Celtic-Juve after two previous tight encounters

1074

Celtic will play Juventus in the last 16 round of the Champions League.  Juve are seven points clear top of the Italian league having won the competition last season without losing a game.  They eliminated reigning European champions, Chelsea, in the last round and finished above a good Shakthar team.

They are remarkably well organised and don’t lose many goals (10 in 17 league games, 7 less than anyone else), but this is a tie Celtic can plan for.  Juventus will present the same kind of challenge Barcelona did in the group stage, but they are not as effective as the Catalans.

Celtic have faced them twice in the European Cup/Champions League previously, winning both home games and losing away on each occasions, controversially in 2001.

I’m up for this one. Fairy-tale story with the lovable Celts the only British representatives in the quarter finals? Loins girded.

  1. My daughter text me at work today to let me no a package had arrived.

Good i thought must be the cqn annual I’ll read it when i get home.

No chance I’ve not to get it until Christmas day.

Twisted kids I’ve brought up :-((

  2. what a weird game fitba is – I’m a bit nervous about Ross county but thenk we could make the next round of the CL

  3. Here’s my 2p.’s worth : Juve are a bent team, used to operating in a bent environment. Like all Italian teams I’ve ever seen, no matter what footballing talent they possess, and it can be a lot, they tend to ponce about like they were in a Verdi opera and dive tragically at every opportunity, foul like lunatics and then protest innocence like virginal ballerinas.

Pirlo, a contemporary of oor Neil, with his much vaunted midfield nous, is ageing, in footballing terms and will be no match for Big Vic W.

They may have this player or that, but they will not be as clued up about us as they think they are becaus subconsciously they will buy into all the rubbish spouted about how we are just not in the same league, blah blah blah.

I believe we can run rings around them, and I believe our pace will terrorise them.

I am not naïve, but I believe in our team, I believe in our management and his staff.

    I’m a believer…..what kind of Celtic mhan would I be if I wasn’t?

I’m sure that in the run-up to our Italian encounter there will be many hunbelievers popping up to try to sap our confidence. No chance.

We will prevail, and we will progress.

    COYBIG!

  4. Valentine’s Day –

shouldn’t you be giving it’s anticipated proper title, the AshleySportsDirectArena?

  5. Looks like best airport for Turin would be Malpensa Milan.

    From Milan Malpensa Airport

Malpensa is halfway between Milano and Torino. If you arrive at Malpensa, the best way to reach Torino is by bus. The bus operators ‘Sadem’ and ‘Autostradale’ run a shuttle service from Milan Malpensa Airport (one-way ticket €18), which takes 2 hours to arrive to Porta Susa railway station. Transport service is subjected to compulsory reservation. The ticket can be bought trough credit card from the website http://www.sadem.it.

Can get Manchester return flights for £150. Mmmmm

Just heard that Hearts have been given an indefinite ban on signing players. Assuming that they are not in administration, anybody any idea what’s behind it? The SFA are not cracking down on clubs stiffing their creditors are they?

  9. Celtic send best wishes to Tito Vilanova

By: Paul Cuddihy on 19 Dec, 2012 22:43

EVERYONE at Celtic would like to send their thoughts and prayers to Barcelona manager, Tito Vilanova, after the announcement that he is to undergo surgery and treatment following a relapse of cancer in the parotid saliva gland.

The 44-year-old had a tumour removed from his throat last November when he was the Barcelona assistant manager, but during a recent medical check-up, it was found that the cancer had returned. He will undergo surgery this Thursday.

Tito Vilanova took over as Barca boss from Pep Guardiola in April, and his team have enjoyed one of their best starts to the season. They currently lead the Spanish League by nine points, while they’ve also qualified for the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League. During the group stages of the campaign, they played Celtic, winning 2-1 in the Nou Camp, but losing 2-1 at Celtic Park.

Celtic manager Neil Lennon said: “This is very sad news and we send our sincere best wishes to Tito and his family. Clearly events such as this put football firmly in perspective – we have enjoyed two great games against Tito´s team so recently and to hear such news is a real shock.

“I know his players and fans will give him every support at this very difficult time and my backroom team and players offer Tito the same support.”

Celtic Chief Executive Peter Lawwell said: “This news has obviously stunned everyone, and our thoughts are, first and foremost, with Tito and his family at this time.

“The relationship we have with Barcelona is a strong one, and those bonds were only strengthened when we played Barcelona recently in the Champions League. Both in victory and defeat, Tito and his players were gracious, both towards our team and also our supporters after the game here at Celtic Park.

“Barcelona remain a team to be admired by anyone who enjoys watching football. Tito, himself, is a man of quiet dignity, and he has already proved to be a manager of considerable ability.

“Everyone at Celtic would like to send our thoughts and best wishes to Tito and also to our friends at FC Barcelona, whom I know will give him and his family every support.”

