Celtic-Juve after two previous tight encounters

1074

Celtic will play Juventus in the last 16 round of the Champions League.  Juve are seven points clear top of the Italian league having won the competition last season without losing a game.  They eliminated reigning European champions, Chelsea, in the last round and finished above a good Shakthar team.

They are remarkably well organised and don’t lose many goals (10 in 17 league games, 7 less than anyone else), but this is a tie Celtic can plan for.  Juventus will present the same kind of challenge Barcelona did in the group stage, but they are not as effective as the Catalans.

Celtic have faced them twice in the European Cup/Champions League previously, winning both home games and losing away on each occasions, controversially in 2001.

I’m up for this one. Fairy-tale story with the lovable Celts the only British representatives in the quarter finals? Loins girded.

  3. Off topic but any bhoys from Cape Town on? I’m heading over for 6 months in January and could be doing with some local info.

I’ll also be looking or somewhere to watch the games.

I don’t really fancy just popping my email up but if you make yourself known i will pop it on and then get it removed.

Quite happy with the draw. We can play well enough on our day to get a result against Juve.

    Hail Hail

  4. Think it was Burghyboy mentioned earlier about the 4-1, 04 aggregate game against the previous the the’s, I stayed a stones throw away from iborcs at the time and had a pound on 0-4 for the second leg. 0-3 with a couple of minutes to go and forget who it was cracked in a screamer from about 30 yards to make it 8-1 on aggregate. My sister thought I was mental till I told her I had a 4-0 line on. I am not a gambler, what a bet.

  5. Delighted with the draw.

    We can beat Juventus.

All of the pressure is on them.

I know a few Juve fans and they are worried about their players underestimating us.

Sorry to have read some of the negative experiences of some CQNers. It is true that some of their supporters are a bad lot, but my experience of the city has always been positive.

I enjoyed the Stadio delle Alpi with MON, aside from the cheating diving bassa experience.

And for all you wine buffs from a couple of nights ago, Barbera, Dolcetto d’Alba and Barolo await!

  6. Evening,

Nice to see Juventus saying they will treat the team that beat Barca and eliminated Benfica and Spartak from the competition with ‘respect’.

  8. SPL place Hearts under an indefinite transfer embargo over a failure to make payments to

    players.

Anyone else heard Sevco have asked the players to defer bonus payments until end of summer.

Hearts players have refused similar deal from Romanov.

so, naw luck I will join the wee CQN bevvy on Saturday evening..

  11. Evening all

Sitting here reading the blog and the conflicting emotions aroused by drawing Juve.

I did not travel to Turin on either occasion we played them but remember the disappointment and anger engendered by both games.

As it happens though I have something of a soft spot for Juve – that side which we played in 81 was one of the best I’ve ever seen and when I saw them play Milan in San Siro in 1995 they were if anything even better-Baggio, Vialli, Ravanelli wasn’t a bad forward line and a youngster called Del Piero was on

the bench. I was brought up with the notion that Italian sides were ultra-defensive ( evidence aplenty in the matches I saw us play as a child against Milan and Internazionale ) but the Juventus teams I have seen have been rather more pleasing to watch.

I think we are underdogs and need to get a positive result in the home leg- even my fondness for Juventus and Italy doesn’t blind me to the likelihood that we are likely to be on the receiving end of some questionable honest mistakes. But I think we are capable of doing something – Pirlo and Buffon aside they are short of big game experience and good side though they are they lost to a mediocre Milan side in San Siro recently as well as losing at home to Inter. Juve have a mixed record in the UK – they have had some notable wins but they’ve caved in a few times as well. Ten years ago we finally knocked Liverpool out at the third time of asking (similarly bitter exits in the first two encounters) and I think we are going to do it this time as well.

Sorry for rambling on but it takes my mind off going to the hospital tomorrow.

Thanks for the response. I know that you are an “active” advocate for change – but what chance do you really think there is of either of your two points being implemented without another major altercation or total breakdown in Scottish football?

I can’t see the SFA turkeys voting for Christmas somehow…

  17. 50 shades of green on

anyone hear bfdj call minty a liar tonight.

wee shug said that although Murray will be remembered for many things.

most will remember him selling to saint cragie for a pound and that will be his legacy.

bfdj says he doesnt believe that Murray was duped and that he is far to clever to allow anyone to dupe him let alone wee cragie .

now given that Murray got his succulent lamb brigade in the summer to tell everyone he was duped..bfdj has now called him out on this.

wonder if any of the panel will dig him

    about it?

  18. Jimbo67 – but what is a positive result at home?

I think like many I’d be happy with 0-0.

Hope the hospital goes ok bud.

  19. Blantyretim.

I had a visit from Johann Murdoch today,I knew he was coming and kept looking out the window for his arrival,My cleaner was in and when she heard me swearing she asked what was wrong, there was Johann overloaded with presents I thought Santa Claus had arrived early at my door.Anyway.

Thanks for your thoughtful gifts,I know you were involved in the Pressies, but Johann would choose the port, a beautiful tasting vintage port,I would know that as I am what you would call a rechereche,(could be the wrong word, but too lazy to look it up?).

I’m putting it down in my must have next time I put in a wine order from Portugal.

Also a beatiful wine decanter and six crystal glasses, and a green t/shirt with the Lisbon Lions on the front,(can’t wear that on Saturday).I shall have to reciprocate in someway.

This post shouldn’t be on this blog but I thought it deserved a mention, there are good Celtic supporters out there.

  20. Weefra,

Tyrone must be saved from his life of hell. We must do something,it can’t go on.

I think not conceding is essential and wouldn’t consider a goal less draw as being fatal either. But a wee one niller would be better.
