Celtic pay the Penalty, supporter relations

1687

I received an email from John Paul Taylor, Celtic’s recently appointed Supporter Relations’ Manager, asking for some help getting the message of his appointment out to the support, and explaining what he is there to do.  This, for a guy whose inbox will never be empty, was a refreshingly proactive approach.

Here are the questions I put to John Paul, with his answers below:

So what is the scope of your Supporter Relations remit?

“The role is basically to provide a link between supporters and the Club.  Since starting I’ve had a number of issues to deal with including the 5:15 Kick Off, Hearts away and what supporters should do in terms of submitting ticket applications given their current financial plight, supporter behaviour and specifically the Section 111 issue.

“I’ve also travelled to Sweden to provide information and assistance to supporters and officials of If Elfsborg at our UCL Qualifier and more recently I have been working with supporters who have been trying to obtain visas for Kazakhstan.  In addition to this I have been working with colleagues relative to Stadium Catering and providing feedback in order that we can assess what happens next, so as you can see a wide and varied range of issues to work on.”

What will you be able to do if supporters come with issues around policing or stewarding?

“These are basically matters which come under the remit of the Operations Director, however there is a responsibility on my part to ensure that they are being addressed.  Consequently any issues raised will be discussed and action appropriate action taken.

“Naturally any action has to be consistent and appropriate to the nature of the complaint.  The issue of Policing of Celtic Supporters is very much to the fore at the moment and we welcome feedback and specific examples of inappropriate or unfair treatment.”

There are tens of thousands of contacts between supporters and the club, between getting entry to the ground, to buying a cola to using the toilets.  Lots of these interactions don’t hit the mark, if you are successful in getting things done, you know it’s only a matter of time before you’re swamped, unless the supporter experience reaches legendary levels?

“I think this is a good point, however I think in the main supporters are generally satisfied with their match day experience.  Quite clearly though there are some things that we could do better, equally there will be times where we just get it wrong.  This is where the service aspect of my role comes into play and I would ask that on such occasions, supporters make me aware in order that we can provide a swift resolution through the relevant Departments.

“That is a particularly challenging aspect to the role but I believe that we are putting processes in place which are helping us turn around our complaint handling very quickly.”

Are there limits to what you can talk to fans about?

“Football and Finance are really areas where I can’t offer any real assistance.  Although, like almost every football fan in the world I would consider myself to be a football expert its one area that there are people more qualified than me to speak about these things when it comes to Club matters “

Have the club established a route for you to get things done?

“I think because this is an entirely new role we are working on a ‘let’s see how it develops’ basis.  Naturally I have KPI’s and specific projects that I need to complete but I am working for a lot of the time on my own initiative and providing feedback on the key issues of the day so it’s important to keep a handle on everything that’s going on with the support and what the main topics are.

“I think being close to supporters and having a wide circle of friends and family who are supporters is a real benefit in this respect.”

Final question, who are we going to sign?

“Ha, see the answer to question 4!!!”

I made the point to John Paul that if CQN is anything to go by, in many areas, satisfying one group of supporters is almost certainly going to compromise relations with another – the nature of a divergent club, open and tolerant of all from inception, perhaps, so this is not an easy shift.

That being said, news today suggests he’s off to a good start, which as Mo Bangura will tell you, is half the battle at Celtic.

CELTIC PAY THE PENALTY

I’m sure your mind has already cast ahead to Wednesday night.  We will have plenty of possession inside the Shakhter box, which will increase the likelihood of being awarded a penalty kick.

Failure to properly prepare for penalty kicks has cost this football club more than I am prepared to recall in recent seasons, so we must be aware of the following:

There is a high probability we will be awarded a penalty.

Shakhter will know that Kris Commons is likely to hit any penalty.

Shakhter will know that Kris hit his last penalty straight down the middle.

We should prepare not just for a penalty kick competition, but for penalties during normal time.

This is not in response to your post but to all users.

If Celtic fans don’t want to continually be screwed.

