Celtic exploit Wednesday collapse, a morality tale in two players

725

Celtic’s pillage of Yorkshire’s young talent continued yesterday with the arrival of 20-year-old Dutch player Osaze Urhoghide from Sheffield Wednesday.  Osaze is a central defender and arrives a few days after fellow Wednesday graduate, midfielder Liam Shaw.

Sheffield Wednesday are in turmoil.  Their most recent published accounts, to June 2019, showed a trading loss of £17m on a turnover of £22.8m – horrendous, but an improvement on the previous year’s trading loss of £23.7m.  They sold Hillsborough for £38m during season 2018-19, switched the accounts to a £19m profit, but they are now a club without a stadium-sized asset on the balance sheet.

Since then, a bad situation has gotten considerably worse.  Despite being the biggest team in the Championship by some margin, the finished bottom of the table in May; at least one season of third tier football awaits.

In short, Osaze and Liam may read about Celtic’s supposed turmoil last season and kick into the Monty Python Four Yorkshiremen sketch:

“You were lucky. We lived for three months in a paper bag in a septic tank. We used to have to get up at six in the morning, clean the paper bag, eat a crust of stale bread, go to work down t’ mill, fourteen hours a day, week-in week-out, for sixpence a week, and when we got home Peter Lawwell would thrash us to sleep wi’ his belt.”  I’m pretty sure that’s how I remember it.

Football is a zero sum game and where one giant club disintegrates, others see opportunity.  Young players with talent and options will not stay.

Celtic were able to use the arbitrage permitted to them with not being bound by transfer rules between two FA member clubs.  That money, perhaps in the region of £5m a piece for Shaw and Urhoghide, went on wage offers outbidding clubs from England.  It’s a rerun of the Dembele deal from four years ago.

I have been saying for years the Championship is the most dysfunctional league in the world.  It also causes Scottish Premiership clubs more trouble than any other.  Where Wednesday have gone, others will follow.  It is a morality tale in the making.

I think it’s news now……….Baldock was quoted at 5-8million don’t think we would spend that much on a back or maybe they just threw that figure out there.

Re Baldock ….would we really not spend that amount on a ‘back’? Would we spend it on a forward? Surely a goal saving tackle is as valuable as a goal scoring shot!

Hope you and your sisters are doing well. Tell G. I was asking for her.

As for my blog name, I started to post on here in 2006 which was the 50th Anniversary of my mother’s (Sadie) passing. I decided to call myself SadiesBhoy in her honour.

Not long after someone hacked the blog and lots of posters couldn’t log in. I had to change my details and added The Original to let me get access again.

We might spend it but i don’t think we will, we better spend our money wisely.

Right and left back another centre half and striker at least.Maybe a GK but i still say IF we had a decent defence then i think we would be ok there.

  7. Not sure on Dom or Ange yet.

No Dof or back room staff (might be same).will wait to see how the first couple of weeks of the new season goes.

  9. Ireland today consists of the Provinces of Connacht, Leinster, Munster, and Ulster – in ancient times, however, a fifth province really existed. This also explains the original name of the provinces, which all refer to “the Fifth”.

The fifth province was simply called “the Middle”, in Irish an mhí – today this name is used by both Counties Meath and Westmeath, they would roughly conform with the borders of the ancient fifth province, the seat of the High King (which also explains Meath’s nickname “the Royal County“).

Purists might argue that the fifth province of Ireland wasn’t quite in the middle.

The earliest recorded mention of the major division of Ireland is in the Ulster Cycle of legends, such as the Táin Bó Cúailnge.[21][22] The Táin is set during the reign of Conchobar Mac Nessa, king of Ulster, and is believed to have happened in the 1st century.[23] In this period Ireland is said to have been divided into five independent over-kingdoms, or cuigeadh whose rí (kings) were of equal rank, not subject to a central monarchy.[21][1][23][24] Pseudo-historians called this era Aimser na Coicedach, which has been translated as: “Time of the Pentarchs”;[21] “Time of the Five Fifths”;[23] and “Time of the provincial kings”.[24] It was also described as “the Pentarchy”.[21][22]

Muman (Munster), with its royal seat at Teamhair Erann.

Laigen Tuathgabair (North Leinster), with its royal seat at Tara (before it became the seat of the High King).

