Celtic 5-0 St Mirren

1271

Celtic swept St Mirren aside this afternoon as a hat-trick from Gary Hooper and goals from Georgios Samaras and Dylan McGeough

Celtic came roaring out of the traps and blew St Mirren away this afternoon.  Georgios Samaras got the show underway on 4 minutes when he collected the ball after Marc McAusland failed to make a clean connection on the ball.  Samaras still had a lot to do and carried the ball into the box.  With defenders closing in from all around the Greek striker placed his shot instead of going for power.  St Mirren keeper, Craig Samson got a hand to the shot but the ball spun slowly towards goal and settled 8” over the line.

Four minutes later, a clearly confident Samaras drove into the St Mirren penalty box before cutting the ball left for Anthony Stokes, who’s fired cross was turned over the line from 3 yards by Gary Hooper.

Samaras was running the show but was hampered by a knock to the ankle which he took a few moments to recover from.  This coincided with St Mirren’s best period of play as the visitors gained more possession and territorial advantage in the period before half time.

Celtic started the second half just as brightly as they did the first as Hooper and Kayal could both have added to the score, however, the third would arrive 8 minutes into the second half.  Victor Wanyama played an excellent forward pass to Stokes who hit the goal line before cutting back for Gary Hooper.  Hooper collected with his back to goal but spun and shot in a sweeping move that left Samson with no chance.

Hooper completed his hat-trick on 57 minutes when he tried to play a one-two with Stokes but the ball was returned by a defender, allowing him to chip the on-rushing Samson.

18-year-old Dylan McGeough made his first impact as a Celtic player minutes after replacing James Forrest when he collected the ball 10 yards in front of his own box, ran 70 yards into the St Mirren box, before creating space and despatching Celtic’s fifth goal.  An unforgettable moment for the young player.

Sone, worth every penny he paid for himself.

  2. Was out today, just got back and seen the result. Amazing. But perhaps not so surprising. They’re already a weakened squad, and once Jelavic goes at xmas they’ll be in dire straights. Time to take advantage, Lenny.

  7. The Others looked lost today well before the Killie goal. Yes they had a chance or two and yes Killie did have a couple of last ditch clearances to make, but Kilmarnock were also unlucky not to score a couple more.

Mr Jelavic has obviously believed his own predictions and downed tools for the season. He is a player I grudgingly admit to worrying about but he was awful today. I wonder if he thinks the 4 point lead they have now is unassailable? The psychology of sport is a wonderful thing. Letting a big lead slip is very hard to recover from.

I thought Aluko played well for them but when either Jellyfish or Davis don’t play well, which neither of them did, I don’t see what else The Others have to offer. The fact that they are bringing on Fleck whose mind must surely be on the forthcoming glamour of his loan move to, eh, Hull, is telling. Where is Ortiz? Bedoya showed exactly why he isn’t on the team sheet each week. Goain is liable to Majstorovic like mistakes but has got away with it so far in a moer settled and confident defence that we have enjoyed.

I suspect we are about to witness a full on return to the wattienaccio with reliance on getting a goal and defending for their lives.

I think we will be ahead of them before the year is out. A long way to go yet but it feels a helluva lot better than 30 days ago!

Funny how Rugby park always looms large in the destination of the title eh? Our come back from 3-0 down sparked our recovery. And they lose today pretty much reopening the race. Look back through recent history – several titles decided there either way, Tony Mowbray getting us skelped after a mental day in the transfer window, Nakamura’s free kick to bring home the bacon, them last year, losing on goal difference there in 2003…..

    Funny.

  8. Got up out of bed to watch the last 10 minutes of the Huns game and logged into CQN only to read the tragic news of Gary Speed’s death. Any death is tragic, but a young person taking his or her own life is hard to take.

Anyway, didn’t I predict a Killie victory on CQN prior to kick-off? I said that mob’s luck had run out.

RANGERS are being investigated by a London-based stock exchange for allegedly failing to disclose new owner Craig Whyte’s previous directorship ban.

PLUS-SX, which the Ibrox club trades on, requires firms to announce whether any new directors have been disqualified from “acting in the management or conduct of the affairs of a company”.

Sanctions for breaching the rule can include a fine of up to £100,000 and firms not being allowed to trade shares on the exchange.

A PLUS spokesman said of the alleged non-disclosure of Whyte’s ban: “PLUS Regulation are looking into this matter.”

Whyte shot to prominence earlier this year after one of his firms, Wavetower Ltd, acquired an 85.3% stake in The Rangers Football Club plc.

Around the same time, Whyte and his business associate Phil Betts also became club directors. PLUS confirmed the deal in May.

However, PLUS rules make clear that “issuers”, in this case Rangers PLC, must announce certain information “as soon as possible” about new directors.

This includes directorships held over the past five years, as well as details of some unspent convictions.

Firms also have to supply information about new directors’ involvement with companies which have gone into administration, receivership or liquidation.

Crucially, the rules also require: “Details of any official public incrimination or sanction of such person by statutory or regulatory authorities … and whether such person has ever been disqualified by a court from acting in the management or conduct of the affairs of a company.”

A BBC Scotland documentary last month revealed Whyte had been banned as a director by the Insolvency Service in 2000 for seven years.

Motherwell-born Whyte made his name in the 1990s in the security and plant hire business.

Whyte was disqualified as a director after the Government began to pursue his firm, Vital Holdings, for failing to produce satisfactory accounts. By the time the ban came into force, Whyte had left Scotland for Monaco.

