Celtic League of Nations

937

It is worth more than a passing observation that in yesterday’s game Celtic had players from 11 different countries in the starting line-up:

England, Sweden, Honduras, Scotland, Nigeria, Netherlands, Finland, Israel, Ireland, Greece and Wales.

Recruitment came from clubs in 7 different league structures:

England (3) and Wales, Scotland, Norway, Honduras, Israel (2), Netherlands and Germany.

There were a further four different nationalities on the bench.

Of the starting line-up only Fraser Forster is not a full international, although that is surely only a matter of time, but Fraser is the only player we have from a large football nation, perhaps an indication that it is more difficult to recruit nationals from England, Germany, Italy, France and Spain than elsewhere.

The signing of Emilio Izaguirre from Honduras three years ago came two years after the player’s representatives had him on trial in England.  It’s likely Emilio’s CV was in every mailbox in the British game, so I doubt we have much of an infrastructure in Central America.

Celtic have obviously matured links in Israel recently, Beram Kayal and Efe Ambrose have delivered value, while Nir Biton fits the profile of the player Celtic should be looking for.  Embedding relationships in similar markets offers a higher likelihood of value – and therefore football development – than taking our chance on the mainstream British and European circuits.

Prize to anyone who can point to Guinea-Bissau (Amido Balde’s country of birth and location of a Sporting Lisbon-associate club) on the map. There is a lot of work to do to catch up with the Portuguese.

  1. Oglah,

Were you the poster talking about ‘real’ music. What conservatism. Why can people not tolerate young, teenage girls enjoying manufactured pop groups? Should they really be forced to listen to Butthole Surfers in order to appease music purists? Usually the music fans berating pop music are Verve or Manic Street Preachers fans. Good grief. Nevertheless, dullards such as Verve make people happy. Therefore such groups have purpose. Wonderful. Let people enjoy what music they want to.

  2. I like music but surely a singer shouldnt given as higher status as a top footballer for instance. Just for singing or playing music. It seems quite a feeble way to spent a life.

  3. Sid,

Glad you raised the continuing issue of disgraceful refereeing.

No improvemement since the failed hun rescue campaign.

Looks like Dallas won the war if you ask me, and not us. A cushy number at UEFA, and no change back here.

But it seems the whole game is corrupt. Having been to see a few games dan sarf, it’s clear brown envelopes are in play in my opinion. UEFA CL games are proving not much better.

How many of knew we would draw Juve last season, and also said in the same breath that cheating would be the undoing of us. Sadly, more time was spent here discussing Efe’s responsibility for the lost goal being the game changer rather than Juve’s cheating being the game-changer.

Not really surprised at that though – in 2010 the discussions raged on every week here with the camp divisions being built around those who could see the cheating from the huns and Dallas’ cronies, and those who dismissed such notions as paranioa.

  5. Just finished the CQN Annual and sent it to the printers. We got a last minute request to include a four page feature by Phil MacGiollaBhain so we will sort that tomorrow. Organising our wee interview for later in the week – should be fun.

On the subject of the resolution – the guys on this blog did a marvellous job. Baton passed to the likes of Auldheid and BRTH and suddenly after months of silence the SFA boss turns up on the radio. Coincidence? Now what he said to those with a real grasp of the matter is significant. We all want the same objective – anyone from the Celtic side of things anyway from the Board to the supporters on the blog. My advice is sit back and enjoy the show.

Everyone on my famous list has had their names added to the CQN Annual Roll of Honour.

  6. Drambowie, what is yours? I am a fanatical music lover. Rough Trade was a great label. However its flaw was its intolerant PC ideas which sought to censor radical bands. Thankfully Mark E Smith refused to be bullied by the censoring liberals. What closed minds some at RT had. Yet they had great ears!

Recent listening has included Pixies ‘Surfer Rosa’, a Tropicalia compilation and a whole lot of Smokey Robinson. Classical music also. You?

  7. Singing D,

It is a cliché to hate The Daily Mail. Actually the sports coverage is excellent. They challenge secret courts and other aspects of the state. They have done some fine work in highlighting the lack of dignity afforded to our elderly. However I detest their use of the word ‘flooding’ in relation to immigration. May they continue to expose the disgusting excesses of the corrupt BBC. They also give fair coverage to Celtic.

  9. Listening to the great Czech composer Smetana during a bus trip through snowy Estonia is recommended. Thanks to the power of music, I can see Estonia now in all its wintery glory. Any classical music admirers out there?

  10. Kojo, young Fisher came from a youth team with Celtic in its name.

Thanks to Summer of Sammi for the articles about Celtic v Leeds. I discussed them with a Chelsea fan whom I encountered through work this evening. Lovely guy. Time to re-evaluate my impression of Chelsea fans. Old Firm is dead afterall.

  15. Petec, I am honoured that a CQN legend posts to me! Excellent footage. The fish was especially entrancing.

Drambowie, unfortunately I lack knowledge about composers. Being working class, it was not the done thing to like such music in my youth.

  16. greenyinfurrafenian on

always been partial to a string quartet. tho i find a bit of skanking rude boy ska hard to beat.

  17. Nah, I don’t like the word Singing D. I work with immigrants. They work hard. Contrast that with some of the locals.

Billy Bragg sung a beautiful song called ‘Deportees’. For some reason I recall it now.

  18. Dram,

Pieces from Smetana, Satie and Chopin are some of the most moving musical compositions that I have heard. Unfortunately I could not discern what style of classical music they are! Ask me about experimental music and I am more knowledgeable. You know you want to!

  19. @John Ha Ha I want to, you are so open

do you play an instrument? do you know what its like to connect?

dandy livingstons original version was very good but the specials nailed it.

amy whitehouse covered it well too

  21. What I don’t like is that so many so called indie bands have adopted Celtic as their team. Such people can be condescending to Celtic. They feel we are still the rebel underdogs. I exempt Eugene Kelly who is an authentic Tim.
