Budget, recruitment, tactics: Brendan adopts

172

We don’t often hear from largest shareholder Dermot Desmond, but he issued a statement after yesterday’s appointment of Brendan Rodgers saying, “In appointing Brendan we believe we have again brought that quality to the club. Brendan is a very talented manager, he has huge experience at the highest levels and is a man who knows how to win and do so in style.

There was no shortage of candidates for the role, but the first line of the quote tell the story of why Brendan was appointed.  “Experience…. highest levels… knows how to win”.  One candidate was not prepared to leave Norway, one could not speak English and several excellent prospects were short of experience at the top level.  Brendan ticked all the boxes, the only candidate to do so.

When he arrived in 2016, he rang the changes.  No disrespect meant to Ronny Deila or Neil Lennon, whose experience was limited to managing in Norwegian and Scottish football respectively, but Brendan had worked under Mourinho at Chelsea, then as boss at Liverpool, you’re just not going to get the same development opportunities at Stromsgodset.  On his return in 2019, Neil Lennon was gracious enough to acknowledge the advancement made since he left five seasons before.

In the years since Brendan was last at Lennoxtown, Celtic have pushed ahead again, most crucially in recruitment.  The systems and metrics used to evaluate players now are so far ahead of what Lee Congerton would recognise, it could be considered a whole new discipline.  Brendan is clever, he has acknowledged and embraced the progress.  He will also work with the prevailing financial and trading development plan – which is more expansive than it gets credit for.  Nothing was changed to induce him.

We have a successful tactical strategy which needs to be further developed, not abandoned. John Kennedy, Gavin Strachan and Harry Kewell remain.  Ange’s backroom team is now Brendan’s.  His long-term partner Chris Davies went to Tottenham, but again, Brendan acknowledged and embraced the progress made in the coaching staff since his departure.  As a result, I expect our style next season to be closer to that of Ange than it was previously under Brendan.

We are six weeks from the start of the season, bring it on.

    CELTIC MAC

Agreed . Scotland look to be a very well coached , motivated and unified squad . A tribute to Steve Clarke, given the amount of time he has to work with the players .

It goes to show you what players are capable of when they aren’t told, they ain’t good enough to compete.

Our Captain scoring a peach on a rainy night against Georgia…

Thanks for the responses yesterday evening and apologies for the delay getting back…

    SFtBs @ 4:47 PM,

Well Celtic Boards have a history of not being trusted by the Celtic support, that’s true and for good reason.

As you say, even Fergus was not trusted at the time he helped save us and deliver short, medium and long term commerce, planning and infrastructure benefits.

The way big Pedro worked was not obvious, clear or transparent- his operation BR~exit was a case in point…

He took away resources that supported BR strengthening the team

When BR was considering leaving, he kept the negotiations between Leicester City and the Celtic Board quiet

When BR and staff left he exclusively gave the “story” to a freelance journalist so he could control the narrative

When Lenny became caretaker he exclusively gave the story to the same journalist so he could control the narrative

That journalist gave the impression BR had done a midnight flit, had tapped up the backroom staff and coined the phrase “Fraudgers”

Of course it wasn’t only the SMSM he controlled

Celtic social media was awash with anti Brendan stories, including one about BR having secret negotiations with the Chinese, tapping up Celtic players to take them to China – that PL got wind of this and informed DD about BR’s treacherous behaviour – not true of course

He failed to inform anybody, including the stock exchange about the £9mn in compensation Celtic PLC had negotiated with Leicester City

That compensation proved Celtic had been negotiating with Leicester over a period of time, that they were well aware of the manager, assistant manager and backroom staff that would be going to Leicester

That there was no excuse, either in time frame or cash wise, that Celtic could not have replaced their management and backroom staff with quality recruitment and additions.

When you realise that is the man’s m.o. you realise what you are dealing with – it’s ruthless, it’s single minded and it’s under the radar.

It’s interesting you suggesting that Paul67 doesn’t get his information from big Pedro anymore and those opinions on CQN are his and his alone

It really doesn’t show CQN on a good light for the past years and certainly shows it totally out of touch and wrong minded in the last month or so.

