Celtic-Juve after two previous tight encounters

1074

Celtic will play Juventus in the last 16 round of the Champions League.  Juve are seven points clear top of the Italian league having won the competition last season without losing a game.  They eliminated reigning European champions, Chelsea, in the last round and finished above a good Shakthar team.

They are remarkably well organised and don’t lose many goals (10 in 17 league games, 7 less than anyone else), but this is a tie Celtic can plan for.  Juventus will present the same kind of challenge Barcelona did in the group stage, but they are not as effective as the Catalans.

Celtic have faced them twice in the European Cup/Champions League previously, winning both home games and losing away on each occasions, controversially in 2001.

I’m up for this one. Fairy-tale story with the lovable Celts the only British representatives in the quarter finals? Loins girded.

    Juventus:

I was there in 81, I remember going by Bus from Glasgow, I remember getting into Turin and seeing a couple of Bums on a Moped, they waved down our Bus, Turned out to be a couple of Tims.

We followed them into town and laughed when we seen a grubby hotel with Scaffolding round it ( Guess where we were staying)

Went out that night and found the locals to be friendly, although there were rumours of a bit of aggro from them.

The day of the match was fine until near kick off when the atmosphere chanced notably.

We lost the match, when we got out we ended up apart from the main Celtic Support.

At some point, I got jumped, it was in a very busy street, there were so many of them they were actually kicking themselves.

I was rescued by a brave bloke who waded in and stopped them.

I wandered down the road (Quite unhurt despite the attack) and found a young Celtic Fan lost and frightened, I was 20. I think he was about 15. I manned up, and took him to the buses.

We were on the buses, the windows were getting stoned, and there was a mob attacking anyone who got close enough.

Eventually the Riot Police appeared,Naturally too late to do anything.

When we got to the Ferry to Dover, there was a party of children who appeared to be Thalidomide sufferers.

A Celtic fan started a collection amongst the Bhoys, and a decent sum of money was collected. The next thing The Ships Captain tannoyed his astonishment/delight at this gesture,he had never witnessed anything like it despite carrying many football and rugby fans, Hooliganism was the Norm for him and his crew.

The Woman in charge of the party also tannoyed, she was very emotional.

I have never been as proud to be a Celtic Fan.

On the way off, we sung “Cheerio,Cheerio” to the children, I remember catching the eye of a small child and wondered why he was not waving, when I looked closer the poor wee thing had tiny fingers growing from his shoulder, no wonder I could not see him waving.

It stopped me feeling sorry for myself getting a kicking.

I hope to be posting on here of another great occasion when we play Juventus.

I hope I will not be reading of our support getting attacked, I feel I might get neither.

  2. If our best stay fit, then Celtic Park in Feb. could witness a legendary tanning of some Italian hides.

I think of Izzy & Matthews doing what they’ve been doing so successfully, recently.

I don’t want to rave on, but you all know what I mean. Big Vic, Sammi, Ledley, Commons Mulgrew, Broonie, Wilson, Hooper, Fraser Forster, Tony Watt, McGeough, Lassad and on and on.

Some squad. Ambition, drive, fitness and a love for the club.

Oh aye, and goals goals goals. We’re due a few.

    HH!

What a great post. Thanks for that, uplifting.

Could be on the Xmas 24 movie channel with that ending! :-)

  4. The Guardian has a 100 best footballers feature starting with numbers 100 – 71 listed first.

    At number 81:

    Victor Wanyama

    Age: 21 Nationality: Kenyan

    Team: Celtic

The number 67 is now revered by Celtic fans for two reasons: not only is it the year in which the Lisbon Lions became European champions, it is the shirt number of Victory Wanyama. The £900,000 that the club paid to Belgian side Beerschot last year looks a pittance for a defender-cum-midfielder with awesome power and influence. While he can spread havoc among opposing defenders Wanyama himself remains composed, consistently choosing the right options after marauding into positions to do damage. Just as rivals struggle to contain the Kenyan, Celtic will struggle to hold on to him after performances such as the one he delivered in October’s group stage victory over Barcelona

Great story about being a Celtic supporter. I’m actually choking up a bit. One of my favourite posts of this year. Thanks.

