Celtic history against Italians

784

Lazio were Celtic’s first Italian opponents when the clubs drew 0-0 in Rome in 1950 before a Celtic Park rematch a few months later when Celtic won 4-0.  The next four occasions Celtic met Italian teams would all be played on neutral ground, starting with a draw against Bologna on a 1966 preseason tour of the United States, before a notable win against Inter in Lisbon at the end of that season.

Celtic then met Milan four times in 10 months starting in May 1968.  It was back to the US for a 1-1 draw, before a rematch a month later in Toronto when goals from Bobby Lennox and Charlie Gallacher won the game.  The teams then drew 0-0 in the San Siro before Milan won the return 0-1 at Celtic Park, the first time in eight games against Italian opposition Celtic emerged with a defeat.

Italian champions Fiorentina lost at Celtic Park in 1969 before winning the return game while a year later Celtic drew twice against Bari on a North American tour.  Inter and Celtic then met in the 1972 European Cup semi-final, both games finishing goalless, before a nine year wait until the next game against Italian opponents and the first against Juventus.  Celtic won at home and lost in Turin.

Three games in four days in July 1993 saw a win over US Carisolo and defeats against Atalanta and Napoli.  Four years later Parma and Roma visited Celtic Park, with the home team achieving a draw and win.  2001 saw Celtic’s first Champions League group games and two memorable games against Juventus, losing controversially in Turin before recording a 4-3 win in Glasgow.

Parma lost at Celtic Park in 2002 with Roma beating Celtic in Toronto in 2004.  Celtic then embarked on a familiarity drive with Milan, drawing twice at home and losing the corresponding away fixtures in 2004 and 2007.  A home win over Parma in summer 2007 briefly interrupted Celtic’s run of Italian fixtures against Milan but the teams met another twice in 2007, Celtic winning at home and losing away.

Celtic lost to Inter in Dublin in 2011 before drawing home and away to Udinese in the same year.  Kris Commons scored Celtic’s goal in their most recent match against Italian opponents in a Celtic Park draw last July.

36 games in 63 years, 11 wins, 11 defeats and 14 draws.  The team in green and white won the most important one!

Early notice, the CQN Charity Golf Day will take place on Friday, 14 June.  More details to follow.

Yes.Johann Murdoch is going to pick him up at Celtic Park,or,where-ever he gets dropped off.

I’m going to call the Ceder Inn in a wee while to see if they will have a late license on golf night.

  2. Re Tuesdays starting 11…….

If wee J Forrest is fit, I think he will start. This wouldn’t be my choice incidental, but I think the manager will go with him down the right.

A Fit Sammi – God willing – occupies the left berth of a 5 man mid.

This leaves Brown, Wanyama and Ledley to occupy the middle. A good trio to do that.

Only thing that sits badly is no starting berth for Commons, though I’m guessing we will see him after an hour or so. I think Kris has been one of our better performers at CL level?

If Sammi doesn’t make it, Charlie Mulgrew will step into the middle I think.

    Still, the manager knows best!

Finding the best back 4 will be a real challenge.

Efe is well involved -almost scored from set play -solid and comfortable in defence and moving forward

looking every in like a world class footballer

  4. googybhoy – I think the junction you want to come off at is now classed as 2A, 1st one is classed as cambuslang (junction 2, I think), best one to use is only 200 yards past this, takes you off at very top of London Road,

    Hope this helps

    Hail Hail

Bhoylo83 @ 13.57 I saw that documentary sometime ago. It is very good/sad! Colombia in 1993-94 did indeed have a fabulous team with some great players. Tino Asprilla, Carlos Valderrama, Freddy Rincon and the tragic Andres Escobar. Can you even begin to understand the pressure on those players going into the game against USA? For anyone interested, YouTube and type in 30 for 30 The Two Escobars…you won’t regret it…

  6. Stringer Bell- I would play Lustig RB & Matthews LB , I still think Izzy has a wee bit to go to get back to his best.

Cheers I found it. Jct 2 was best. Called in at Celtic shop today. Last time I came off at Dalmarnock and went through the building site for the Commonwealth Games.

    Back in Manchester now.

Can’t disagree with your assessment of who our front six should be though I’ve a horrible feeling Sammi won’t be playing.

As for the back four I would not pick Izzy- he has looked weak defensively in most games I’ve seen him play though in recent times he has though looked good going forward. As for centre back I’d go for Charlie and Kelvin perhaps reluctantly. I cannot see how Efe will be fit and focussed and whilst I like Rogne – and think he’s a better player than KW – he breaks down to often.

I dont think I’ve looked forward to a game more since my dad took me to matches with the likes of Ajax, Ujpest, Basel and Atletico Madrid when I was young. Like many on this blog I wish I was taking my dad – and my mum- to this one

I agree i wouldn’t start with izzy – he seems to get caught out when we go forward – first duty of a fullback is to defend

  10. Have the English media started a campaign to restructure the Epl since there is obviously no competition in it?

Thought not -they probably take the view that the Scottish media did in the 1990s that everything is hunky dory!

    Good luck buf Efe !

I think Sammi will make it ( though I have absolutely NOTHING logical with which to back up my case!).

If he doesn’t make it, I think Charlie will go in there for his height, but also because he hes proved a CL midfielder of some distinction this season. He has played some really good and intelligent games.

I also think if you picked the top 10 dead ball artists currently left in the CL, Charlie would be in there. It’s another string to our bow on Tuesday.

I think we will qualify, but I am not expecting to win on Tuesday.

Wash your mouth out. It is the best league in the world.

Anyone can beat anyone on any given day.

Most exciting with the best players in the world.

Off to watch my DVD of Jim Whites favourite bits.

Very pleased to see that Nikita Jelavic appears to have rediscovered his religion since he left Sevconia.

    …………

    REM words are apt.

    That’s me in the spotlight

    Losing my religion

Trying to keep up with you

And I don’t know if I can do it

Oh no I’ve said too much

    I haven’t said enough

  14. Stringer Bell-Efe would be my choice at CB with Kelvin but looks unlikely.Probably Mulgrew,Rogne might have given Neil food for thought yesterday, dominant and physical with it.

  15. Stringer Bell

I think that Peter Houston said on ESPN yesterday that if Sammi is only 60-70pc fit then Neil will pick him. I think PH is right on that point but thought NFL looked quite gloomy about the big fella’s chances when asked. Could all be psychology I know but like you I don’t think this tie will be anything like over when the game finishes on Tuesday.

As for Charlie I just hope that the first time he steps up to take a corner several fans near me start to moan – trust me we are guaranteed to score!

Read that article regarding Pope Pius and the Jews in Italy during the War. Sadly I expect the letters in next weekends Observer to be filled with letter from correspondents – probably neither Jewish nor Catholic- saying that Pius was a bigger war criminal than Eichmann

  17. 1-0 Nigeria at half time. Sunday Mba goal, great wee player, still playing in Nigeria, wonder if our scouts have been watching him?

The 0-1 defeat at CP in 1969 against a very good Milan side who went on to win it after beating Man Ure in the sf, was hard to take. After drawing the first leg 0-0 and then losing a goal due to a blunder by big Billy, of all people, we bombarded the Milan goal with everything.

Their ‘keeper Fabio Cudicini – Carlo Cudicini’s dad – saved everything that night. Celtic could have score 4 or 5 that night.

    HH!!

Thanks, – of course I’m way too young to have be at the game, up the Celtic end, sitting on a barrier, eating a macaroon bar followed by some spearmint chewing gum.

p.s. and I don’t remember Pierro Prati scoring the only goal either (ツ)
