Budget, recruitment, tactics: Brendan adopts

172

We don’t often hear from largest shareholder Dermot Desmond, but he issued a statement after yesterday’s appointment of Brendan Rodgers saying, “In appointing Brendan we believe we have again brought that quality to the club. Brendan is a very talented manager, he has huge experience at the highest levels and is a man who knows how to win and do so in style.

There was no shortage of candidates for the role, but the first line of the quote tell the story of why Brendan was appointed.  “Experience…. highest levels… knows how to win”.  One candidate was not prepared to leave Norway, one could not speak English and several excellent prospects were short of experience at the top level.  Brendan ticked all the boxes, the only candidate to do so.

When he arrived in 2016, he rang the changes.  No disrespect meant to Ronny Deila or Neil Lennon, whose experience was limited to managing in Norwegian and Scottish football respectively, but Brendan had worked under Mourinho at Chelsea, then as boss at Liverpool, you’re just not going to get the same development opportunities at Stromsgodset.  On his return in 2019, Neil Lennon was gracious enough to acknowledge the advancement made since he left five seasons before.

In the years since Brendan was last at Lennoxtown, Celtic have pushed ahead again, most crucially in recruitment.  The systems and metrics used to evaluate players now are so far ahead of what Lee Congerton would recognise, it could be considered a whole new discipline.  Brendan is clever, he has acknowledged and embraced the progress.  He will also work with the prevailing financial and trading development plan – which is more expansive than it gets credit for.  Nothing was changed to induce him.

We have a successful tactical strategy which needs to be further developed, not abandoned. John Kennedy, Gavin Strachan and Harry Kewell remain.  Ange’s backroom team is now Brendan’s.  His long-term partner Chris Davies went to Tottenham, but again, Brendan acknowledged and embraced the progress made in the coaching staff since his departure.  As a result, I expect our style next season to be closer to that of Ange than it was previously under Brendan.

We are six weeks from the start of the season, bring it on.

  1. SCANIEL & DENIABHOY,

Yes, guess we often produce more heat than light but hopefully there is some illumination in there

    Cheers AN TEARMANN,

    TAURANGABHOY @ 7:26 AM,

    Funny you should mention that…

    https://www.celticquicknews.co.uk/thirty-not-out-peter-lawwell-celtics-man-for-all-seasons/

According to CQN the Scottish League Cup this year was his thirtieth, so with the League Championship and SFA Cup my guess is…

…32, Yes big Pedro has won us thirty two trophies, no bad

I really don’t have an issue with him as CEO, from a financial background

Keeping the cash flow going and ensuring there was money in the bank and that the PLC’s obligations to shareholders were maintained.

My problem was his COO, CTO and DoF hats.

He was very poor in company operations and knew next to nothing on football matters.

Rather than get specialist execs in to help him with technology, projects, facilities, infrastructure, commercial, academy, football development, football recruitment – sporting excellence.

He either decided to do it himself (moneyball, merchandising) or ignore it (Stadium, Lennoxtown, Barrowfield upgrades)

It was a real hotchpotch, where we were patting ourselves on the back for besting Rangers but were getting left behind on every other aspect of running a large, modern, twenty first century, European football club

At the same time he got paid a salary and bonus as if he was doing three or four Directors jobs.

Made little sense to me but we have turned a corner and there is a bright new dawn.

Hopefully he will excel as Chairman having already won three out of three trophies:))))

    Hail Hail

  2. BURNLEY78 @ 8:20 AM,

    Thank you…

It’s called Pedrophobia, maybe I can get your e-mail and give you a list of all the things I need for support.

Your concern is very much appreciated

    Hail Hail

  3. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    Good morning CQN

Celtic won the treble – isn’t that great?

I know some journos would prefer to brush that incredible feat under the carpet … but it’s getting crowded in there.

Totally unrelated Roddy Forsyth-at-Ibrox is retiring?

Earlier poster mention his R@ngers shares.

Now totally worthless pieces of paper.

    A bit like Sevco shares?

    🤔🤔🤔🤔

    Have a good day all

    Hail hail

Morning Bhoys, usually enjoy the patter on etims. Left this morning more confused than anything.

Need to sell first is the general theme? Before going on about the master tactician with the third eye.

What are the chances: Brendan Rodgers manages us for the next three years, retires, and moves upstairs to become our first Director of Football?