  6. I “looked after” a busload of Juve fans in Athens for the Hamburg game.

Within hours of arriving about about 10 of them were in jail for clearing out a jeweller’s shop.

They were genuinely outraged when it was explained to them that the way out of jail in Greece was a straightforward payment of money. They didn’t have a problem with this per se. What did their heads in was the fact that this was actually Greek law. Legal and above board extortion.

To be fair though quite a few of them were Maltese.

  7. Agree with some posts who have mentioned Juventus and Italian teams in general and their pathological cheating and shall we say gamesmanship . They are the masters at it and have been for generations . Amoroso cheated us out a point the last time we played.

However, Juve gave us a brilliant night in Paris. Remember being there in 1995 for the PSG game and the night before The Old Lady pumped Deidco 4-1 before following that up with a swift 4-0 leathering at Greyscull!

Unfortunately, we lost 1 nil at PSG and 3 nil at Paradise.

To this day that PSG performance is the best from an away team at CP

  8. Juventus like to portray themselves as the most popular club in Italy – this is BS.

The majority of the inhabitants of Turin support Torino – a bit like most Mancs support Man City.

They are not the most popular club in Italy – they are the most hated.

If they were so fantastically well supported why did they build a stadium with a capacity of only 41,000?

    HH!!

  9. Bada….

Spot on mate Socrates younger brother. He couldn’t run but stood in the middle of the park and sprayed unbelievable passes all over the park.

Also remember they had a dynamite striker , think he was nicknamed Loco. He got done for exposing himself. Some player as well though !

  10. Burghbhoy-Didn’t know he was Socrates brother mate, but we couldn’t get near him that night, was in Paris when big Pierre missed a sitter saying the floodlights got in his eyes ??

Slept in the bouncy castle on the ferry home, woke up with about 70 tims sprawled around me!

    Oh happy days!

  14. Burghbhoy-We couldn’t get in to our end as the polis said it was full, got marched round to the Main Stand and sat in with the l’escargot sandwich mob.

STV news showed the Juventus “penalty” tonight. Funny thing is, I felt as blood-boilingly mad as I did when it happened.

It was as if it was happening for the first time, right in front of my eyes.

That ref could teach our MIB’s a thing or two about honest mistakes. To say nothing of how the diver could teach Naismith a thing or two about diving.

The only consolation is that none of the refs in the CL games I’ve watched this season would give a penalty for that. Hope I’m not wrong.

  17. Bada….

Memories of being a travelling Tim , nothing finer than travelling with a batallion of like minded souls with adventure in mind and love of the club in their hearts!

We will be magic at Wembelee , we deserve it mate!

    Hail Hail

  18. All of a sudden, the msm has us a plucky underdog Churchillian fooballing representatives who, though suddenly much admired will get melted by the might of the Juve empire.

  20. Juventus rose as a club when many of the immigrants from the South of Italy took to supporting them. This tendency increased in response to FIAT, a major employer of these people, sponsoring JUVE.

Dislike of the club is linked in part to a strong dislike of Southern Italians, as epitomised by The Northern League.

  21. 4-3!

Juve result at Celtic Park aside – my interest in Italian football stretches back to when the Azzurri defeated West Germany 4-3 in extra time.

Great players such as; Facchetti, Riva, Rivera – Gentile’s man-marking of Maradonna (23 fouls and no booking) – Rossi’s hat-trick – Cabrini etc – all reasons to follow the old CH4 Serie ‘A’ coverage on a Sunday afternoon (25 years ago?).

Never miss the current ESPN weekend coverage – love watching the games, tactics (and histrionics).

The Lions defeated the Cream of Italian Football in ’67 – bhoy what an opportunity for CFC to announce we are really back on the European stage with a victory over 2 legs.

  22. Was it not Nantes who skelped the huns the night before we played PSG, I seem to remember explaining to some French folk why we would support another team rather than Les Eccossais…

Are the FA going to do us all a favour up here, by sending that discrimination action plan to the SFA for immediate implementation via the Scottish Government ….. Perhaps sevco 5 will have taken it on board by the time they gain promotion from SFL 3 (in about 10 years time)

    Sevco 2 / 3 / 4 won’t need to worry about ……..they’ll be liquidated in sequence….
