Budget, recruitment, tactics: Brendan adopts

172

We don’t often hear from largest shareholder Dermot Desmond, but he issued a statement after yesterday’s appointment of Brendan Rodgers saying, “In appointing Brendan we believe we have again brought that quality to the club. Brendan is a very talented manager, he has huge experience at the highest levels and is a man who knows how to win and do so in style.

There was no shortage of candidates for the role, but the first line of the quote tell the story of why Brendan was appointed.  “Experience…. highest levels… knows how to win”.  One candidate was not prepared to leave Norway, one could not speak English and several excellent prospects were short of experience at the top level.  Brendan ticked all the boxes, the only candidate to do so.

When he arrived in 2016, he rang the changes.  No disrespect meant to Ronny Deila or Neil Lennon, whose experience was limited to managing in Norwegian and Scottish football respectively, but Brendan had worked under Mourinho at Chelsea, then as boss at Liverpool, you’re just not going to get the same development opportunities at Stromsgodset.  On his return in 2019, Neil Lennon was gracious enough to acknowledge the advancement made since he left five seasons before.

In the years since Brendan was last at Lennoxtown, Celtic have pushed ahead again, most crucially in recruitment.  The systems and metrics used to evaluate players now are so far ahead of what Lee Congerton would recognise, it could be considered a whole new discipline.  Brendan is clever, he has acknowledged and embraced the progress.  He will also work with the prevailing financial and trading development plan – which is more expansive than it gets credit for.  Nothing was changed to induce him.

We have a successful tactical strategy which needs to be further developed, not abandoned. John Kennedy, Gavin Strachan and Harry Kewell remain.  Ange’s backroom team is now Brendan’s.  His long-term partner Chris Davies went to Tottenham, but again, Brendan acknowledged and embraced the progress made in the coaching staff since his departure.  As a result, I expect our style next season to be closer to that of Ange than it was previously under Brendan.

We are six weeks from the start of the season, bring it on.

Half the stuff I hear about the fight for good and evil in the Celtic Boardroom is made up imagined pish and the other half is PR fish on behalf of the imagined protagonists.

Two guys who had soap opera fall out are back in the same building and we think the backstabbing will renew. I tend to believe, totally bereft as I am of ITK info, that grown ups can get along with people they don’t like. Anyone who plays team sport knows that you can’t like all your teammates but you can still value and respect some of their qualities in the team.

I don’t believe in the Disrupter manager- the only exemplar of such is cokehead Elon- but neither should any club be free of disagreement on approaches. You thrash it out in discussions and then the Main coach makes the team decisions and the CEO the business ones as directed by Board and major shareholders. That applied during NFL’s disastrous second spell as much as it did in Brendan’s Invincible Year and with Ange.

New manager has my full support until he leaves or fails in our development task. He has my full backing while here, even though I suspect he will leave us again within 2 years.

  5. Guys as usual the new Celtic manager has been selected by Desmond. He has the First and final say. Peter Lawwell does Desmonds bidding or he wouldn’t be there.

    —–

I think its more a case of Desmond being happy to take a back seat for the most part, leaving the CEO to get on with it. He’s selective on when he gets hands on but once ge does, we know he calls the shots. I can’t think of another PLC in the UK which would allow a principal shareholder such a say on its affairs.

  6. A principal shareholder is a person or entity that owns 10% or more of a company’s voting shares. As a result, they can influence a company’s direction by voting on who becomes CEO or sits on the board of directors. Not all principal shareholders are active in a company’s management process.

My feelings is that for various reasons Peter Lawwell became marmite with the Celtic support, yet his dealings in the “black arts” and his command of twenty first century PR ensured that he had a large support base.

His successes were always highlighted, he always took credit for any of the clubs successes and his failures and omissions were swept under the carpet.

However, when he gave Lenny the managers job in the showers at Hampden and when the team crashed and burned in the TIAR season his position became untenable.

Although persona-non-grata amongst the faithful he still had support with the Celtic Board, well heeled support, shareholders, friends and ultras.

The fact is Peter managed to elevate himself to a “player” in Scottish and European football

Neil Doncaster would often rely on his expertise, especially when it came to the sale of broadcasting rights

He was well known if not exactly a mover and shaker within the ECA and Uefa circles.