A more likely scenario is Brendan Rodgers lasts until August when Lawwell signs a few Montenegro youth players and Bournemouth sack their newly appointed coach..Brendan leaves in early September

I am just about to drive down to Warrington for a few days- so our debate needs to end.

In your scenario of “Brendan was hounded out”, you have ignored or downplayed two factors.

    1) Brendan had already explored his China option behind the Board’s back. I trust the word of the witness who saw a heated row on this subject and we kept this off the blog and social media, because it would only harm Celtic to pass this on. That is why I see Brendan’s manufactured outrage at the failure to land McGinn or Castagne (both were aware of Celtic interest but chose to go to clubs they considered better for their career) in a different light. He was playing the support and it worked; it is so easy to paint the Suits as the baddies- I mean who is gonna cheerlead a balance sheet or a Director. I have given no more praise to Michael Nicholson than I gave to Peter Lawwell i.e. absolutely nil because they are operational managers- they do what they are told- if they don’t they get sacked. Dermot never got PL sacked but he accepted angrily that BR was working his passage. He has not been precious about this “betrayal”. He recognises why someone would want to better himself and that loyalty to. a contract only goes so far.

    2) What Moussa said about BR tapping him up to depart with him 9to an unnamed, as yet, club).

For me- this changes the reading of the runes.

And as for Moneybag failures- there are many and they are built into the system, But we have sourced 2 Right Backs In Juranovic and Johnston that were much cheaper than Castagne and just as good.

Brendan, second time around, needs help in the transfer market; he always did.

    Aff oot now

  9. BRRB,

Hope the weather plays ball down in sunny Ayrshire.

If you see the colourful taxi outing please give them a big wave ( And a healthy donation )

Today is the annual Glasgow taxi outing for children with special needs. It is a marvellous occasion with Taxi drivers et al giving their time and effort to ferry special needs children to the seaside.

Simply wonderful occasion especially after Covid and now with the cost of living crisis.

A big well done to all, including the Celtic Foundation and Lawrie Ross insurance

    HH.

  10. SFtBs @ 11:43 AM,

Hope you have a grand time down south…

As you are offski and we are finishing the narrative I’d normally leave things there

However you are repeating the hearsay and social media nonsense of 2019 that has been disproved, so I’ll briefly tell you what happened.

    1. Dermot Desmond clearly states in his interview with The Athletic that it was Brendan Rodgers that told him of the approach from China.

Brendan Rodgers got several approaches from Clubs while he was at Celtic, including Arsenal, BR was seen as a top manager and, at that time China was approaching all the top managers, it would have been more of a surprise had Brendan not been approached by China

    2. Moussa Dembele had agreed to come to Celtic in June 2016 after a meeting with Brendan Rodgers, Brendan had promised MD many things including top class coaching, European football and a transfer to a top Club/League

Over the seasons there had been a couple of clubs interested in Moussa, including Brighton and WBA, they didn’t float Moussa’s boat and there were no formal offers.

At the end of the summer transfer window of 2018 Lyon came in with a lucrative move for MD, Brendan vetoed it, Moussa was livid as he seen this as BR going back on his promise when Moussa had signed him for Celtic

Thems the facts, DD, PL, BR, MD may or may not come out of them looking good but this stuff happens in football all the time

    Hail Hail

  11. In Southwaite Service station- so I can reply.

Just because DD smoothed it over with that version of events does not make it a fact. I trust the person who witnessed the row- a man of honour who did not reveal the details on any media and sore me to a secrecy that I kept. Brendan had investigated an approach before he deigned to tell the Board. Dermot was furious at how soon he was seeking permission to leave and from then on the relationship was fractured and BR was playing the support.

Moussa has kept a fair degree of dignity in this situation. As a Star player, he was always gonna move on and we got a decent though probably not a commensurate fee when we transferred him. But, and this is a judgement call rather than an invented fact, Moussa showed a reticence and dignity in setting the record straight that was absent with a BR working his passage.

    Leaving Outhwaite now

  12. Very interesting to see that Anges first signing for Spurs is an Italian goallkeeper for £ 17.2 million.Obviously he thinks the French incumbent is a drawback.

H,mmm, would he think the same if had stayed with us.Hope Brendan does.Dont command your box seems to be a big no no.
