For a long time we have been hit by sucker punches in Europe ( and too often domestically too) due to our driving forward in numbers and leaving gaping holes at the back.
BR had a difficult job tactically last night. 1-1 is one of those knife edge situations.
I thought we played it just right.
Happy to move the ball around and probe for an opening.
Roberts going off upset the rhythm somewhat.
It was an error that let them back in , but even after they scored, I never felt we were going to lose.
I said 2 months ago I’d take EL football this season, win the title and be better prepared for next years CL.
If we get through to CL group stage, added bonus. ( insert your PL jokes here)

I never thought I’d see the return of the jungle but the standing section last night was as close to it. They really are the twelfth man, brilliant, and like the old days they kept the whole stadium buzzing.
I’ve been away on holiday so last night was my first experience of Section 111. As a veteran of the jungle since the late 60’s/early 70’s t’s not as “compact” or “intimate” as the Jungle, but it’s as close to the atmosphere as you will get in the modern day game. Big difference is that the GB ‘capos’ lead and orchestrate all the singing whereas in the old Jungle, songs and chants would spring up from various places as we all had our own version of the ‘capo’ (I used to be one of them) in our own wee group (usually based upon supports buses, home location etc.). Often led to friendly rivalry to see who could get the best chants going as I recall (though some memories are “fuzzy” due to the amount of libation consumed before and during the games). Still, it’s a great move forward and I was pleased to see evidence of a good number of “older clientele” visible in the standing section – we are still harking back to our youth!
TET, Sounds like you and your good lady are going through a tough time just now. Thoughts and prayers. Keep posting, I really like your posts.

Huge call last night from Brendan to change the shape of the team at a time when we were ahead in the match and the tie, and largely successful in preventing Astana from getting near our penalty box.
Perhaps the defending at the free kick that resulted in Astana’s offside goal unsetteled him, perhaps he detected some anxiety at the back, perhaps he wanted to give O’Connell some support, but whatever the reason, it was jings-close to backfiring.
Within a minute of the change Astana lobbed a ball 50 yards from within their own half, and over our new back 3, resulting in the goal (well taken as it was).
Pretty much lost all finger nails from that point on. Fair play to the team for continuing to believe, and to Dembele for winning then scoring the penalty that changed the story of the night.
Thought young O’Connell was terrific. Brown too, not least given his team mates in central midfield largely decided to watch the game rather than participate.
Brendan’s got much to do to create a European-competitive team, and a short space of time to do it. He’ll be a hero if he gets us through to the group stage, and last night’s result will have a positive legacy in that respect.

European football guaranteed until Christmas.
No reasonable excuse for new faces not to come in ahead of the crucial play-off.
A common reason put forward for our failure to sign players before the European qualifiers is that our targets are holding out to see if we qualify for the CL.
I don’t think this fully explains our failure to sign players in good time for these season defining matches.
1. Look at the calibre of players we have signed upon qualifying for the CL – pukki, Ambrose, miku, lassad , etc. hardly guys who were able to pick and choose their next club (Ambrose was playing in a backwater on low wages, pukki unwanted at Schalke, lassad’s club had been relegated, these were guys for whom moving to Celtic was a no-brainer irrespective of CL qualifying results)
2. Plenty of precedent of players forsaking CL football with their existing club to sign for Celtic, even though Celtic were already out of the CL – simunovic last season, Viduka and Mjallby both in 1998 come to mind
There are players out there who could improve our team and our CL qualification prospects who would sign for Celtic just now. Maybe the manager has already identified them, it’d be good to give him the tools he needs, nip and tuck v Astana but the next opponents will be a level up again
No more fiddling about waiting to see who we can take on loan once the EPL squads are submitted at the end of August

Celtic shouldn’t have to rely on 4 or 5 new players every summer to navigate the qualifying rounds.
New players take time to gel and generally they have played poorly in the qualifying rounds. It’s better to rely on the team we already have. The champions of Scotland.
I don’t get this obsession with the assumption that spending a lot of money is the best way forward. It’s like some people ignore what they see on the pitch to pursue some agenda…

Armstrong started the game well, playing in a central position. As soon as Roberts went off and he was punted wide he disappeared. When playing in the centre he was making good runs into space in the final third but wasn’t receiving the pass. He suffered like our strikers do, we take too long to get the ball played forward from midfield and always seem to go for the square pass than attempt the more positive, risky, one. The reality is we need new midfielders of quality. The bulk buying of them hasn’t worked and they are all much of a muchness.

There wasn’t much between the two teams but over the two legs but I think we deserved to edge it. My reasoning is we created more away from home, a better final ball over there and we would probably have got another. Last night we controlled the game and should have finished it off at the beginning of the second half. We lost a freak goal in my opinion, not taking away the from the quality of the finish, which was quite unbelievable.
Winning the tie with the penalty and our new striker showing nerves of steel, I am only thinking about the positives.
The stand outs:
Brown – MoM. A captain’s performance. Some nugget between me was screening abuse at him when blazed a shot over. Ignoring the fact that he dominated the midfield, won the majority of the 2nd balls and 50/50’s, always showed, won, retained and used the possession very well.
O’Connell – A couple of slack passes apart and he gave away a free kick when he was got too tight and was rolled, he was magnificent. Great in the air, good on the ball and read the game very well.
Loved Griffiths and Brown giving Dembele loads encouragement before and after the penalty.
