Celtic League of Nations

937

It is worth more than a passing observation that in yesterday’s game Celtic had players from 11 different countries in the starting line-up:

England, Sweden, Honduras, Scotland, Nigeria, Netherlands, Finland, Israel, Ireland, Greece and Wales.

Recruitment came from clubs in 7 different league structures:

England (3) and Wales, Scotland, Norway, Honduras, Israel (2), Netherlands and Germany.

There were a further four different nationalities on the bench.

Of the starting line-up only Fraser Forster is not a full international, although that is surely only a matter of time, but Fraser is the only player we have from a large football nation, perhaps an indication that it is more difficult to recruit nationals from England, Germany, Italy, France and Spain than elsewhere.

The signing of Emilio Izaguirre from Honduras three years ago came two years after the player’s representatives had him on trial in England.  It’s likely Emilio’s CV was in every mailbox in the British game, so I doubt we have much of an infrastructure in Central America.

Celtic have obviously matured links in Israel recently, Beram Kayal and Efe Ambrose have delivered value, while Nir Biton fits the profile of the player Celtic should be looking for.  Embedding relationships in similar markets offers a higher likelihood of value – and therefore football development – than taking our chance on the mainstream British and European circuits.

Prize to anyone who can point to Guinea-Bissau (Amido Balde’s country of birth and location of a Sporting Lisbon-associate club) on the map. There is a lot of work to do to catch up with the Portuguese.

  3. Evening/Morning etc,

    A question for our American posters…. (Aussie’s are barred cos you’ll change the shape of the ball :-))).

    There was a discussion tonight (I was not involved) about the amount of time wasted when the ball goes out of play. Could we change the rules – as in the NFL – the game automatically stops.

    How could the Scottish game incorporate the American version – maybe not the adverts at first?

    Before anyone mentions the weather – Think Green Bay, Minnesota etc., or we could move to the Summer (I know, I know).

    I understand games could last over 3 hours (Money’s worth?) but – How much is it to attend an NFL game – I honestly don’t know – is it worth it? This is where the Americans usually excel.

    Maybe our American posters could expand?

  4. Dram, the guitar. Badly.

    Time for sleep. Don’t you just adore Celtic FC? You do? Start calling her stadium Celtic Park then. Parkhead doesn’t sound as evocative. Night all.

    I’ll use all my shares to vote against the resolution because:

    I don’t believe the proposal is designed to out the SFA. There are better ways to do so;

    I believe the main proponents are anti-celtic board. I have even read them on cqn blaming the board for not taking seriously their duties under health and safety legislation following Adam Mathew’s injury and the “rugby” tactics employed by Hibs;

    I do not want to be associated with the resolution proponents or the gang that follows them because I think they are anti-celtic;

    I think there is a bullying clique involved and they won’t intimidate me;

    I think the proponents are attempting to suggest those against the resolution cannot be Celtic supporters. That is a pathetic proposal from the likes of PFayr whose technique actually undermines the resolution;

    My belief is that the people proposing the resolution are of a low intellectual calibre;

    I think they employ bullying tactics;

    I don’t think the CFCB is the correct authority to appeal to. They didn’t exist when the licencing issue arose. How far back should the CFCB look at cases?

    These are some of the reasons I will use all my shares to vote against the resolution.

    Happy for others to use their shares for the resolution.

    I also believe that a tiny percentage of folk who go to Celtic matches, or support us, read cqn. Of those who do, only a small percentage are shareholders and have votes at the agm. I don’t think what we have read on cqn in recent months represents the shareholders or supporters views. I might be very wrong. I will find out soon enough. Either way I will be at the games supporting the team. I’m not sure the proponents will be.

    Was listening to Talksport the other day and Joe Montana was on and he mentioned one of the Superbowls had a 20 odd minute time-out for a paid for advert (think it’s better now, probably costs more?).

    As someone who has defended the board here in the past, and therefore not what you might class as a “board-hater”, I find that post bizarre.

    The only bullying I’ve witnessed all summer has come from those dismissing the resolution or attacking anyone who has pulled the Celtic board up for questioning.

    Again you are conflating the board hating issue with the resolution which should have nothing to do with anyone’s position on the Celtic Board.

    And your comment “My belief is that the people proposing the resolution are of a low intellectual calibre” I find the most ironic.

    Those who have shared your opinion on this issue are the ones I’d say strike me as suffering from that affliction.

    I’ve questioned the board here over the past 2 years, and have not seen any intellectual argument come from rabid “board-lovers”, just insult, followed by a cry of “poor me, you are bullying me” as soon as they are met with a reply.

    But I accept your point that you choose not to support the Resolution because of those involved, ie Auldheid, Morrisey the 23rd and Canamalar.

    I think you’re very wrong on a number of issues, hence my reply.

    Yours faithfully, from a middle-roader.

    After tonight’s game the circus moves to Boston for games 6 and 7 (if necessary) on Wednesday and Thursday evenings.

