Cash windfall for Celtic fans

998

Readers of Celtic Quick News will know that our club has not been out of debt since Fergus gathered up our cash in 1994 and set about building the new stadium.  19 years later, with the mad arms race which consumed Scottish football over, we stand on the verge of coming out of debt.

The full consequences of this will not be known for years to come but the first material benefit is the £100 discount per season ticket Celtic announced today.  We’re no longer in debt, we can team-build in a measured and sustainable manner, and with Champions League money in the bank, Celtic have cut prices.

I know season ticket holders who missed out on the Barcelona, Spartak and Benfica games as, on top of everything else, they could not afford Champions League tickets.  If we get back to the group stage next season, supporters will be able to buy their season tickets and Champions League group tickets for less money than they paid for SPL tickets this season.

The return of the £50 under-13 ticket is also very welcome, along with a tiered level for older children.  With so many competing distractions, it is important that we bring as many young people into our community as possible.

Peter Lawwell’s comments underline the importance of bums on seats to everything that happens at Celtic, “The backing of our fans has, as ever, been crucial.  Domestically and in Europe they have once again been right with us and we felt it important that we rewarded their commitment by making this gesture”.

More welcome good news for the Champions.

Well done to Celtic for reducing ST prices, a bold but necessary move. This could mean more bhoys through the gates, means more merchandise, more food & drink sales (quality needs to improve), more programme sales etc.

Given the generosity of the Celtic family, a fair chunk will no doubt invest that £100 saving and more back into the club through other means. It will also make season ticket a little more affordable for those that could not join in due to the current financial times!

Kids ticket prices again are great and also helps the bhoys at the Kano Foundation. Once you get the Celtic bug it is hard to find a cure!

Organised crime? That will come out. I know an “Old Rangers” supporter who investigated (and wrote about) it in the 90’s. Gangsters.

  8. Teams have worked out how to play Barca. At their best, which usually means when Messi is at his best, they will still beat anyone. But when they’re not teams can beat them. Mourinho has worked out how to get the better of them and in the CL this season they have struggled all the way through. They need a change of menu, virtually the same squad for 5 years, they need defenders and an alternative goal threat to Messi up fornt.

Bus tycoon Sandy Easdale who was jailed over VAT fraud is courted as possible investor at Ibrox

    28 Nov 2012 07:42

THE bus boss has been asked to invest in the club after being jailed for 27 months over VAT fraud in 1997.

Sandy Easdale was given a tour of Ibrox

A TYCOON who served time in jail for a £1.5million VAT scam is being courted as a possible investor in Rangers.

Ex-con Sandy Easdale, now boss of a bus company, was given VIP treatment at Ibrox by Charles Green himself on Monday.

Easdale was jailed for 27 months in 1997 for a VAT fraud involving computer parts. The judge ruled he made £1.5million.

“Oldco” Rangers were plunged into administration in February after owner Craig Whyte failed to pay millions of pounds in PAYE and VAT bills.

A Rangers spokesman made it clear last night that the Ibrox hierarchy are relaxed about Easdale’s criminal history.

He said: “We are fully aware of Mr Easdale’s past and take the view that this was a long time ago. He served his time and paid his debt.

“Our view of Mr Easdale is that he is a respected figure in Scottish business circles and an employer of 1000 people across the country.

    “He also likes his football.

“Many faces from the business community are expressing an interest in investing in Rangers.”

Easdale, 44, the boss of McGill’s Bus Services and other businesses, was photographed laughing and joking with others on the steps at the main entrance to Ibrox on Monday afternoon.

The club spokes-man said: “Mr Easdale was one among a number of potential investors who were given a guided tour of facilities by Mr Green.

“The group were given a presentation by Mr Green on Monday morning.”

A source close to Rangers said Easdale was not being viewed as a “potential large investor” and had yet to decide whether to get involved.

Easdale was jailed at Croydon Crown Court in south London in 1997.

Customs investigators found stolen computer parts at his scrapyard in Greenock and uncovered a VAT scam which spread all over Britain.

It’s understood he served 18 months of his sentence.

