Celtic, St Johnstone and flash-in-the-pan winners

274

St Johnstone could cement their position as Scotland’s second most successful team over the last decade.  Not that they found it easy, they were pushed all the way to a penalty kick win last night to secure their place in the Scottish Cup semi-finals.

While Celtic have won 19 major trophies in the last decade, Saints are the second most successful club in the country with two wins.  St Mirren or Kilmarnock, who play their quarterfinal tonight, could join them on two wins if they take the cup, as would Hibs, if they followed their 2016 success with a win this season, although Hibs tradition is to leave a respectful 114-year gap between Scottish Cup wins.

Apart from Celtic and St Johnstone there have been eight other flash-in-the -pan winners, seven of whom are solvent, not dependent on regular cash calls or in breach of Uefa Financial Fair Play regulations.  I know it’s been a hard year but solvency always has the final say.

probably would have taken Wright as a punt, like we did with Christie/Allen/Morgan

as bad as Ajeti’s first season has been, i’d still have taken him over the similarly priced Roofe. Can still come good; Roofe is past his peak

As much as enjoyed last night’s entertainment it does nothing to take away our own deficiencies

The best 2 highlights of our season are the 93rd minute at Love Street and a cavalier goalkeeperIf our only success is our enemies failure we have a long way to go

For clarity I enjoyed it – but it’s little comfort

Its a genuine question, why does issuing shares contravene Financial Fair play?

  6. Notthebus

An extract from Wikipedia on FFP

A number of clubs across Europe were historically in a position to spend substantially more than they earned as a result of the benevolence of their owners who made substantial financial gifts to the club, either by paying off existing debt, providing direct injections of cash, issuing extra shares or giving loans which are later written off

  7. Notthebus

This is the simple version – Financial Fair Play Regulations (FFP) were established to prevent professional football clubs spending more than they earn in the pursuit of success and in doing so getting into financial problems which might threaten their long-term survival.

    Spending more than they earn…

Actually, I’d struggle to recognise a lot of the hun players these days.

As much as I enjoyed last night, it reaffirmed how poor we’ve been this year.

It’s arguable that 4 trebles is a greater achievement than 9 in a row. The latter has been done three times, whereas no-one came close to winning 12 trophies in a row, previously.

  10. Our Board backed Lennon in no sales and money for new players. WE had gambled on 10 in a row. The players who had won the quadruple treble didn’t buy in and w blew it big time.

We will lose money due to Covid 19. These loses will affect 3 financial years at least. We have showed that we will gamble and go into debt and we will gain.

Everyone knows we need to buy players and we will hopefully Ajer and Eddy will bring in good money as Christie and N’tcham now wont bring in much. Ajeti, Shved and Barkas will not show a profit.

If we were to bring in £30m then that will not be enough to buy a team to win the League. Remember we need 12 players with Scottish youth Development so we will likely need 4/5 to augment our numbers.

I reckon this window will be a record both In and out transfers.

There is a bit of misunderstanding going on. The references to GBP only mean the currency denomination.

For example, the allotment on 17th April 2021 is for £430,000, 2,150,000 Ordinary shares at 20p each. This allotment takes the total share number issued to 390,441,872 from 388,291,872. Copies of any of these Statements can be purchased from Companies House for £1.

You’re right we won the cup but at the risk of sounding hugely pedantic, it was technically last season.

My reference to King & “fold” does not refer to our club folding – but the ability to challenge for honours folding in the short-term. That short-term may be all Ibrox needs to get their noses in front again.

Our challenge, which should have be supercharged by 10iar folded, our UEFA challenged folded in both competitions, our League Cup challenge folded, our Scottish Cup challenge folded. The word folded in my understanding means going down without putting up a fight.

I have no doubt our club will never be in jeopardy with DD in charge.

  16. Guyfawkes

Your right, my apologies, I forgot to do the 20p in the pound purchase price which brings it right down to £6-7m in value but the principle of pumping money to keep the lights on pattern seems sound?

  17. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

Sevco have NEVER made a profit.

In the last two seasons they reached the latter stages of the Europa League ….

…. and still made huge losses

  18. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

An idiot Sevco fan’s understanding of company value ….

Last year there were 300 million shares in circulation at a NOTIONAL value of 20p.

Therefore the club was worth £60m.

The directors have issued 100 million new shares since taking the total to 400m.

So the club MUST be worth £80m now !

  19. Far too many Celtic fans underestimating the dangerous situation we are currently in , in comparison to Sevco.

Their directors have their hands in their own pockets ( what have ours done ?) and loaned the club ten’s of millions.

They have then converted the loans / debt owed to them into shares .

Each time they do it , they de value the worth of their shares .

