Celtic lose crucial tactical element

656

We hoped that Celtic’s anaemic 57 minutes against St Mirren last week would serve as an indication that performance levels needed to improve ahead of yesterday’s game against Newco, but many of the same facets were in evidence.

Anytime I have seen Newco this season they seem to start brightly. By contrast, Celtic tend to feel their way into games in a low-energy manner.  This was evident yesterday.  The game was moments old when Erik Sviatchenko was pressurised into a mistake, which brought Newco deep into Celtic territory.  It was 3 minutes before we crossed the halfway line again.

Erik’s next two touches were also unassured, which interrupted the flow of the ball.  It looked like Newco had decided he was the Celtic player to press.  His central defensive partner was caught flat when a touch by Miller saw the ball pass through him, allowing Waghorn the first of his great opportunities to score.

Passing was clearly ineffective.  Celtic simply didn’t keep possession throughout the game.  The pitch seemed fast, how many times did you see a through ball run out of play?  I wondered if Brendan decided to pull back groundsmen on watering duties?

Scott Brown opened in an advanced central midfield position, often ahead of Stewart Armstrong, with Nir Bitton the only one of the midfield three consistently playing his regular role.  While the objective was clearly to pressurise the Newco defence, it came at a cost of ball retention.

Callum McGregor brought composure to Celtic’s play when he replaced Bitton at halftime.  He was prepared to hold the ball, draw opponents in, and pass or move.  This served to underline how poorly we were in this respect during the first half.

Stewart Armstrong created and scored a goal out of nothing.  When he went off we not only missed his edge around the Newco penalty area, we became porous in midfield.  Ball retention then took a further downturn and we lacked tightness.

Newco deserved their goal and, at that point, I thought deserved their point.  They neutered the left flank threat of Sinclair and Tierney, which isolated Dembele.  With Celtic unable to circulate the ball to any effect, which was the crucial tactical element of the game.

Miller

The psychology of refereeing is a weighty subject.  Bobby Madden booked four Newco players before cautioning Scott Brown, but the real test isn’t applying a player’s first yellow card.  After his booking, Waghorn twice tumbled theatrically inside the box in a blatant attempt to win a penalty.  Both should have resulted in a second caution, but having booked so many Newco players, Madden froze.

Pointing to the penalty spot in added time of a tied game is a big decision for a referee.  For whatever reason, Madden didn’t want to do this when Hill took Leigh Griffiths down with a waist-high challenge.

I could debate the reasons why he didn’t want to do this with you all week, but we both know why.  At least the manager and players know what to expect in the semi-final.

  1. Prior to yesterday Celtic had won 28 Domestic games on the trot. So far this season we have played 35 domestic games, winning 33, & drawing 2. Goals scored 98 conceded 18.

We didn’t play well yesterday and this place is suddenly full of experts, Erik & Boyata won’t do we are lacking here & there, Brendan needs to this or that.

FFS Get over yereselves, we have a top class team that is going to get better, will we lose & draw the odd match? Of course we will, when that happens will CQN go into meltdown? You bet.

P.S. Development Squad nil all at half time, in a game they really need to win. Falkirk are giving them plenty to think about, so COYYBIG>

I recall an article on CQN, which highlighted Celtic players confronting cheating hun refs….that was 1930.

Maybe its about time we dispensed with masonic hun refs.

Spiers – Madden didn’t have a clue what happened and if you don’t know what happened you can’t give it.

Hmm, let’s think – Kirk Broadfoot goes flying through the air. Ref isn’t looking. So, no penalty, right?

  15. Could someone listening explain to me how they are defending Miller on RS. That is beyond belief.

My Dad, who has been watching Celtic since c1930, reckons we have won every trophy in spite of the cheating that has gone on.

  16. Put yourself in the players shoes, they see millar attempting to crock Armstrong and play is waved on.

Now I’m sure Brendan has the players told that they don’t question the cheats with the whistles as it will get you nowhere and prob booked, just ask Mikel, two things will be going through their heads, complain and get booked and bolliked from the manager, wtf is going to happen to me at some point in the game, I could have my career finished by one of these thugs.

Not a great start to the game, our players are on the back foot from the get go, this is happening game after game, spare them a little leeway, they deserve it.

I was not so tired today, but my back gets sore now and again sitting in the bed. I didn’t get the Irish News, which makes me think there is probably something in it that they don’t wish me to see, but who cares. Fr Murphy was in tonight for a few minutes.

The Screws had a quick look around my cell today when I was out getting water. They are always snooping. I heard reports of men beaten up during a wing shift …

    Nothing changes here.

    Translated this reads as follows:

I awoke with the sparrows this morning and the only thought in my head was: here comes another day, Bobby — reminding me of a song I once wrote a long time ago.

    This is it anyway:

I arose this morning as the Screw came,

He thumped my door heavily without speaking,

I stared at the walls, and thought I was dead,

It seems that this hell will never depart.

The door opened and it wasn’t closed gently,

But it didn’t really matter, we weren’t asleep.

I heard a bird and yet didn’t see the dawn of day,

Would that I were deep in the earth.

Where are my thoughts of days gone by,

And where is the life I once thought was in the world.

My cry is unheard and my tears flowing unseen,

When our day comes I shall repay them dearly.

