Celtic League of Nations

937

It is worth more than a passing observation that in yesterday’s game Celtic had players from 11 different countries in the starting line-up:

England, Sweden, Honduras, Scotland, Nigeria, Netherlands, Finland, Israel, Ireland, Greece and Wales.

Recruitment came from clubs in 7 different league structures:

England (3) and Wales, Scotland, Norway, Honduras, Israel (2), Netherlands and Germany.

There were a further four different nationalities on the bench.

Of the starting line-up only Fraser Forster is not a full international, although that is surely only a matter of time, but Fraser is the only player we have from a large football nation, perhaps an indication that it is more difficult to recruit nationals from England, Germany, Italy, France and Spain than elsewhere.

The signing of Emilio Izaguirre from Honduras three years ago came two years after the player’s representatives had him on trial in England.  It’s likely Emilio’s CV was in every mailbox in the British game, so I doubt we have much of an infrastructure in Central America.

Celtic have obviously matured links in Israel recently, Beram Kayal and Efe Ambrose have delivered value, while Nir Biton fits the profile of the player Celtic should be looking for.  Embedding relationships in similar markets offers a higher likelihood of value – and therefore football development – than taking our chance on the mainstream British and European circuits.

Prize to anyone who can point to Guinea-Bissau (Amido Balde’s country of birth and location of a Sporting Lisbon-associate club) on the map. There is a lot of work to do to catch up with the Portuguese.

  1. TinyTim @ 11:09,

To my way of thinking Newco are drinking in the last chance saloon – actually it’s their local but let’s put that aside.

If Dave King can establish a working relationship with Mr Mac Coll and their consortium work with the RIFC PLC, shareholders and shadow investors*, they have a fighting chance.

    Otherwise the games-a-bogey.

They Will not last till the AGM.

I can’t see how they could possibly go for another share issue.

If they do fix things up then short of a massive cash injection they Will be playing in a much harder league with less resources next Season, they may well be finding their level for a good few years.

*Did Paul Murray find out who these investors were?

    Hail Hail

  2. I see we have been linked with a few players already….

This is the last day to sign public petition PE01491.

It’s only about 125 short of the 3,000 mark so a big thank you to all who have supported me and a special thank you to Paul67 who has put up with me disrupting the flow of Celtic debate on his site.

I could even be said to have “diverted the discourse” at times. Anyway for maybe the last time here is the link: http://www.scottish.parliament.uk/GettingInvolved/Petitions/judgesmasonregister

But then again maybe not the last time as I might be chapping your doors tonight if the numbers are in the 2,900’s.

A newspaper fit for a King

Posted by Phil Mac Giolla Bhain

I wrote here only a few days ago that “journalism without precision isn’t  really worth the effort”.

It would appear that the folks at the Daily Record weren’t paying attention.

From the Daily Record, the newspaper that gave us, “Craig Whyte, multi billionaire with wealth off the radar” more bunkum as the late Jimmy Sanderson would have said.

Today’s exclusive by John Ferguson claims: “Dave King gets the all-clear from the Stock Exchange to return to Ibrox.”

The article goes on to quote a spokesman for Aim as saying:

“I had a look in the reports and there were these issues in South Africa, the other thing was that he had been on the board previously.

“So the question would be whether these things would stop him taking a stake again.

“I think the answer on both these points is they wouldn’t.

“From the Exchange’s point of view if we are satisfied Rangers’ nominated adviser Daniel Stewart and Company has carried out the correct checks then he would be allowed to make this investment.”

My sources in the City tell me that the decision makers within AIM are furious at what they consider to be utter gobbledygook and are considering further action.

Also in Mr. Ferguson’s exclusive he states: “King is believed to have met Paul Shackleton of Daniel Stewart yesterday to discuss returning to Ibrox as chairman.”

This may come as a surprise to Mr. Shackleton who is on holiday!

The questions the Editor of the Daily Record should be asking today is did Mr. Ferguson speak directly to Aim and directly to Mr. Shackleton’s office or did he just speak to a PR company?

Or, has the Daily Record who talked-up Craig Whyte, Alastair Johnson, Walter Smith, Charles Green and Craig Mather decided facts don’t matter when it comes to Dave King?

I don’t buy or read newspapers, however, I have never heard of the Daily Record’s “John Ferguson”.

He doesn’t sound like a regular hun reporter from the rag.

Exactly. Who else can name me a company with an influential major shareholder, who doesn’t actually hold a position within or on the board of that company?

    The clock starts….NOW!

  13. The most astonishing thing, well, no it isn’t really astonishing, it’s just ‘normal’ for them, is that they continue to publish misleading/erroneous reports when they know, or should know that the true facts are easily checked by various people in ‘blog land’.

Mr Green’s famous story about having paid off Dundee Utd for example.

But then you consider their market and it all makes sense. The gullible hoarde who are not only willing to swallow swallow everything published in these rags but in fact demand ONLY those stories which provide them with comfort in these trying times.

Sorry but those feelings of warmth emanating from down Govan way have a sulphurous odour….

  15. Hi BMCUWP,

I’m sorry I didn’t reply to you yesterday teatime, Operation Grovel was in full flow. The old relationship thing is a two way street, I feel you’re being far too harsh on yourself, there’s always the other side of the story.

I met an old friend recently and she was with a guy we knew in our twenties, she liked him then but he was a wee bit intense and he drove her nuts. Anyway, long story short, nearly thirty years later they’re together and loved up big time. And more importantly, he’s a big Celtic man!

Operation Grovel was a success albeit an expensive one, Buckfast isnae cheap these days. Thank you for your thoughts and I’m certain there’s someone waiting for you and I hope she really appreciates how lucky she is! Hail Hail Bobby and take care

  18. The Evening Times publishes the Pie Man’s insight into tactics and shuffling the pack. Sevcomedian’s are divided on the issue:

‘Coisty plans Ally shuffle for Stenny cup clash

“I have had a couple of conversations with these guys individually and collectively as part of the group.

I remember a manager once saying that you are effectively only as good as the squad of players who are not playing….

You can’t play all of them, but there has to be an appreciation of a team winning games and me showing faith in the lads. We’ve been doing that and the boys aren’t daft…

They are not playing down to the shape of the team we have right now. The two wider ones of a four are more central.” ‘

    ——

‘An interesting read, Ally gives an insight to his formation & tactics, in a general sense rather than game specific.’

    ——

‘Tonight is not the time to shuffle, it is the time to see who has the bottle at the big times like this.’

    ——

‘I see it as getting the so called monkey off All’s back regarding the cup competitions. It would also give us a boost in terms of early silverware and Rangers players need regular cup wins as is our history.’

    ——

‘If we want to continue being the worlds most successful club then every game is a must win’

    ——

‘A good coach would be able to rotate his squad without changing the shape of the side because they’re all playing in the same style at training….

If Barca’ are without Messi does the manager change their shape?’
