Celtic is my nation

381

It must seem inconceivable to the younger generation, but those older saw Scotland compete at World Cups in 1974, 78, 82, 86, 90 and 98.  When I turned 35, the only tournaments Scotland had not reached in my lifetime happened when I was 3 and 27.  Wales had never been there (still on a 64 year dry patch) and England missed out in 74, 78 and 94.

Back then, it meant something to me; today, I’m all about the Celtic.  That nationalism thing has gone, Celtic is my nation and the only flag that represents me.  If Scotland lose, it will not move the dial of my mood one degree.

If anything could come close to changing this, it’s a former Scotland captain wanting Ukraine to win at Hampden tonight in the ludicrous belief that would send a message to the Kremlin.  A child-like belief that football support can impact a man who is prepared to kill thousands.

Still, the World Cup is always a great sporting event, the younger generation has been robbed of the meaningful interest many of us had, it is churlish for me to “humbug” at what I once enjoyed.  There’s also Callum McGregor to think about.  He would grace the tournament as the heartbeat of the Scotland side and deserves the chance to perform on the top international stage.

So for the younger generation, Callum, David Turnbull, Greg Taylor and Anthony Ralston, best of luck tonight.  Just don’t ask me to stand for a blue flag.

I don’t think I would have like Steve Clarkes football,it is to similar to Mourinho(stop) football which focuses on stopping your opponents play, stop start play,he does not really make teams that are forward thinking and takes the game to opponents.

His teams will be highly organised, just like Jose and are effective in keeping that organisation, especially if they take lead.thats why he is prob better suited to national team with a few stars and lot of carthorses.

A lot of what ifs but like you ziggy am happy wi Ange

Not splitting the gates — look for the TFOD1.0 angle.

They were spending the money to put in new all seated stands.

Seats brought in more money — did they want to split the money with clubs that were spending zilch?

Not splitting the gate money — reason for the collapse of Scottish football?

To me that dog don’t hunt — the 80’s were good to Scottish football.

Does anyone know when the next Celtic F.C. match is? I’m seriously bored. 😴

  4. Last night we were totally disorganised.

Three in the MF had us chasing shadows.

With a back 5 that were either out of position / suffering from relegation PTSD / recovering from Saturday.

    Horrible at every level.

Plus we were not playing for each other.

CA’s wastefulness / can’t be ersed vibe will become the stuff of legend.

Should be getting an email from Celtic this week to see if I have a season ticket for this year. Hopefully.

AT, “convicted tax avoiding criminal”. That’s a bigger hun cast list than Ben Hur. The South African reprobate?

    Ssssssshhhhhh No1

No I mean Sir Hunner of Pence.

That tax case he won at level 1 went to final appeal court, level 5,and he was found to be a tax avoiding criminal.

    Ssssssshhhhhhh no 2

Jeez you just need to look the Div King in the Eye to know your looking at a criminal.

The South African revenue services looked into those eyes over 500 times, eventually settling to desquintify his gokky criminal speak and call him a criminal 49 times.

  7. Interesting comments about CS on one of the other artcles.

Gives some detail about the job / tasks WGS was given when he arrived in 2005.

Seems to back up the view at the time that WGS was a board friendly manager who was told to cut the wage bill by every means available.

Big change from the old pals act put in place by MON.

Change was needed but WGS was just a yes man for PL / the board.

More a supervisor than a manager.

  15. As limited as Scotland are we lost 2 dreadful schoolboy goals and the McGinn miss was worthy of Van Vossen, Then not putting the keeper under any pressure when he was flapping about like a wet hen.Pathetic. I think Wales will beat them.

  18. JAPAN V PARGUAY…

I watched the whole game, and SAD to say…..

Diazen Maeda came on at half time as a Sub.

He had a SHOCKING 45 minutes of action. the usual work rate was there, BUT He MISSED TWO absolute ” SITTERS” , and another half chance.

His first sitter, was again with his head, when he appeared to CLOSE his eyes ( just like he did against the Huns), and was only a few yards from Goal.

The 2nd ” SITTER” was one of the WORST that I have EVER seen in my life…..

Maeda had the WHOLE EMPTY GOAL in front of him with the Goalie on the ground……..He tried to VOLLEY it HARD with his right foot, when all it required was a simple touch…he sent the Ball about 20 YARDS over the Bar.

He got up holding his head in hands, and looked VERY embarrassed. even the Paraguay Goalie tried to console him by helping him to his feet.

KYOGO came on for the last 8/10 minutes or so…and didnt have a chance to get into the action.

  19. Noticed an image of the Duke of Kent up there on the balcony of Buckingham Palace with Elizabeth R. Fitting indeed for the Grand Master of the United Lodge of England. Adorned with more medals than the last Czar of Russia, a close relation through his father, or would have been had Nicholas II not been given the Order Of Lenin. Still no need to look too far for Royalists, we have more than a few in this very Parish, all notable by their absence today. Has Paul 67 finally been rewarded for services to the Union (not to mention the Board) with his very own OBE? I’ll need to check the latest edition of Burke’s Peerage.

Still no need to look too far for Royalists, we have more than a few in this very Parish, all notable by their absence today. Has Paul 67 finally been rewarded for services to the Union (not to mention the Board) with his very own OBE?

First of all, Paul is absent from the blog on most days and tying his absence into any imagined theme of the day is just simplistic and, frankly, bit of childish reasoning and argument.

Secondly, “Unionists” (of the “it’s a mad idea to have another divorce just after our unsought Euro divorce and in the midst of post-Covid poverty”) are to be dubbed Royalists now, by default. Even though the Independence movement in Scotland has, shamefully, adopted Royalty too (and the currency of the nations it is divorcing from).

Well. I have never worshipped a king or queen, I have never fetishised a flag of any country, and I have never mistaken Nationalism for freedom or any variant of it. Our masters in this world don’t wear crowns and wave at you- they just steal your money – so that 8 men own the same amount of wealth as the poorest half of the world (3.6 billion people). Changing borders affects this not one iota. It is deckchair re-arrangement and deeply, deeply, unconvincing.

I found myself warming to the change of outlook in the SNP recently when Kate Forbes courageously outlined the truth about Scotland’s economics. She did not outline a pursuit of a socialist policy- it was very much a Social Democratic outlook of encouraging “entrepreneurs” and “wealth creators”. If it had come out of the mouth of Keir Starmer, he would have been dubbed a Red Tory. If Anas Sarwar had said this, he would have been told he is talking Scotland down.

But every SNP outlet accepted this 2nd attempt to tell the truth (the first was the White Paper, which was immediately dropped and forgotten about because it’s truth didn’t fit the narrative) as if it was business as usual and not a complete U-turn.

I don’t personally care too much which nation I belong to, or which group of nations I share my sovereignty with, but I care very much about needlessly impoverishing my fellow citizens for the price of a flag and a border.

They have nothing to do with my priorities.
