Celtic have an oddity to put right

780

It is early enough in the season that Celtic have ample scope to recover from the odd reversal but with October just around the corner Neil Lennon and his players will be wondering why they have not won two consecutive league games this season.  This particular oddity can be put right tomorrow if Celtic win and leapfrog Motherwell, who sit precariously at the top of the SPL, albeit having played a game more.

There is also probably some fine-tuning required on formation.  We kept a clean sheet in both Champions League qualifying away games but have not achieved one in three away SPL games against weaker opposition than Helsingborgs or HJK Helsinki.

Motherwell exited the League Cup on Wednesday but don’t expect this to sap momentum; Celtic on Saturday is their cup final.  We can expect a direct and physical challenge on what is likely to be a heavy pitch.

An early goal from the champions would settle the nerves.  If they get this, don’t be surprised if they go on to win comfortably.  Despite indifferent form this season the signs are there that Celtic are getting their game together.  Prediction: 0-4.

    Paul

I think the Well game will be a big test for us.

We have a big squad but we don’t have a settled team.

We don’t have a settled team for various reasons (injury, new recruits, youngsters knoking at the door).

The Fir Park quagmire isn’t the best place to bring back players just getting over injury (ex: Sammi and Super Joe) in the hope that they’ll get a run out before next Tuesday’s game.

The Well players won’t give a repeat of their insipid performance the other night, they will come out snarling and kicking, hoping to hold on to their precarious top position in the table.

Wee Gollum will be his usual incompetent self.

We need a team filled with guys that can handle themselves: Broonie, Beram, Big Vic, Big Efe, and Charlie all come into that category.

I agree an early goal could be crucial, but I wouldn’t be suprised if there was a share of the points at the end of the day.

    Hope I’m wrong.

  2. Tomorrow’s game will be the first away game on a Saturday kicking off at the traditional 3pm slot in almost 7 years.

The previous one was a 5-0 win over Livingston on 1 October 2005.

    The team that day was:

    Boruc

    Telfer

    Camara

    Balde

    McManus

    Sutton

    Nakamura

    Maloney

    Zurawski

    Beattie

    Petrov

Goals were scored by McManus, Maloney, Zurawski, Sutton and Beattie.

Early goal at Perth didnt help much! I’ll go 3-2 to the Bhoys tomorrow, early goal for us followed by a couple of penalties for Mulletwell only for us to come roaring back with 2 goals in the last 20mins. Does that add up to 3-2!?

  4. Mort, a repeat of that scoreline would be perfect,eh?

Can’t stick McCall and most of his players!

  5. Motherwell should be pretty much rested after their midweek bounce game. I expect us to win by the odd goal in three.

Watched the training session this morning, the Bhoys are absolutely flying. Good to see Sammy involved, the injuries are clearing up nicely.

Go on you Celts, attack, attack, attack.

    You know

see these papers that spin the agendas……

why don’t the high heid yins at CP just – ban them ?

If that happened then folk like me would be bought

over by the – Solidarity that would be booming from CP.

    Until then….

That’s on a par with the Huns shouting out to ra bomber – that they needed a leader…

  8. Would love to be as confident as you Paul but I think you’ve ignored the referee factor.

We have to beat Motherwell and the referee , incompetent is not the word I would use to describe him.

Will be interesting what a Saturday 3pm & no live tv coverage does to the attendance at fir park.

Shurely a shell out?? If not, Motherwell fans should be slated in the media.

  10. TET

Since then we have had the Setanta TV deal as well as now Sky/ESPN and with Celtic being the biggest draw in the league, broadcasters have always wanted to show all our away games.

This would have been a Sky game but with the game in CL on Tuesday night, a Sunday game was not permitted and ESPN already had an SPL game scheduled so leaves us having to play 3pm on a Saturday.

I’m happy as it means our hardcore away fans don’t have to get up at “stupid-o’clock” to travel to the game and I’ll just wait as usual and watch it tomorrrow night or Sunday morning “as live” on CelticTV.

re. Samaras. He’s played 480 mins so far this season, and has 2 goals and three assists. That makes him behind only Watt and Commons in terms of goals/assists per minute.

Besides, if goals and assists were the be all and end all, Stokes would have got more games than he did last season, while Paddy would have been first pick every time in Season 2010/11. Sammi retains possession and plays intelligently – crucial for European games.

I like the call to arms for the midfield with Broonie and Big Vic et al, the only problem is Gollum will have the cards at the ready if we try and play their game. I agree though, play our warriors to counter their cloggers.

  16. Just a little observation/opinion…

If I was Neil then, the tactics deployed in the Benfica game should be the way-we-go in the CL as, due to all the yearly cut-backs in team quality – we are now the wee guys in the CL.

Pot 4 material right enough. imo.

Neil, please be cynical wi yer tactics and, I think a few surprises will be instore.

Samaras ledley wanyama brown, with commons behind hooper.

    Good shout m8.

But, if you don’t mind….I’d like to make a little alteration

Ledley at LB in place of Izzie who – imo – is nowhere

near recapturing his POTY form any time soon.

Take a chance on big Efe’s calming influence in the CL.