    AN TEARMANN @ 6:05 PM,

Very interesting link thank you, some very interesting past and present Directors there

I’m fine, hope all’s good with you and yours

THE EXILED TIM @ 7:05 PM,

Peter Lawwell gave the Green Brigade their “standing” area in the North curve, he also gave them keys to access Celtic Park and work shops so they could do their tifos and stuff.

There is good reason for their loyalty to big Pedro

    BOURNESOUPRECIPE @ 7:30 PM,

Back then the Celtic Executive had many irons in the fire for the moneyball production line but only one method of negotiating, come in lo-ball and try to catch a bargain

For me this was the wrong approach with twenty first century football players and agents.

Thomas Castagne is on record as saying he expected to go to Celtic, €8mn was the cost and the deal had to be done before the January transfer window opened.

Celtic as usual came in and lo-balled Atalanta and the deal went pear shaped, there is numerous other examples including Hibs with John McGinn

Even when it is successful, when we stayed up all night to get Pukki, it leaves a sour taste and resentment – we never did see the best of Pukki at Celtic Park.

My feelings on salary are this, the basic is relatively low but we top up players income with bonuses.

    Win bonuses for domestic games

    Playing in Europe bonuses

    Winning Trophies Bonuses

    Winning games in Europe bonuses

Celtic get more money from winning trophies, playing in Europe and more importantly winning in Europe

If the team and players are successful then they can achieve a high salary, Celtic get greater income so can afford to pay it’s star players these bonuses – a win-win

As Celtic pay more money to players due to European success, many of the other clubs will have to pare back their salaries to comply with FSR

Totally agree, Michael Nicholson and Chris McKay’s approach and relationship with Ange showed how successful and beneficial good player trading can be – let’s hope it continues with the new boss…

    Hail Hail

  9. Last day in Türkiye. Been a blast following CQN these last two weeks. Loving the to-ing and fro-Ing between SFTB and CHAIRBHOY…… two heavyweight boxers slugging it out is always box office.

    Good times ahead!

  10. Good morning from a sunny North Staffs – well done Scotland set up nicely for a catastrophic failure 🤣

Enjoy the longest day because tomorrow the nights start drawing in.

CHAIRBHOY How many trophy’s have Celtic won under Peter Lawell’s watch? Just asking for a friend 😆.

I have never met the man, don’t know anyone who knows him but I have concluded that he is indeed a huge Tim and Celtic supporter. Guess some of us alway need that escaped goat. Hail Hail.

Good morning all from sunny Govanhill. Another wonderful Wednesday awaits. What to do and where to go?🤔

  14. Chairbhoy

You really should be charging the Celtic chairman a fair bit of rent for the amount of time he spends in your head.

If you spent as much time supporting the club then perhaps I could understand.

    I genuinely worry for you.

  15. Chairbhoy

Hi mate.see my 6.05 answer to a wee bit of your 2.36.

“It therefore made sense among his aficionados that he returned from Director of Celtic Football & Athletic Coy, to Celtic PLC.”

    Hope your good

  16. Chairbhoy & SFTB – kudos to the pair of you for remaining polite in your ding-dong debate. Both of you make great arguments and counter arguments to defend your opinions. Personally, I am more aligned to Chairbhoy’s belief that CQN still takes a steer from PL and the last few weeks have not made great reading. But SFTBs views have been read with great interest and make a lot of sense too. Enough to make me hope that the chairman, CEO and DD are comfortable with the appointment, if not all delighted by it.

I am guessing neither of you are willing to give an inch though. Can we call it a virtual tie?

  17. WORLDWIDE coverage of rich pleasure seekers getting lost going down to see the wreck of Titanic.Unlike those professionals who discovered the wreck, who had 1 if not 2 spare craft on board so that if 1 failed another craft could be launched, this launch had no support

    I pray they are saved

    Compare and contrast

With the amount dieing via the inhumane scum ‘ stop the boats’ fascism going on in the English channel and the inhumane reportage of refugees crossing

Compare and contrast with what happened in Greece last week with hundreds of fellow human beings left to die or drown,an Irish tourist getting arrested for helping children as they washed ashore.

    Disgusting inhumanity

    Refugees are welcome