    I’m interested ffm in your view. Can you provide examples of this bullying. I probably missed it not being on here all the time, but I’m open to persuasion.

    You think I’m wrong on a number of points. Will you expand? What about CFCB not existing when the licence issue arose. Do you have a view on that? Will you address all my points?

    On the intellectual calibre issue, do you need me to expand? Did you read Canamalar’s initial draft? When I first saw it I thought it was the work of an illiterate. It was improved beyond recognition when others “fixed’ it.

    Did you read Canamalar’s claim that the board had rewritten “his” resolution? CQN was going mental. How dare the board? How dare Peter Lawwell? It turned out Canamalar hadn’t read the agm pack. He apologised.

    Canamalar was then banned from CQN, though his buddies made us aware that he didn’t know why. A campaign built up. P67 was to blame. PL had ensured P67 gagged him.

    Turned out he’d been barred temporarily until he agreed not to breach the blog rulesbhaving abused another poster. He came on and apologised – sorry it was his spam filter.

    Michael

    Reading your reasons for opposing the resolution I am shaking my head in bewilderment.

    Correct me if I am wrong but as I read it, the reasons are mainly based on your poor opinion of the proposer and his supporters.

    NOT on the merits of the proposals.

    I have never met any of these guys personally and am not in a position to establish their bona fides, but to dismiss them as having low intellectual capacity says more about yourself than it does about them.

    If you wish to argue against the proposal please post genuine arguments.

  19. gg @ 01:46 on 29 October, 2013

    I like to take as much as I can into account whenever I cast a vote. People involved, Proposal, Circumstances, etc.

    You vote for the proposal if you want. Is that what you will do?

    Do you see any circumstances where not taking a broader viewpoint would be dangerous?

  20. A bit late in the day to be posting, but, caught a bit of SSB tonight. Nearly crashed the taxi, when I heard BFDJ and DL? mention a comment from Jandy Sardine. He said, “thems” need men with “integrity and standards!”

    They certainly dont do irony do they?

    Also, have the huns not cottoned on to the fact, that Murray is another one calling the shots, and hoping to join the board,without putting any money in?

    Hell slap it intae them!

    “I’m interested ffm in your view. Can you provide examples of this bullying. I probably missed it not being on here all the time, but I’m open to persuasion.”

    Michael, I’d rather not. I don’t want to single out posters and create more division, which in my opinion is the aim of the very people I’m referring to. And having to trail through some stuff (I actually did record some of it, but deleted it a few a weeks ago when it seemed to be dissipating) is something that will leave me utterly depressed. Let’s call it my view, and you have yours on this. Anyone reading can make their own minds up like you and me have done, on who was the bully and who was being bullied.

    —-

    “You think I’m wrong on a number of points. Will you expand? What about CFCB not existing when the licence issue arose. Do you have a view on that? Will you address all my points?”

    If you clarify what CFCB is, I’ll respond to that point. I’ll address any points. I have no agenda, and am speaking from the heart. Regarding all your points, I did expand. I did not just say I disagreed, and then left it that, which seems to be a serious affliction affecting those who seem over-keen to defend the Celtic Board. Feel free to single out a point and I’ll address it again.

    —-

    “On the intellectual calibre issue, do you need me to expand? Did you read Canamalar’s initial draft? When I first saw it I thought it was the work of an illiterate. It was improved beyond recognition when others “fixed’ it.”

    I hold Canamalar in the highest esteem purely because of two things – his intellectual ability, and his passion for truth. Some are easily offended by it, some don’t get it. A shame, but you can only lead a horse to water That you choose to highlight typos and other petty issues is disappointing. Did you ever compose a work of more than 5000 words? If so, did you have it proof read? The English language is also in a bit of turmoil. It has to meet text speak, new internet vernacular and traditional grammar. I could point you to grammatical errors in every single Celtic statement released in the past few years. But I understand why this is an irrelevant argument now, and has NOTHING to do with sincerity or intelligence.

    —–

    “Did you read Canamalar’s claim that the board had rewritten “his” resolution? CQN was going mental. How dare the board? How dare Peter Lawwell? It turned out Canamalar hadn’t read the agm pack. He apologised.”

    “Canamalar was then banned from CQN, though his buddies made us aware that he didn’t know why. A campaign built up. P67 was to blame. PL had ensured P67 gagged him. ”

    A campaign? I saw some questions asked, and one theory put forward by Awe Naw, which is still perfectly feasible, and was in no way critical of P67 or the Celtic Board, so this is another argument that just doesn’t hold. Can you provide evidence of this campaign that claimed P67 was to blame??? This is a crucial point.

    He apologised. So to use it as an issue now is not only disingenuous but insulting to anyone who wants to form an independent opinion. And there is still the issue that the main point of the resolution was hidden in the small print, which you don’t seem so bothered about?

    —-

    To conclude, Michael, I’m glad to be discussing these issues with yourself.