  13. BhoyJoeInBelfast’s post has brought back childhood memories of playing football in the street with my cousins and pals. We used to commentate as we played,”Fernie onthe ball. Beats one man, two men and scores for Celtic!” 🤣 Sometimes we would become European players and Puskas, Di Stefano or Gento would take the place of Willie Fernie who we all adored.

    Happy Days.

I know the default sentiment is ‘anyone but Engerland’.

But as fluid and energetic as Italy is, for me their gamesmanship makes it ‘anyone but Italy’.

Ireland’s province of Munster, in Irish Cúige Mumhan or Chúige Mumhan, is mainly defined as the South-West of Ireland. It was home to (and thus “the Fifth”) of the followers of Mumha – who was either a warrior queen, or a goddess, or maybe both. As Munster originally consisted of three major kingdoms (Thomond, Desmond, and Ormond) it still has three crowns in its flag.

“Anyhow,I remember as a lad and kicking the ball about,a fellow Celt ( noel Brown) who ended up in Australia, calling me Willie Fernie, anyone on here enjoy a similar nickname.”

    —————————–

When I played football, lots of commentators said “He plays like a Total Fernie”.

I think that’s what they were saying

  17. Good to see and hear more interviews letting us hear Ange’s approach on Celtic TV. However our interviewer WILL continue to preface his questions ( he did it twice in a four minute interview ) by saying , ” I guess …………. or ” I’m guessing………….” Are we really interested in his theories? Why does HE have to be the centre of the question. Do we care what he is guessing?

Faced by this insolent amateurism, Ange showed the importance of the pause. He slowed down the tempo of the narrative, retained possession ( limiting the chance of getting asked more inane questions) and paused on the ball/question to see which way to go. The same pause a player gets after he has controlled a pass and looks to see what’s on.

Please, let’s have more inquisitiveness and less presumption from our interviewers.

  18. Confession time- my ex split up with me because I didn’t buy her flowers.

My fault- didn’t even know she sold flowers…….🙃

  19. Regarding Ange, not sure even with what appears to be the beginnings of a more transparent social media programme, we’ll see all sides of his personality/management styles. Certainly on the training pitch it appears ruthless and authoritarian (which I’m happy with) and I’m sure he has other levels which he hinted would be part of the Training camp- team building/ bonding.

Anyone know much about his former assistants? Are they jovial types?

Maybe over thinking it, but good to have a mediator with such a strong leader…..🍀

Can we at least preserve a Saturday for Celtic/football chat?

    ——–

You address your above post only to me – I would never attempt to tell anyone, who sticks to the rules, what to post….or even those who continually post abuse & personal attacks, that is not my prerogative.

Are you aware that less than 25% of all contributions posted today Saturday, have anything to do with Celtic/football chat? That means 75% of all Saturday posts are about topics other than “Celtic/football”

I do not see multiple posts from you addressing all those other posters….why would that be?

Information about the pandemic in Scotland that has prevented us from going to games is most certainly relevant to Celtic. Our club was singled out for ‘different’ treatment during Covid. Politics has played, and is playing, a significant role in how Celtic Football Club and its supporters deal with this Covid curse.

  21. JHB on 3RD JULY 2021 4:20 PM

Quite simply a rest from all things ‘covid’ would be nice. Some see the the blog as a respite from dealing with the crisis in which we are all living whether that be life in general, work, family/friends or any of the affore mentioned.

  22. Fully aware on another day it could be someone else from a different political view point starting or setting the scene for the day’s chat. In fairness I don’t come here to listen to anyone else’s political opinion -nothing on here changing my views as I’m fairly sure most posters/lurkers are the same. Sadly, i occassionally get irked with those who campaign as ultimately it shows a lack of respect to the blog imho. Especially when it’s lies, abuse or discriminatory.

Does anyone really walk up to the ballot box and think ;” mind that post on cqn? That’s changed my vote…..” i highly doubt it.

  23. I’m not so full of myself to think I have more importance or gravitas than any other poster (despite enjoying reasoned debate)

But I think an occassional reminder of the blog as a virtual social event. A virtual Cellic Shop/pub.

The end – boring myself now- apologies to those un-entertained. 🍀

With all due respect, I do not come on CQN to campaign. I come on to post my opinions on matters of interest.

    Q. What are matters of interest?

    A. Anything that concerns, or, affects Celtic and/or Celtic supporters.

That is surely what this blog is all about. A blog without different views and opinions is not a blog – it is probably a “campaign” vehicle.
