Celtic-Juve after two previous tight encounters

1074

Celtic will play Juventus in the last 16 round of the Champions League.  Juve are seven points clear top of the Italian league having won the competition last season without losing a game.  They eliminated reigning European champions, Chelsea, in the last round and finished above a good Shakthar team.

They are remarkably well organised and don’t lose many goals (10 in 17 league games, 7 less than anyone else), but this is a tie Celtic can plan for.  Juventus will present the same kind of challenge Barcelona did in the group stage, but they are not as effective as the Catalans.

Celtic have faced them twice in the European Cup/Champions League previously, winning both home games and losing away on each occasions, controversially in 2001.

I’m up for this one. Fairy-tale story with the lovable Celts the only British representatives in the quarter finals? Loins girded.

  1. PSG announce a €150m p.a. deal with the Qatar Tourist Authority. This is not a sponsorship deal thereby it circumvents the FFP rule and will allow PSG to break even on an annual basis for the next few years whilst also continuing to spend vast sums on players

  2. sftb,

If we had been drawn first from the non-seeds the chance of us then drawing Juventus was 1 in 7.

But to look at the total probability of us drawing Juventus at any time in the draw we would have to work out every possible combination of teams that was allowed and divide the number that paired us with Juve by that total.

Because of the other combinations not allowed we would find that the probability of a draw with us v Juve was greater than 1 in 7.

“Because of the other combinations not allowed we would find that the probability of a draw with us v Juve was greater than 1 in 7.”

That is where the language becomes important. I ceded the point that a Juve:Celtic tie was a 1 in 6 probability i.e. 5 to 1.

However, I still assert that the chances of Celtic drawing Juve (which IS a different calculation than estimating the chances of there being a Celtic:Juve tie among the 8 ties drawn) remains at 1 in 7 or 6 to 1.

It is a semantic distinction but an important one in calculating odds.

Thanks. My brother called me and advised that you had posted around 8am. I guess he anticipated that I might be drafting my own email. I expected a wee bit more accuracy from the FT not just repetition of the spin from Charlie’s handlers.

I can understand disappointment at the price, but what bonuses are players on to get a result and how else will they be paid without reducing the standard of player Celtic can sign?

Football club Boards, all of them, are caught between a rock (the support) and a hard place (the players) with the rock cheering the hard place on.

That is bad enough but if the hard place fail to deliver commensurate with the wages they demand, apart from being booed when they lose, its the Boards that get the blame not the rock or the hard place.

  9. Don’t care what the odds were to draw Juve, but would love to do the 7-1, 6-1, 5-1 well you get where am going.

Can you elaborate please I struggle to grasp the nature of share dealings.

Are you saying there is now glut of shares to be sold meaning price will drop as in too many hooses for sale and not enough buyers? I’d be lost without analogies.

I know have been involved in some way with Celtics international season ticket initiative (a fantastic idea BTW)…do you know if any type of preference is given to these ticket holders for CL games?

I know I can look around the Celtic site but maybe you have a quick answer.

I should say that I do not have one of these STs but plan on getting one for next season.

The fact that the Celtic Board are not prepared to rule out a joint sponsorship deal with the huns speaks volumes.

Only my second post but just wanted to ask if anybody has any advise on trains/busses in Northern Italy? A few of us have got flights to Pisa the day before the game and from Verona to Dublin the day after so I assume travelling by train would be the best option? Would be good to get a few hours in Pisa for a bit of culture!!

A wee bit concerned at some of the bad experiences some of the CQN’ers have had there before but if we keep our heads screwed on I think we should be fine.

  14. It will take some time before the markets settle and we get anything like a true value of a Sevco Share. I believe Cenko is just creating a market and its basically the same people trading shares to try and create a value. In one sense it doesn’t matter to the Club what value the share price is, they have raised what they have raised and its just individuals who have bought shares will either gain or lose from future transactions. I don’t for one minute believe Charlies rantings about a 30million war chest. Its almost certain they were in debt prior to share isssue, probably got in 21.5 mill net of expenses (that is if all these institutional purchases were genuine & not original cabal members turning Loans into equity. In his own Prospectus he admits Sevco will lose 2 or 3 million this year. My guess is that he is factoring in next years season book sales. These will come in before this years Accounts close. If he has 10 million left by then and sells 40,000 books at 500 to bring in 20 million (wildly optimistic) then he could in theory end the year with 30 million in the Bank. However he will have a net spend of 20 million for the rest of next years season so his real warchest will be circa 10 million and t’will cost him that to do the renovations that Castle Greyskull needs.

Reality must really be hitting home with the sevcodgers. McCoist, with the aid of chuckles hand up his khyber, will be doing the soundbites as usual, telling his flock that life is just wonderful and all is well in their newco-but-oldco-when-it-suits world. However he knows that we know that he’s really doing it though gritted teeth as he keeps getting images of the Big Cup flashing through his mind (and with our name on it).

We are one tie away from the last 8 and probably another 5-7 (?) mill to go with it, not to mention the extra kudos.

The huns might not say it but they will be thinking to themselves tonight… ‘how the hell did we get here’…..’while they go on about havin a party in the Champions league’.

Not really;) I grew up in a Glasgow where there were racist signs displayed which prevented my own people from applying for certain jobs and homes. My grandfather had to pay a backhander, according to family folklore, to encourage a council worker to process his housing application when he reached the top of the list. I deplore racism and always challenge it, in private and in public. I don’t like bullies either!

Citibhoy is probably better placed to answer this but today’s trading volume was over 214,000 shares of which 10 (yes ten) were bought. Everything else was people selling.

This is only possible because Cenkos as Market Makes are buying those shares in order to create a market. At some point these need to be sold and that’s when the price should start to fall, to the point where people are happy to buy again. Which the clearly aren’t doing right now.

I can’t see the price ever falling to a point where Charles Green doesn’t make a remarkable profit on his £50k purchase of 5M shares (currently worth c£3.5M). Despite the fact he can’t sell for at least 12 months.

    Boring share talk

Judging by today’s action whereby around £170k of RFC (that’s the official ticker) shares have been sold and about £7.70 bought, which has seen the price on the day rise, they will plummet like a stone once Cenkos have fulfilled their duties.

    A couple of questions.

    Who are Cenkos?

As has been pointed out before, there has to be a buyer if someone wants to sell. So who is buying and selling the shares?

I will land at PIK airport at c0920 on Sunday 23/12/12 – if the world does not end tomorrow – after an overnight stay at Dublin Airport: a hotel at the airport, I should add, as oppossed to dossing down in the terminal building! Heading back on the 18th January – my daughter turns 18 on the 14th. Going to cost me a bloody fortune – but who cares: tis great to be a Tim. BMCUW will be coming up shortly after the New Year – so our paths should cross. Met him for a wee swally when I was over in October. If it can be arranged very much look forward to meeting you too.

  25. ScotPatsFan – 17:13 on 20 December, 2012

Ok my understanding is a bit on the limited side but Cenkos Securities Plc set up the admission of Rangers International Football Club onto the Alternative Investments Market (AIM).

Part of this process involves Cenkos acting as a Market Maker. They have a pool of money (provided from the £22M raised) that is used to buy shares if nobody else wants to, and maintain a stable price for a period after launch. Once that pool of money is exhausted the price is set buy the market. If people are trying to sell with no buyers, the price should fall until buying starts.

Given how lopsided the market has been in the first two days, I suspect the drop will be far and fast. I don’t see there market cap being above Celtic’s in the future.

  26. Auldheid