They MUST cancel there BT subscription as they claim Secvo are the same club as Rangers. If you don’t. Don’t complain in a couple of years when Newco Rangers take the place of Oldco Rangers and nobody bothered to stop it. Just admit and accept YOU are helping to created the new firm and you want it.

What are our club Celtic doing about this corruption? Nothing. Ziltch. Nada. They can’t wait for the return of Rangers.

Their silence and zero action to stop it confirms it. Makes me sick. Hard to accept. Horrible to accept.

I’d LOVE anyone to prove me wrong.

I understand what the board do and why. It is simple. Money. I don’t understand why so many Celtic supporters accept it.

They can’t all be stupid. Maybe they can explain to me how this is acceptable. Our club is being destroyed at the time when we have the opportunity to distance ourself from them.

To put them out the game forever. It makes me SICK.

Something I don’t get. I saw who let of the bangers at CP. So did the stewards. I saw them speak and laugh with them. There are facial re cognitional cameras and many other cameras focussed on section 111. Was it because they weren’t GB members but it was enough rope to try and hang the GB.

Who was to know the support GB got from the majority of fans, or that their support would be so badly needed after having a difficult leg, after selling star players and not replacing them then losing out on a gamble.

It is quite clear and sickening how complicit Celtic have been co-operating with the cops. Far beyond requirement. Why we need to bend over while the underclass on the south-side behave with impunity is beyond me. It’s no wonder the young lads are sickened to the level they are going to less games.

    NegAnon2 @ 22:31

Celtic have failed to even prove they were warned of ground closures. That comes first.

We are not buttoned up the back Celtic. Fans like me can see the problem and have serious concerns about the draconian action dressed up as a last resort.

    NegAnon2 @ 22:35

I find the Celtic support who take the stance of being better Celtic supporters than others nauseating. CQN is particularly bad for it.

The number of posters who post what other posters think is incredible too. It’s as if we have different goals.

    John O’Neil @ 22:44

Celtic can not stand up for the club or their supporters or things will be turned against them. That is the clubs stance (sic).

I am still upset that I asked my club for support regarding police harassment in the Gallowgate and our Hearts supporting Operations manager told me he wished I continued to support the club. Note. No offer of support. The only offer made to me was to pass my details to the police. A polite F off.

I hope you can tell me that you told me so and that they are finished. If that ever happens.

However, I suspect I will be highlighting that we never finished them off when we should have.

Reading that post makes me think of Maggie McGill finally giving up as the best of Celtic fans act like battered women.

I am not a fan of any religion. I find it prehistoric. I can see the bill for what it is. Anti-Catholic. The quiet acceptance of the bill makes me fear for Catholics in Scotland. Not because I care much about them but because I care who’ll be the next victims.

I support Scottish independence only because it is the only escape from English right wing government. I understand their fear of Catholics, Having a fear of independence. I can see why it is important to crush them. I also see why it is important that any organised political group that doesn’t suit those in power needs to be crushed.

You are becoming my favourite poster on CQN

Celtic’s primary goal is to make money. They are not the church.

I use to wonder why Celtic crave a ‘Rangers’ so much until it dawned on me they need competition and the fans need a team to hate. Celtic are stuck in Scotland. It’s better to take turns each with the pot of gold than to neither have it. MANY Celtic fans can’t wait to have the underclass back. Imagine what it would be like in five years time. It’s just two so far an already most are gagging for ‘their’ (I know it is a newco, so that’s ok)

    NegAnon2 @ 23:29

Get independence and free from the right wing English voter then get rid of small-minded SNP.

The bigot pound had won. I never imagined this would happen but RFC dying has highlighted to me how much CFC need the bigot pound.

We are just wrestling fans. It is so very sad but it is true. It didn’t need to be this way and I hope there is still time for Celtic to do an about-turn on this but it is looking HIGHLY unlikely.

    John O’Neil @23:38

Scotland is not full of bigotry!!

Oh my! Maybe you should spend sometime out of it and see it when you return. It is like a time from the past. It’s rife. Riddled.

I agree with you completely that Celtic supporters can’t wait for… how did Maggie McGill put it?

