Celtic scintillate. The Red Sea flows by Govan

Part of me would like to believe that Celtic destroyed Ferencvaros with a multi-cultural display of slick football as a consequence of the hostile reception they received for an expression of support for racial equality before kick-off.    But that’s not true.  The home supporters deserved no more than to see their team bettered and beaten, Celtic would have been as fabulous no matter.

An early goal followed by an early concession gave the expectation that anything could happen.  Liel Abada’s returned to the first team after a few weeks rest did him the power of good, he snatched onto a poor defensive touch, squaring for Kyogo.  What followed took me back 20 years….. it’s been that long since we’ve had someone with such composure.

Joe Hart could do nothing about the deflected equaliser but when he smothered a shot midway through the first half, he sprung to his feet to release a break.  David Turnbull got the faintest of touches for what would prove to be another assist as the ball found its way to Joto on the left.  The Portuguese drew four defenders before firing a shot that clipped one on its way into the net off a post.

Celtic were on fire now and spurned several chances to stretch their lead, the best when Kyogo controlled an inch-perfect Turnbull pass before dinking the goalkeeper, only to be denied by a goal line clearance.  When the third came, it was another poster moment for great football.  Turnbull won the ball for McGregor to find Kyogo, who played a pass into the box, between defenders.  Abada did not break his stride as he found the corner of the goal.

A late consolation brought Ferencvaros within striking distance of Celtic but the visitors managed the game to the final whistle without concern.  The Europa League knockout rounds are still a possibility but it will almost certainly be the Conference League, which Celtic are now assured of.

Newco accounts for the year to 30 June 2021 are out.  I’ll do a more in-depth look later, a few headlines:

Comprehensive loss for the year was £26.024m, elsewhere you will mainly see the lower operating loss figure quoted, not that £24.153m is low.

For Financial Fair Play purposes, Uefa permit this loss to be adjusted due to the unique circumstances we have lived through.  A quick ready reckoner of this:

While other revenue streams and costs remain consistent with the previous campaigns, gate receipts are down £17.46m (no fans spending money at games) and operating costs are down £8.8m (no fans to serve or steward at games).  Subtract the former from the latter and Uefa will forgive £8.6m of the comprehensive loss, reducing the Financial Fair Play loss to £17.42m or thereabouts.

Football has returned to largely normal operations this year, so that £17.42m figure is a good proxy for Newco’s forward comprehensive loss.  For a business that has never earned more than £59m in its history, the lambeg drums must be ringing the alarm!  There’s so much red ink at Ibrox you’d mistake the Clyde for the Red Sea.

  9. I’ve read we’re due a £1.5-2 million add on for Christie should Bournemouth get promoted this season. That looks very likely at the moment. They’ve won 4-0 today and are 8 points clear of third.

To think that a huge amount of Celtic fans demonstrate how easily led that they are, by voting for these frauds, is a demonstration, maybe an explanation, as to why the last 10 years has been a great betrayal of the Celtic fans before them, who would’ve physically removed a Celtic board of custodians for rolling about the bed with kilted Thatcherites. 😶

Yesterday’s match between Brøndby IF and Rangers FC ended 1-1, and both teams therefore got a point and more in the Europa League group game. Unfortunately, before, during and after the match there were battles with especially a group of Rangers fans.

CEO Ole Palmå talks about the security in connection with the match.

    – We have had a massive security effort up to this match, as Rangers fans have been trying for a long time to get tickets for the match. Rangers FC were awarded the obligatory five percent of the stadium capacity (1,400 tickets, ed.), And the outdoor section was immediately sold out. In addition to the 1,400 tickets, Rangers fans have not been allowed to get tickets to other sections of Brøndby Stadion, but despite constant communication from us, we have had to go in and cancel several hundred tickets over the last week, as Rangers- fans in various ways got their fingers in. We have on several occasions reached out to Rangers FC about this security risk, as Rangers fans are known and infamous for their fans trying to get into episodes they do not have access to, but we has had to conclude that we and the Copenhagen West Region Police have stood alone with this challenge.

Before the start of yesterday’s match, more than 500 Rangers fans were turned away at the entrances to Brøndby Stadion with invalid and fake tickets, just as the ticket control and the gates to the away sections were tried several times up to the opening of the stadium by Rangers fans, which meant that Copenhagen’s Vestegns Police had to pull the poles several times to ensure that only those with a valid ticket entered.

A large group of Scottish spectators were given access to Rangers FC’s sponsorships as part of UEFA’s requirements for the Europa League group stage. Rangers FC was responsible for the administration and distribution of these VIP tickets. Brøndby IF’s assessment of the group in question was that it consisted of “risk fans”, but when asked directly at the entrance to the sponsorship places, Rangers FC confirmed to Brøndby IF’s head of security, Mickel Lauritzen, that this group were sponsors of the club.

    Mickel Lauritzen explains the episode.

    – Unfortunately, our immediate risk assessment of this group of Rangers fans turned out to be correct. It was clear that this group was what we call “risk fans,” and shortly after their arrival, this group hung a flag on the sponsor seats, which can be connected to Rangers FC’s risk fans. Then it quickly developed into a car crash with a group of Brøndby fans, where our guards and the police had to intervene and calm the mood. During the match, this group acted threateningly towards spectators and staff, and several times threw beer at surrounding spectators, just as during the break they attacked random spectators on the toilets. Together with the police, we assessed that it entailed too great a risk to remove this group of “risk fans” from the stands, so we chose instead to place more guards in the area where they were sitting. When the group was escorted away from the stadium after the match, a riot broke out again outside the stadium between them and a group of Brøndby fans.

CEO Ole Palmå talks about a good collaboration with the police, and praises the many stewards who ensured an otherwise good outcome of the match.

    – We had a really good and constructive collaboration with the police yesterday, in what was a very unusual and difficult task. We would also like to thank our many hundreds of stewards at the stadium for making very thorough checks of fans, which helped to ensure that only those with tickets came in, despite the fact that several Scottish fans had worn Brøndby IF jerseys and scarves. All in all, there was a fantastic atmosphere in the stands during the match, where Sydsiden to that extent showed Brøndby Stadion by getting the whole stadium with them.

    – However, it is by no means acceptable that a group of Brøndby fans resort to suicide in the stands and get into a fight. It belongs nowhere. We strongly dissociate ourselves from such behavior, and we are now embarking on reviewing all video footage from the fight in cooperation with the police so that we can identify the people who participated and secure sanctions, including quarantine