However, it is alleged that Rangers never announced the disqualification when Whyte became a director. The disqualification is not mentioned in any of Rangers’ statements posted on the PLUS-SX website.

Breaching the rules can result in PLUS imposing “disciplinary sanctions”.

A spokesperson for the PLUS regulation department told the Sunday Herald that the “disqualification of a director” is “treated as information required to be disclosed pursuant to Rule 71 and Appendix 1, Rule 18. In the case of Mr Whyte PLUS Regulation has taken account of recent accusations over the possibility of Mr Whyte failing to make adequate disclosure under the PLUS Rules and is progressing these concerns”.

Asked if this meant Whyte’s disqualification had not been disclosed and that PLUS was investigating this issue, the spokesman added: “Indeed. If Mr Whyte were disqualified from acting as a director then this should have been disclosed. PLUS Regulation are looking into this matter.”

It is understood that PLUS has been in contact with the Insolvency Service over Whyte’s disqualification.

In the past, PLUS has imposed sanctions on firms for rule breaches. Earlier this month, China CDM Exchange Centre Ltd was fined £12,500 after it was found to have imposed restrictions on the transferability of shares.

Prior to the fine, PLUS suspended trading in the securities of the same firm.

News of the investigation comes against a backdrop of financial uncertainty for Rangers.

The club is awaiting the outcome of a £49 million tax battle with HMRC, a case that could result in the owners going into administration.

Former chief executive Martin Bain and ex-finance director Donald McIntyre have also launched legal bids to freeze the club’s assets in separate cash disputes.

Glasgow-based legal firm Levy & McRae, which also acts for The Herald and Sunday Herald, successfully took Rangers to court over an unpaid bill. Rangers settled another alleged debt with law firm Fyfe Ireland last week.

This newspaper revealed recently that The Rangers FC Group Ltd – which used to be called Wavetower and now owns the 85.3% stake in the club – had missed a deadline for filing its annual return.

However, the firm has since submitted the document to Companies House.

It shows the plc has three directors, Whyte, Betts and Andrew Ellis, while the sole shareholder is Whyte’s Liberty Capital Ltd.

A statement issued jointly on behalf of Craig Whyte and Rangers FC plc read: “These accusations were made in a recent BBC Scotland documentary which is now the subject of litigation. While legal action is ongoing, it would be inappropriate to make any public comment. Any announcements will be made in due course through the proper channels.”

An Insolvency Service spokeswoman confirmed Whyte had been disqualified as a director in 2000.

“Given the Hun’s financial position I still think it is a shrewd move.”

Rangers have a multi-million pound turnover and have spent more money than Celtic in the last five years.

I find it astonishing that you are willing to cut the Huns so much slack over the Aluko deal. Especially when you stick the boot into Celtic on a regular basis.

Not even in our darkest hours in the early 90s did Celtic ever ask players to dig into their own pockets to sign for the club. This is at least the second time the Huns have pulled this stroke.

  16. Now, riddle me this: if Aluko paid £150K to get out of his contract what kind of wages is he on? If he is on a very generous and unlikely £15K a week then he has until February to earn it back. Is he aware that his new contract may well not be honoured after that time?

I hope he has enough left over for a good legal team – better than those of the many creditors who are way ahead of him in the queue!!

My suspicion is that Aberdeen have made all of this up. Agent Aluko – remain active until further notice, more acts of sabotage required in near future!

“I think it is wrong and is a measure of your financial health or lack of ambition – for the Huns it;s the former – had it been Celtic it would hve been the latter.

Given the Hun’s financial position I still think it is a shrewd move. ”

Do you see no link between financial health and ability to be ambitious?

After all, you are part of the dominant view on here that a financial output will pay for itself, but mind, we’re only talking about a wee bit debt, £5m here or £10m there. You’ve got to speculate to accumulate and the debt will get you trophies and success.

And, before you know it you’ll have over extended your debt line because your first £5m was blown on a one-season wonder and your next £10m signing is crocked so you need to speculate again. Before long, you are reduced to dodgy tax avoidance schemes, agent linked financial shenanigans and getting players to pay to play. And then 125 years of sporting history goes down the drain because “you deserved better than to put up with this mince because my ambition is for you to spend money indulging me.”

I fail to see the shrewdness in this plan :-)

I use higher standards when judging Celtic..

I’m not cutting Huns any slack..I know Aluko as a player and I do think he could prove a decent signing…but I still believe the arrangement is fundamentally wrong..but the Huns are accustomed to doing wrong things..

Put it this way – I wouldnt want Aluko at Celtic, but if we were interested then getting him for free..giving him a 6 month trial and having him pay compensation is minimising risk as much as you can?

I just have a wee inclination that Aluko might come good – hopefully not against us!

I’m DELIGHTED with the progress we have made..and I have already said it goes well against my expectations. I’m not alone in that – I’m probably more honest than many inasmuch as I’m happy to come on CQN and say so…

I’m sure I don’t need to tell you who is not good enough – you should already know.Put it this way – any player who is in his 3rd season but is not a first team regular should go (Sammi is the exception).

I’m on record as saying I’d like a new goalie who is a Celtic owned permanently contracted player, I don’t like our CB options, particularly Dan.

I’m not keen on Ki or Brown, either

On the otherhand, I like Kayal, Mulgrew, Stokes, Sammi – all players other CQN-ers can get wired in to..but it’s all about opinions..