They will do another share issue this summer .

In the hope that CL income will increase the share value back up .

The net result is that they will have very little debt , if indeed any .

Cries that they are breaking FFP rules are mute.

IF they qualify for next seasons CL ( their seeding and EL form ) indicate that this is more likely than not .

They will have circa £40 income from CL participation.

If they win next seasons SPFL ( which they are heavy favourites to do , at this point in time ).

They will be guaranteed another circa £40m for CL participation.

    A £80m injection of income .

It is a rolling snowball of income .

One that Celtic will not be able to compete with .

It is imperative that Celtic win this seasons SPFL and get the guaranteed CL qualification and the circa £40 m that goes with it .

    Jibes about 1 trophy in 12 .

St Johnstone winning more trophies than them .( How bad are Celtic that StJohnstone could win 2 cups in one season , and we can’t even reach a quarter final.)

We just have our heads built in the sand .

    Make no mistake.

This is the most important season since we stopped their bid for 10.

It’s all about winning the league and gaining the CL income .

We need to make their snowball melt .

  20. Celtic40me………….All clubs have been severely hit by this pandemic and may possibly explain the antics of the Dirty Dozen and their money men. It’s mind boggling the millions these clubs pay for players and to maintain a squads most of whom are on over a quarter million quid a week, they must be feeling the pinch. Heard a stat on radio this morning that Man City paid over a 100 million quid for two full backs.

  21. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

If you measure a stadium’s age by the length of time since a significant structural modernisation and uplift – Sevco have the SPFL’s oldest stadium.

  22. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

Sevco’s debt to SDI (while skilfully and opportunistically kicked down the road) has not gone away

    And is actually getting larger.

  23. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    Crunch the numbers available.

Admittedly there are gaps due to lack of information (wonder why)

What number (£x millions) do you think is needed for Sevco to

    a) pay off debt to current directors

    b) pay off debt to ex-directors

    c) pay off debt to Close Brothers

    d) pay off debt to SDI

    e) pay off all football debts (those pesky 2nd and 3rd instalments for all those players)

    f) bring Old Ibrokes up to scratch

    g) recapitalise the company

A run in the Champions League?

    … and the rest !

  24. Those who are putting money into the Ibrox club are not doing it to throw their cash away. There is an emotional attachment to the Rangers name, but they also believe that by helping the club to the top in Scotland and into the Champions League, there will be a return on their investment.

How could/would that happen? – quite simply in my opinion, sell when the time is right. By using their confetti shares they are ensuring that the club remains debt-free – of course they have no facility anywhere, anyway.

Celtic are worth around c£100m as a club at the moment. If the Ibrox club carry on into the CL groups, win the title next season with automatic CL entry – at that point I contend they’re worth would be on a par with Celtic c£100m. *Remember they would still be a debt-free business

*Rangers have around 225 million issued shares of one class, or, another – for talking sake then let’s do ‘fag packet’ calculation and assume that the share price might be floated at £0.45 per share (225m @ £0.45 = c£100m)

Current shareholders who bought at £0.20 would see 100%plus return on their investment.

I am quite happy to be corrected if someone has more info and/or firmer figures.

  25. At some point, the 2nd Rangers will tactically go into Admin, reform as a new company, liquidate the old company, take all the trophies that rangers mark 1 had, add in the 1 the 2nd entity has, and come back as the 3rd Rangers Volunteers. in keeping with their milataristic fetiches.

oh and add in the thirds championships and cups so they can overtake Al Ahta as the world most succesful continuos club.

Absolutely correct re: Huns keeping lights on with share confetti

Nobody is batting an eyelid at this utter nonsense.

Celtic are either negligent at best, or complicit at worst.

    Neither option is acceptable.

  29. Since first posting on CQN a long time ago I have had cause every now and then to say:

I can enjoy a sevco or oldco defeat while still recovering all of our shortcomings.

Sometimes you just have to soak it up and drink it in.

Also, all these well heeled orcs keeping the lights on. Where were they in 2011/12? Honestly, I don’t buy the notion that they are keeping things afloat. It smacks of dodgy dealing.

Others have pointed out that their eye on the CL prize is a shortsighted one.

Will their current squad be adequate for a CL qualifying campaign? If not they need to spend and therefore lessen the worth of qualification. And as we know there are no guarantees there. Seeded or not the CL even at that stage is a step up from the teams they played all season. First half decent side they faced who were on reasonable domestic form pumped them.

As always, the destination of the title next season is about what we do, not what they do. That is where my fears lie. But for now, both their season and ours are effectively over. Hopefully we beat them in the upcoming dead rubber, but other than that yesterday was probably the most fun I’ve had watching football all season!
