Celtic 1-0 Motherwell

733

Motherwell fought tenaciously for most of the game at Celtic Park this afternoon but a momentary lapse was all that Georgios Samaras and Gary Hooper needed to settle the contest.  Celtic moved an astonishing 23 points clear at the top of the table and are odds on favourite to become champions before the next return to Celtic Park.

Samaras was first to show after 9 minutes when he latched onto a Matthews flick but Darren Randolph was quick off his line to block.  Player of the Year elect, Charlie Mulgrew, then jinked past a defender before slipping the ball to Samaras.  The Greek’s shot was block and Mulgrew blasted the rebound wide.  Randolph then saved well after Samaras shot from inside the D.

While Celtic always looked dangerous, Motherwell were in no mood to concede, so the goal was surprising in its simplicity.  Adam Matthews fired a throw-in to Samaras, who chested the ball into the path of unmarked Gary Hooper.  Hooper put his laces through the ball from a narrow angle to give Randolph no chance.

Samaras, Hooper and Forrest all had chances to finish the game off but the second goal never arrived.

Good defences are a lot harder to quantify than poor defences.  Today Celtic strolled through the game at the back.  No one was stretched and Fraser Forster didn’t have a save to make until the 77th minute.

It looks inevitable that THEM will be liquidated, and I hope that Celtic have done their scenario planning.

Rightly or wrongly, I believe there will be pressure to re-admit ‘were the people’ into both SPL and SFA. Indeed , From my knowledge of the SFA rule book, re-entry to the SFA is about 99.9% certain.

In Celtic’s case, I think we need to consider / gameplan for :

    – other teams allowing THEM to remain in SPL, but, on the basis that TV money/ voting rights are more ‘fairly’ split. I suspect there will be a majority who will huff / puff but inevitably they will be fairly happy with a change in voting rights.

    – we need to think about the implications of THEM re-entering . My view would be that we negotiate a wild card exit ticket I.e. if you let them in, then we want a free exit pass that we can play anytime in the next 10 years. This would allow us to lobby the EPL / Championship over a sustained period, with a free exit pass and no parachute payments

    – I suspect that our pockets are deeper thn the SFA’s. If they won’t sanction our exit, them it’s either FIFA, the Sporting Court of Arbitration or the UK courts . My instinct would suggest that the SFA would posture and lobby , but wouldnt fancy a court battle that exposes their incompetence.

Not on the Celtic Bars specifically but I think there is going to have to be a major rethink about the kind of future Celtic wish to create. My initial thoughts are that all we might now have for financial support is each other and Celtic have to find a way to reach beyond regular match attenders and regualr match viewers to the wider Celtic minded folk who fall into neither category.

My future sees technology and a change in broadcasting restrictions producing a SB that allows games to be watched according to the desire of the holder but at the same cost to all watchers.

Seville???? (from memory) first articulated the notion of a universal SB but much work needs to be done to change the thinking that puts most of the support cost on match attenders.

Another dodgy handshake? Greig is almost certainly. Remember the Masonic distress sign to the fans invading the pitch in Barcelona 1972?

What was that and what did it constitute? will be on the look out for the people in distress.

I don’t hate their support either, they know no better, they have only taken the lead from their club.

    Their demise.

    What is demise ?

Relagation to the bottom tier, NO, for me their total obliteration is what’s called for, then I will go to my grave a happy Tim.

But if they do rise from the sewer, they will forever be tainted, that I could never have envisaged.

If that is what happens, I would be reasonably happy enough.

Any “solution” that damages the games integrity would give Celtic little choice but to signal they are off at first opportunity.

Any choice bu other clubs to allow a Newco back into the SPL would be on a financial basis. The financial consequences of losing Celtic who no longer could play in an environment where ethics and integrity were absent will focus minds.

Demise = deid. No more. Gone. Wiped out. Obliterated. Or even worse!

    Good night CQN.

Posted on RTC that it was not liquidators who were photographing at Ibrox today, but valuers, for Administration sales.

  15. Auldheid,

Letting THEM back in will involve a change in the rules.

We should ensure that this changing of rules works to our advantage.

If the SPL votes to let THEM back in ( which I think they will), we should throw the legal rule book at them , to negotiate an exit pass.

If we were in the Championship and won promotion, the precedent of Swansea would make it very difficult for anyone to block us.