It therefore made sense among his aficionados that he returned from Director of Celtic Football & Athletic Coy, to Celtic PLC.

This of course would not go down well with the vast majority of the Celtic support.

So when Ian Bankier resigned to make way for Peter, it had to be kept secret, even though the AGM was just weeks away from when the new Chairman would take up position, Celtic PLC had to keep Mr Lawwell’s promotion secret from fans and shareholders alike.

Having said all that, there is no doubt that PL is vastly experienced, that having “a face” on the ECA and Uefa is important for a Club like Celtic and that if he confines himself to his role and puts behind him the micromanagement and egotistical behaviour he can be a huge asset to the club.

So, going forward we should give big Pedro the benefit of the doubt and get right behind our new manager and Celtic football Club will reach the next level…

That’s an interesting list, it highlights what a mixed bag our recruitment was at that time – when you consider our City Group links and moneyball signings

“My feelings is that for various reasons Peter Lawwell became marmite with the Celtic support, yet his dealings in the “black arts” and his command of twenty first century PR ensured that he had a large support base.”

    —————————–

Ach, you’re entitled to your own feelings but not to your own facts. Marmite is likeed by 47% of the UK and 34% dislike or hate it with 19% never having tried or are indifferent.

PL never, in his best year, came close to that approval rating in any section of the support. Occasionally I have heard a good word extended towards him by people who know him now or knew him when he was younger but any poll on any site would show a default disapproval rating above 70% in any year he has been with us, a nd close to 100% in 2012. I don’t know who you mix with or speak to but I rarely ever hear talk about Board members or employees outwith the players and managers. The Board aka The Suits aka The Executive aka The Owner aka The Majority Shareholder aka The PLC have one role and one role only- to be in the wrong when things go wrong. I could count on the fingers of one under-fingered hand the amount of genuine Board Supporters on CQN and I’ve not encountered more than a rare handful of Board Supporters.

I do meet supporters who will laud Fergus but that only became a general view more than 5 years after he left. I have heard occasional praise for DD in landing MON, but not for landing WGS, and heard praise too for PL on rare occasions when it was not overwhelmed by the daily dose of over-blaming them when things go wrong.

Most supporters I meet are supporters of the players and management staff but are either Board-indifferent or Board- dislikers. I can’t believe that you are mixing with groups of Celtic supporters with any different make up. Who is the board lover on SC? Who are the Board Lovers on CQN? Would it be news to them?

Now defending a Board against silly accusations, such as all the good signings were Brendan’s and all the bad ones were Peter’s, does not make you a Board Supporter; it is just being fair an rational. We do not get people turning up to cheer a balance sheet ever; that is just another figment jibe.

    ——————————————-

His successes were always highlighted, he always took credit for any of the clubs successes and his failures and omissions were swept under the carpet.”

    —————————

Where did this happen? Read any Celtic site, including this one, and count the number of pro-Board statements and the number of accusatory ones. I’d guess you would see at least a 50 to 1 ratio.

The main sectarian split within the support is between the Board Haters who look down on those who merely have a Deep Loathing of the Board who look down on those who are merely mildly disgusted who look down on those who can take or leave them depending on what they are up to, who look down on those who are indifferent to matters they cannot influence, who can, in turn, if they choose, feel superior to the occasional Tony Donnelly Figure who thinks PL is cleverer than the support or any our Executive Supporters who have done business with them and have found them to be pleasant, helpful and genuinely Celtic-minded. We hate having our carefully chosen projections disillusioned by any reality.

I have consistently placed myself in the largely indifferent but trying to be fair to the guys. Could we do better than the current lot?- Most definitely!

But are all the woes laid at their door realistic- Naw- not for me- the enemy within narrative has never convinced- it is a childish form of reasoning.

P.S. Can you point to a statement from PL, as opposed to his “mouthpiece” Pual67, claiming the credit for Celtic successes. I can’t place any particular such boastfulness but I am prepared to look at actual evidence and attributed quotes from the Boasty Man himself.

I am aff oot now for a family meal- will catch up later