  10. Miki67.

Liked a lot of your points.

My biggest worry is their theatrics when challenged that along with compliant referees could hinder us.

Hopefully lennys young lions will be streetwise enough to rise above it and carry us through to the last eight.hh

  11. I think we are indeed streetwise; NFL has the most streetwise nous on and off rhe park of any football manager I can think of.

Most telling move? 1-0 v Barça and he brings ON Tony Watt.

    Game, set, match.

I hold the same views about Italian football as you do. They are pathological cheats. I was outraged at the penalty given to Juve in our last meeting.

I was absolutely fuming that the Italians were allowed into the 2006 World Cup let alone win the darn thing after the match fixing/bribery scandal that went all the way to the top. As we all know Juventus were the primary beneficiaries in that fiasco.

I used to have a soft spot for Juve…not any more. In fact, I would have preferred Real, Man U or Bayern Munich ahead of the Italian trash.

I do not believe we will get any decisions during the away leg, in fact I believe it will be impossible for us to win there…we will not be allowed to no matter how well we play.

I should clarify that my distaste is for Italian football not for the Italian people or nation. I have a lot of time for them, in fact, and would love to visit Italy at some stage…but not for this game.

    Hail Hail

  13. Does anyone know what the ticket situation will be for the Turin leg……. I live in Sicily so its cheap to fly to Turin but I understand the ground only holds 40k

  14. I like the Italians (not just because of Peroni) .

We have bigger cheats closer to home who are still unpunished .

I’m meeting TALLYBHOY in Troon ,probably the 10th or 15th Jan,in the evening.

Last time we met up was rather pleasant,it took about six pints the next morning before “the cure” kicked in!

Welcome to join us,I would expect another evening of conviviality and drunken ramblings…

  16. Auldheid, TBB, Barcabhoy, BRT& H, & many, many others.

Excuse my sad old memory. There are so many others whose contributions have kept me & others informed. I thank all of them for their knowledge & generosity. You have been magnificent.

You have blessed us with an inside look at the sometimes obscure & esoteric inside track on our wee, sometimes depressing, West of Scotland gold-fish bowl.

    Take a bow.

    We are in your debt.

  17. Kilbowie Kelt

I agree, though I’m not so sure The Battered Bunnet has brought much to the table.

    Hail hail :O)

  18. Celtic Mac

Hearts have paid their players for this month but not included any bonus money due. Hearts asked the players to defer any bonuses until seasons end but the players refused. Their signing ban was due to be lifted on Dec 23rd providing all monies owed to players were paid, hence the indefinite ban issued today for failing to fulfill this promise

  19. voguepunter

I like them too (and their Chianti) , I just despise their football. As Miki67 said, they have wonderful talented players but they prefer to dazzle us with their cheating and diving instead of their footballing prowess.

I think the similarities between Juve and the Hun are remarkable but unsurprising. The SFA and refs are of the same mold as their Italian counterparts also.

    Hail Hail

  20. Paul67 etal.

Why wouldn’t Comet,or any other company for that matter not follow the Rangers lead, Administration, then Liquidation.

I think that Comet has the bigger debt, but Green has shown them the way, they should go into Administration, then Liquidation, have a new share issue, bob’s your uncle your back in business.

I’m surprised that Celtic hasn’t followed the Rangers lead and Liquidated, and come back minus the £6million debt they have,Hearts also,The Rangers has shown the way to go about it.

  22. Last 16 draw, Juventus , fancy that strongly , difficult task but absolutely one I’m convinced we can progress from.

Was at the game when Murdo scored in 1980 or so as a wee bhoy when Liam Brady played for Juve. Think good part of that team won the World Cup in Spain 2 years later.

Also remember the pictures from the away leg in the view of slashings and wrecked Celtic supporters buses.

Anyone planning on going to the away leg be on your guard!

I was thinking of taking Burghbhoy junior to away leg but I will wait for the quarters.

    Hail hail….. Wembelee, Wembelee!

  23. Reading the blog and some of the Ghuys talking about the games v Juve in 2001 brought back a few memories. I went back to CP for the 4-3 game. What a night. I remember the 1st game and trying to watch it on my computer in Germany through a 56 BPS dial-up modem connection, whilst listening to the radio LOL. If the whole game was actually transmitted at the speed it was I would still be waiting to watch the second half today! How things have changed in a relatively short time. Are all guys named Amoruso cheating bassas/ wixxers?

Juve could save themselves some money and ask UEFA for a dispensation to allow Scottish officials to referee both ties, only a thought.

Hail! Hail! PMTYH, who is still trying to decide home or away.

  24. voguepunter

    LOL…I was waiting for that!

At least the Italians cheat for noble reasons like money, unlike the SFA and Scottish referees who cheat because they are racist, sectarian lowlifes. :)

    Hail Hail