After his release, Easdale continued to build his business empire. He ploughed cash into Greenock-

based McGill’s, now one of Scotland’s fastest-growing independent bus companies.

Scotland’s Traffic Commissioner has deemed him a fit and proper person to run a bus firm.

Easdale also listed himself at Companies House in 2010 as a director of Arranglen Ltd, a holding company for Inverclyde Taxis, who have the £2million-a-year cab contract for Glasgow Airport.

He said in 2010: “The conviction was almost 14 years ago. I run two very successful businesses and have nothing to be ashamed of.”

Easdale was not at his luxury home overlooking the Firth of Clyde yesterday.

Tax problems played a massive part in the destruction of “oldco” Rangers, forcing Green’s regime to rebuild the club from the ground up.

HMRC forced the oldco into administration after former owner Craig Whyte failed to pay an estimated £14million in tax.

Many Rangers fans blame the disastrous sale to Whyte on the “Big Tax Case” hanging over the club at the time.

  21. Hope Dortmund get a similarly decisive score tomorrow night. Doubt it though, Real have been focused on CL since their poor start to La Liga. What chances Mourinho wins CL for 3rd tome with 3rd different club then walks out?

  22. BCW – certainly feels like that.

Any update on the story that OG and Phil alluded to last week on our friends from Govan

  23. Tonight might be a good result for Barcelona in the long run.It might make them realise that having decent defenders isn’t a crime.

The reliance on Pique and a rarely fit Puyol is shocking for a club of their size. Having to rely on midfielders, wingers and young players has cost them. It’s nearly backfired in the past but this season it’s been glaringly obvious they are struggling at centre back.

Think V67 is young enough and would be amenable to intensive short-pass coaching. Win it and give it – doubt it would involve too much 5 yard passing.

Thinking there’s a Seedorf/ Vieira type player in the making with the right Club – we need to enjoy him for as long as we can.

  28. Great that 100 squid is coming off the season ticket. I’ll renew tomorrow.

  30. GEORGIOS Samaras has played a crucial part in a very successful season for the Hoops as his goalscoring exploits on the European front prove, so it was fitting that he added the icing on the cake by squeezing in the final Celtic goal in Sunday’s 4-1 championship-clinching romp over Inverness Caley Thistle.

The Greek striker came off the bench to add even more spark to an effervescent second-half display that had ‘We are the champions’ written all over it and he took time out from the post-match celebrations to speak to this week’s special championship Celtic View.

The View has a fantastic FREE fold-out A2-sized 2012/13 championship poster as well as a timely look back at a fantastic season for Neil Lennon and his Celts with input from the men who lifted the title.

Samaras said: “It is a great feeling, it has been a hard season for everyone but we deserve to be where we are. Everybody at this club, the supporters, the coaching staff, the medical staff, everyone working behind the scenes, we all have a lot to be proud of.

“We have done a lot this season and it isn’t over yet. We have the cup final to look forward to and we want to finish with the double.”

And when asked about his favourite memory of the season, he found it difficult to pinpoint one particular episode.

He said: “I have no bad memories at Celtic, it´s all good. Of course you have your ups and downs just like everyone else, but in the end I love this club and I do my best to be a winner.

“I never give up, I work hard and do everything to win games and win titles. It´s all about Celtic.

“Winning the league has, for sure, given us an extra incentive to win the double. This is a good time to go on and win it. We need to stay focused, stay healthy and go and entertain at Hampden.

“We deserve to win the league this year, 100 per cent. We are the best team with the best players both individually and as a team. The points’ gap could be bigger but in the end we deserve to be the champions.

“We had a great run in Europe, we are still having a good run in the Scottish Cup and we have done well in the league as well.”

He added: “We had some special nights in Europe and that might be why we were a bit flat in the league around that time. It was difficult physically and mentally but we bounced back from that and went on a good run.

“Neil Lennon brought the winning mentality back to the club. He played for so many years here and he knows exactly what the supporters want. He knows exactly what it takes to win in the Scottish game.

“He keeps it simple – not many players come in and not many go out. We are a close group, we want to fight for each other and that is the most important thing. Hopefully he will continue to be the manager of Celtic and he will go on and win many more trophies.”