    It’s so fecking sad.

I have came to the conclusion that it is game over. The Huns going bust killed us. Not because they cheated but because we need the hate more than the sport or justice. It’s tribal to the most base. No wonder DD can run Celtic to make money and not even buy a striker. Nobody cares.

Get the Huns back ASAP and take turns at who lifts the trophies while both owners screw everyone senseless.

  16. I am pleased to discover that Peter Lawwell, on reading my comments on CQN criticising the board for their decision to close Section 111, decided to take my advice and reverse the decision.

Big Peter obviously realised that if such a hitherto staunch supporter of the board was outraged at such a decision, it had to be flawed.

  20. Murdochbhoy supporting Fearless Oscar on

Reading back I was disheartening to read so many posts that disparaged our midfield.

Our midfield has its faults and I’ve been critical in the past but I always tempered any criticism with the fact that collectively and individually our midfield performs best when required to perform a defensive role. It pretty much reflects NL’s playing style.Last Tuesday their role was more offensive in nature and only Commons really shone which was no surprise.

Next Wednesday I would expect to see our midfield adopt their usual defensive role as its crucial we don’t concede. It’ll be corners and free kicks to bypass the Karagandy bus, and of course Paul67’s penalties.

This summers defensive acquisitions and the addition of Thomas Rogic would suggest a little flair and pace have been added and I would expect to see our midfield to be released from some of their defensive burden and be a little more creative in the future, however I for one won’t be surprised if we see occasional setbacks like we witnessed on Tuesday.

  21. Morrissey the 23rd

You assert in a very aggressive manner that Celtic’s main objective is to screw their fans for as much money as possible. What happens to all the money? Dividends to shareholders? Is it secreted away to an offshore tax haven? PL’s bonus?

There are many companies that could/should be boycotted. Do you have a bank account? If so, YOU are helping to perpetuate a system which screws ordinary families throughout the world. Do you buy Nescafe coffee? Have you ever had a Big Mac? So because BT Sport has a couple of hun commentators, no self respecting Celtic supporter should subscribe? Geeza break! BBC? STV? SKY ffs?

The only comment Celtic have made throughout the whole hun debacle has been that our business plan is in place irrespective of what’s happening at any other club. I think that was said in the run up to admin 1. Since then the club has maintained a dignified while the huns have committed hari kari in spectacular fashion.

If Celtic were to be seen to actively “put the boot into” sevco, it would act as a rallying call to the hordes. The most effective tactic by far is to let them expose themselves. The fans of most other clubs in Scotland are discovering that they do not need the bigot pound. For them to gain any respect, they must reform, drop the WATP attitude and pay their bills like everybody else.

Without doubt, Celtic have mishandled the GB. But a truce has been brokered and we should step back and see if it holds. There is nothing to be gained by shouting from the sidelines at this stage. I can see why some fans feel betrayed but trust must be built between those fans and the club so that we can move forward. The first small steps have been taken.

I totally disagree that we need to hate anyone. The club playing out of Ibrox seem to think they do. Look where that’s taken them.

There is, of course, bigotry in Scotland. It has been acknowledged by the government and, despite the ham-fisted legislation, I’m confident that it will be tackled. 450 years of bigotry cannot be wiped out with the stroke of a pen or a piece of legislation. And it is not the job of Celtic Football Club to lead a campaign to end it.

If Scottish independence is achieved, the SNP will have fulfilled its purpose, and politics will revert to left v right, I agree with you that there is more chance of a left leaning government in an independent Scotland than in a right leaning England led UK.

If FFP comes into operation, a prudently run Celtic could compete at the top level. If not, then perhaps the occasional run to perhaps a CL quarter final is the best we can achieve.

On the football side, how do you propose we improve our player recruitment?

You often seem to be very angry and that makes your arguments weaker. IMO.

He is wasting in my view.

I myself have criticised the club for no replacing players who have departed and leaving us short for the CL qualifiers.

    However when I analyse it.

It is not the boards fault that Lenny has bought players who have been unfit or not up to the required standard to participate in the most important matches of our season.