I sing this to the tune Siun Ní Dhuibir.

Bhí na heiníní ag ceiliúracht inniú. Chaith ceann de na buachaillí arán amach as an fhuinneog, ar a leghad bhí duine éigin ag ithe. Dá gcluinfinn an fhuiseog álainn, brisfeadh sí mo chroí.

Anois mar a scríobhaim tá an corrcrothar ag caoineadh mar a théann siad tharam. Is maith liom na heiníní.

Bhuel caithfidh mé a dul mar má scríobhain níos mó ar na heiníní seo beidh mo dheora ag rith ‘s rachaidh mo smaointi ar ais chuig, an t-am nuair abhí mé ógánach, b’iad na laennta agus iad imithe go deo anois, ach thaitin siad liom agus ar a laghad níl dearmad deánta agam orthu, ta siad i mo chroí — oíche mhaith anois.

    (Translated, this reads as follows:)

The birds were singing today. One of the boys threw bread out of the window. At least somebody was eating!

I was lonely for a while this evening, listening to the crows caw as they returned home. Should I hear the beautiful lark, she would rent my heart. Now, as I write, the odd curlew mournfully calls as they fly over. I like the birds.

Well, I must leave off, for if I write more about the birds my tears will fall and my thoughts return to the days of my youth.

They were the days, and gone forever now. But I enjoyed them. They are in my heart — good night, now.

Pedro has never spoken to King……..Dick Wilson is a nightly embarassment on RS…

  20. There I few points I think need to be straightened out regarding the Takeover Panel ruling that have been missed by some of the reporting that I have seen (apologies if I have missed where this has all been reported fully)…

King is not on the hook for making an offer for £14M worth of shares. He does not need to make offers for the Letham, Taylor and Parks shares. See paragraph 104 of the main body of the ruling today (http://www.investegate.co.uk/takeover-appeal-bd-/rns/rangers-international-football-club-plc/201703131139222798Z/) – the offer needs to be in line with the Exectuive’s original ruling, as summarised by parapgraphs 19 and 20. Particularly paragraph 20, which states:

” The Executive also determined that an obligation should be imposed on Mr King to extend a Rule 9 offer to other shareholders in Rangers. It directed him to make an offer in accordance with Rule 9 for all of the issued shares in Rangers not owned by him and Messrs Letham, Taylor and Park. The offer was to be made at the price of 20p per share.”

This leaves 53.7M shares that King needs to make an offer for – the value of which is around £10.75M. The total value is lower but I think this is a bad thing for King. This is because he doesn’t have his allies in the game, making the achievement of a 50% acceptance condition (King only has to actually buy the shares if a minimum of 50% of the shareholding accepts the offer) a lot more of risk than if the 3 bears were included. Letham, Taylor and Park consitute 19.5% of the overall shareholding, and King could have relied on them to effecitvely block any necessary purchase. With the 3 bears the 50% threshold of ~26.86M share can be hit if Ashley, Easdale and all the institutional directors take up Mr King’s kind offer to get take all of their absolutely worthless shares for 20p a pop. I’m not saying they will but that’s the possibility. Meaning that if 50% of the shareholding sold up, King has to find more than £5M he doesn’t have.

However, in reality, there isn’t going to be an offer. To make an offer King has to prove that he has the funds to finance the purchase the shares in the first place – he doesn’t. So it will be the ole “cold shoulder” anyway.

David Low correctly points out on Twitter that if King was credible this would be a great opportunity for him to increase his holding in the club and successfully vote through the Disapplication of Pre-Emptive rights resolution at his leisure. Meaning that he and the 3 bears can magnanimously convert their loans to equity, and save the day of the P&L front (for a while). But King doesn’t want to actually do that, does he? Maybe the 3 bears would do it, but King wouldn’t. That’s because the money he has put into Rangers, well, probably isn’t actually his. There have been various stories regarding him sourcing his investment (allegedly) from some dudes in Hong Kong who expect it to go on a delicates wash and spin at Ibrox. Do you think they’d be chuffed to bits if King converted that money to worthless equity?

That resolution was never about converting debt to equity, it was about getting their grubby paws on the Club 1872 subscription money and edging out Ashley and Easdales (actually, I’m not even convinced it was about that either – it was really just about the Club 1872 money). So King has been shown up to be a fraud – here he has the chance to get Ashley and Easdale block out of the club and achieve goals stated in their resolution at the AGM, but no, Davie boy is instead having a right good whinge about this golden opportunity…because he’s skint.

He’s a busted flush (but you knew that).

  21. I think that a draw was a fair result on Sunday. Our performance did not merit any better.

  22. Fairhill,

I assume you are Scottish and that Fairhill is a district in Glasgow or surrounding area.

There is also a very famous area on the North side of Cork City called FairHill, with a very famous song written about it called The Boys of FairHill. It’s actually one of my favourite Ballads and when I have a few pints in me I’m well known for giving a blast of it.

  23. So the (very) strange appointment of Brother Pedro is starting to make sense(sic)!

His agent appears to be ex-Rangers (now deid) player Pedro Mendes who, it seems, has been, possibly, hawking his client around Europe and maybe beyond.

    Still to meet the GASL?!

    Good luck there son!
