Anderlecht knew what they had to do and that was attack us and try to score three goals.
Celtic were defending a lead knowing that avoiding a 3-0 loss would see us qualify.
Usually this would be a away scenario after a fine 3-0 win at Parkhead.
The only comparable game was when we somewhat unexpectedly beat Ajax in the Champions League qualifiers in Amsterdam then lost 1-0 at Celtic Park in the second leg.
Tonight’s performance wasn’t great but the 3-0 win in Brussels had a huge impact on both teams tonight.
And actually it was Anderlecht and not Celtic who came up short this evening.

But still in the EL,and I doubt we can ever play so badly again.

These players, this manager, don’t owe us anything-we owe them.
Tonight,we owe them a wee bit less.

I have said before playing any two from Armstrong ,McGregor and Rogic is not a goo idea in Europe.
They do not possess the defensive and positional awareness leaving Brown with two much to do.

Thank you for that.
Schoolboy howler by myself.
Unlike the current squad I have a CL outlook.
They would struggle in the Inter Toto Cup.
No matter the numbers I am interested to see who we get in the draw.
Then how the games pan out — we have the ability to be competitive but we don’t have the attitude to make a game of it.
You could see those who couldn’t be bothered and you could see those that played with the fear.
The defence was reasonable but KT got monstered by their RW.
The MF was all over the place in both halves.
The difference was that in the second we actually created things — thank you ON.
However the sight of JF inventing a new poistion of right 3/4 back will live long in the memory.

Thought it would/could be a tough game tonight.
Difficult to motivate to the same level as Anderlecht who got in the groove early doors. They pressed Celtic high from the off and grew from there.
Broonie was, again, immense; Bhoyatta, Ntcham did really well; and Forrest, after he got over the first half knock, continued his confidence fuelled form.
Sometimes you are bested by the opponent and all you can do on the night is roll your sleeves up and try. That’s an area Brendan should focus on, as at least one of the starters didn’t.
Grateful that the players were able to see it out.
A question to all those asking for the popular panacea of “gie’s a centre-back” that’ll fix it ? What will it fix, it was aired as a solution to the drubbing in Paris. A good solid centre-back……….how will that sort the deficit, disparity between Simnovic-Boyatta; Neymar-Cavani ?
It will probably stifle Ajer’s opporchancity. The big guy could be the guy Pedro mentioned a few weeks back.
Final word to the supporter four seats in front of me who thought it a booster to shout “I didn’t pay my money to watch this S**te Celtic”.
We are a broad church.

Tonight’s performance was absolutely disgraceful. Not “wasn’t great”,disgraceful.
They hit us hard from the start, never let up,and we didn’t come near to them at any time.
I feel for every fan who attended tonight, especially those who spent a fortune to do so. There’s no excuses, mate. No pass marks, just a disaster.
We can move on from it,and make sure it never happens again.
The worst display under Brendan, for sure. Worst I can remember for a long time, first time I can remember knowing we had no chance of scoring.

Spoilt brats at CP — have to agree.

I posted on Saturday after the game not about us but about newly promoted Strasbourg besting PSG by parking the bus. Losing 7 goals isn’t streetwise, tonight was.

Perhaps not great to watch but bizarre circumstances. A CL group game that morphed into a two legged affair with us 3-0 up from the away leg.
I don’t think we’ve ever experienced that scenario before.

I agree it was a horrible performance but glad to be in EL
No attempt to play the Celtic way but job done
No progress on last season but we finish third
No joy at the final whistle but would have felt worse had we finished fourth.
No glorious failure but no glory in qualifying for EL
Dynamism lost but we keep achieving
Will someone explain how I should be feeling?

Here I am at Bellgrove station after the game. Haven’t read back. But I’m sure there’s plenty of debate! I feel I just watched a Pot 4 vs Pot 3 match. Anderlecht have better players. They have the technique to control, pass and move, fitness, awareness etc. And it showed tonight.
However, they needed to score. They didn’t although there was 80mins on the clock before I felt comfortable. We’re through and it’s a great feeling. No doubt we’ll face similarly good teams in the EL.
What a journey it is.

86th minute total fluff at the corner sums it up for me. Short corner Celtic Anderlecht break. Pure pish
Can’t understand McGregor getting grief. Once Ntcham and Rogic came on wee CalMac was involved in much of the good stuff we did. He has possibly the best close control of all our players and while he’s not the guy to grab a game by the neck single handed, he thrives when playing with the likes of Tom Rogic. Not so much with Armstrong.
Armstrong and Sinclair are off the boil. But they can play. We will sing their praises again at some stage.
For me the team that finished tonight should start on Sunday with griff starting over Odsonne.
Celtsrella – I thought it demonstrated a bit of inexperience.
Melvin Udall on
What that game proved tonight is that we’ve just put a very good team out of Europe.
In that form, Anderlecht would’ve have troubled better teams than us.
Well done Celtic in Belgium. Huge result.
We need a couple of players in in January and have to maybe make Armstrong prove he deserves his place in the team. As he hasn’t performed since he signed his one year extension.
Rogic and Ntcham should have started tonight. With McGregor and Armstrong on the bench.
Moussa hasn’t performed for a few games now either. Not sure I’d have started him ahead of the Griff. Didn’t seem to work. Odsonne did well when he came on though.

WTF was our final ball all about?
WTF were we doing? They kept giving us the ball and we did the sum total of zip with it
WTF was our attitude after we got a lucky OG. Did we really press for more or did you see what I did….happy to have won but no conviction to go for the other two we needed.
Simply horrible and disgraceful
ughAye on
I have not seen the game yet ,will watch it tonight
Doesn’t sound like it was an enjoyable watch
The only thing I can say is over the years I have heard many times how brave Celtic played and how close we came to winning but in the end we were out, I got fed up being great losers
As I say I have not watched the game but maybe this is as close to parking the bus or as close to playing to preserve a tie as Brendan will come ,I have had enough of those all out attacks and just falling short
I am a lot happier being just good enough to win and build on the experience
Good teams are built on a good foundation Brendan is just starting we are hurting but not out
Natknow – fitness wise I would question whether they were fitter. I said at half time that very few teams could sustain the level of pressing and movement for 90 minutes and so it proved. I thought we looked physically stronger than them throughout the second half.
I am always puzzled that Euro teams look better at the basics even when they don’t seem to be better teams ultimately. There were one or two of them I would be happy to see in the Hoops.
We were bullied in the first half with the midfield being overrun. Brendan sorted it at halftime. Broonie was immense – held it together- a true Captain.
