to pre-judge the SFL vote. In fact , he is placing undue pressure on the SFL clubs. The SFA should be hammering this member club for the manifest breaches of financial and other other rules applicable to EVERY club. Did the SFA express such support in the past for Motherwell, Gretna, Airdrie, Dundee, Clydebank etc?

The old boys appear determined to have an enjoyable 1 season in SFL1 with the new Teddy Bears before they regain their rightful place…

The phrase “too big to fail” has proved to be a noose around government’s necks in the context of almost unrestricted support for cheating financial institutions. The SFA chief is manifestly acting in a biased and compromised manner and should immediately resign. Sporting Integrity. FULL STOP

  9. tomtheleedstim on

Just been having a bit of a think about the “Huns into SFL1 or death to all” scenario as played by Regan. There is no way they will get out of the SFL1 in the first season with those players left so Regan’s Armageddon would come to pass anyway. Unless of course they intend to lift the ban on signings. Surely not?

  11. What Mr Regan is in fact saying is, the SFL Clubs have a chance to vote sevco into Div 1 next week, if they dont vote them in then they (as in the SFA) will “show leadership and take charge of the situation” in essence its another threat, either you do it or we will restructure and do it for you,

Mr Regan unless im mistaken it would take the said members agreement to participate in your restructured league(s)….

Err Mr Regan you have allowed it to happen, you were given the info via the new media as to what was going on at that Club and you ignored it,

ignornace is no defence, the inaction makes Regan and Doncaster complicit in the whole shoddy afair.

And on the subject of action and moving swiftly Mr Regan perhaps we can have the appelate panel reconvened and that issue put to bed.

Che, it seems that Mr Regans social anthropological insights were prompted during a beer down at the Louden Tavern with Bomber and his buddies.

  21. Celbridge Celt on

Regan’s outburst is worse than any Sevco supporters, as even the majority of those wish to see the new team in the 3rd division.

His talking down of Scottish Football, a man who is the face of Scottish Football is disgraceful and harmful.

There seems to be no MSM to stop him, Alex Thompson seems to be the only professional journalist to be open to asking these questions and had did a good job broadcasting the truth to the limited viewers of Channel 4 news.

Bascially we need someone to stop Regan damaging the game (during a time it needs to be rebuilt), he must be stopped spreading subterfuge. We don’t need a SPL 2 – we need a period of stability and he’s the one that’s supposed to bring it.

Doncaster has lost credibility – the two interviews prior and post the vote yesterday proved what we already knew.

It looks as if Regan is our biggest threat to Celtic and Scottish Football.

  22. Dubaibhoy-"If I signed off the accounts it has been in good faith." on

“Without Rangers there is social unrest and a big problem for Scottish society,” he said. “They have a huge fanbase and to contemplate the situation where those fans don’t have a team to support, where those fans are effectively left without a game to follow, I just think that could lead to all sorts of issues.

“Tribalism in football is really important. It is part of the game. People follow their clubs with pride, it is passed down from generation to generation. There are thousands of Rangers fans whose fathers and parents and grandfathers have been Rangers fans. You can’t contemplate a situation without that and if Rangers weren’t to exist that could have real dire consequences.”

This whole “social unrest if Rangers don’t exist” is a ludicrous straw man, created by Regan. AllNewRangers CAN exist, no question; all those fathers, grandfathers, brother / sister / husband / wives CAN go and support them – at Bayview, or Benburb or on the Baillieston Blaise.

Observe the rules, let them start again where the rules SAY they should start. hey presto – no unrest (other than in the offices of the Scottish chipwrappers.
