Celtic Champions League campaign starts in Armenia

56

Celtic will face Armenian champions Alashkert in the Champions League, first qualifying round, with the away tie first.  Alashkert faced Andorran opposition in the corresponding round last season, winning 2-1 on aggregate, before losing to BATE Borisov in round two.

The travel is far from ideal but that aside, this should be a straightforward round for Celtic to negotiate.  There is no summer football in Armenia, so Alashkert will be no further forward in their fitness regime than Celtic.

The first leg takes place on 10th or 11 July with the return in Glasgow on the 17th or 18th.  The draw for the Champions League second round takes place this afternoon.

Whats the point of that post

Irish people can support any football team they like whether that be Celtic Rangers Falkirk Arsenal Real Madrid or Man United etc etc

The only thing Irish people turn their back on when they choose to support a team outside Ireland is the domestic league which needs all the support it can get.

  2. beat the Armenians and we play winner of Valur Rekjavik and Rosenburg 1st leg at home

    Champions League 2nd Qualifying Round

Alashkert or Celtic v Reykjavik or Rosenborg

First Leg 24/25 July – Second leg 31st July /1st August

  4. We played Valur Reyjkavic back in 1975, 7-0 at home, 2-0 away. I think they were Shuggie Edvaldsson’s old team

Just watching the Japan game. Think their opponents could do with an eleven million pound striker in their team. If only they knew of one born in their country.

  6. Rosenborg currently 3rd in Norway after 13 games, 7 points behind leaders Brann.

Valur currently 1st in Iceland after 9 games, 1 point ahead of 2nd place Breidablik

The first leg in Armenia is scheduled for July 10/11, with the return leg a week later at Celtic Park, on Wednesday July 18 (KO: 7.45pm). Further information to follow on the dates and times of both legs.

Should Celtic see off Alashkert of Armenia, they will face the winners of the Rosenborg versus Valur Reykjavik tie in the second qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League.

  8. There used to be a direct flight to Yerevan from London Heathrow and also one from Charles de Gaulle. Failing that it is via Frankfurt and or Moscow! Nice city. Plenty of accommodation options. Great weekend market near Republc Square!

  9. We knocked out Rosenborg last season without a recognized striker fit for either leg (Griffiths came on as sub in 2nd game). Hopefully with Moussa, Eddy and Griff fit it’ll be a lot easier this season.

  10. what a stupid tournament the champions league is now, they’ve got teams that won their league flying 6 hours to play each other in the middle of the summer and then one team thats halfway through the season playing another thats weeks away from starting theirs, in the first two qualifying rounds, 5 minutes after we’ve finished our season and while we still have important players at the world cup

After that who knows what for another two rounds.

I’m not sure they cold have devised a more stupid 4 round tournament to decide who plays in the groups
