Great result last night, and with the Israeli team knocking out Olympiakos it means two of our potential opponents have very low co-efficients.

Question – how come yesterday’s line-up was known and posted on here about 4pm? I’d have thought you’d want to keep this information secret for as long as possible.

According to your ill logic, Lee Naylor was the most racially abused Celtic player in 21st century.

  3. Go tell the Spartim on

We do really need quality midfielders asap, both Armstrong and McGregor, whilst having some attributes to their game, are far too lightweight with little awareness, regardless of where they play. Both are weak in the tackle, generally. They need to be more aggressive in their play,

Given our defensive injuries, it says a lot that we are concerned with our midfield.

Midfield is where the game is won or lost

  4. Loved last night’s match, brilliant atmosphere, great result.

Stuart Armstrong. He suffered badly for two reasons IMO.

When on the right, he made several penetrating runs into good areas of space only for Janko to dwell on the ball causing Armstrong to be stranded ahead of the ball.

Janko also adversely affected Roberts by dwelling on the ball and moving into Patrick’s work area, wide right.

When Paddy went off Janko improved greatly having the run of the right side as James tended to move in off the line. Armstrong struggled thereafter in the deadly left mid position, which by his body language and past form, he obviously does not enjoy and performs badly in.

Stuart Armstrong should never be left mid.

Janko and Roberts are not a right side pairing.

  5. Foxy, suggesting critics of Efe must be racist, after errors feature so heavily in his play, is an unusual assertion.

No way of telling if the sky in your world is a different colour than than in everyone else’s (euphemism). It may be, in which case, keep reaching for that rainbow. Or if you are trolling the blog.

Either way, it’s thin ice. Online comments about race should be handled carefully, please note.

  6. Delighted to be through as we all are. Brown was excellent, my MOTM. Griffiths done a power of work and Dembele looked like the guy we all hope he will be…. Think Brendan was correct to have a little pop at a section of the crown, Tierney getting barracked for a back pass in the first half was a joke…Hope someone gives Stuart Armstrong a few plates of mince n tatties to toughen him up a bit…struggling to see what he’s giving us

As soon as Roberts went off we lost a lot of momentum and didn’t really get in behind them.

Thankfully I think we have a manager who is picking up on these things and will adapt during a match,

  8. Had a bit of a day yesterday. 4 o clock flight delayed an hour , traffic on motorway and then train missed. Next train 20 past 7 . Blood pressure rising. No taxis in sight , nothing for it but to keep calm and relax. Scotstoun station a quiet place when your anxious. Any hooo jumped of train at queens street and a blue? Cab to paradise. Why is there always a queue at gates 91-103 when game kicks off. All latecomers like me ? Missed 1st 10 mins ,but the atmosphere in 139 was great until Astana equalised , then it was a bit fractured ,blood pressure rising again . All good in the end though , well done moussa . Wish it was easier but we are celtic.

Today’s adventure is van in kelvingrove park in the sunshine ? should be a good night.

Greenman will text , maybe meet up for a coffee and chat if your free I’m here till Sunday. :-)

  9. Agreed regarding the mass of average midfielders.

Last gripe. Leigh Griffiths is untouchable in terms of criticism, and I think his game has improved under Brendan. However, he missed two gilt edged chances to kill the game off last night just after half-time.

I know you’re not a racist but you came on here last night and suggested that Celtic players who make howlers don’t get in the neck from Celtic supporters as much as Efe does and that might have something to do with skin colour. Efe does, sadly, get a lot of abuse (he also, sadly, makes a lot of high profile errors) but I have never, ever heard a single Celtic supporter dislike Efe because of his colour.

It was an unworthy comment from you and you are trying to obfuscate by muddying the waters of what you said. Hold your hand up and admit that you got it wrong and let’s all move on and rejoice that Celtic are through.

  14. I wonder if the Astana CEO wishes the guy who gave the penalty away had been sent off earlier, as he should have been for his second bookable offence (actually about his fifth) with his tackle from behind on JF.

  15. Was pleased for O’Connell last night

Maybe we don’t need to sign Duffy? Kieran Tierney is now our most consistent performer. I’m hoping we’ve found another gem!

I think the money would be better spend in other areas. Central Midfield is probably a bigger concern with Rogic and Joe Hansen running down their contracts.

  16. THEGLORIOUSBALANCESHEET@9:15

I don’t think there is any reluctance by the club to sign players and I don’t believe they are using CL qualification as an excuse to stall.

If/when we do qualify, surely that is an incentive for selling clubs, agents and players to ask for more, knowing that our income will be significally boosted – it is therefore counter-productive, financially, to specifically wait till qualification until we bid for players.

Put simply, we struggle to sign players because of the crazy money available in English football.

Agents, players and clubs will ‘play their cards close to their chests’ in order to get the best deal available.

This is why sometimes we have to accept ‘second best’ and take a chance on certain players, or “projects”, as some term them.

It worked out ‘big’time’ with Ki, Hooper, Mathews, Wanyama, Forster and VVD – all picked up for small fees, served us well, and then sold on for the best part of £50 million.

Gordon, Lustig, Izzy, Johansen, Griffiths, Janko, Roberts and Erik, have all been good signings.

Boyata, Jozo, Ajer, Dembele, Christie and Toure, have great potential.

We have young players like O’Connell, Tierney, Ralston, McCart, Nesbit, Millar, Henderson and McGregor, stepping-up from the academy.

Yes of course we can draw up a list of those who didn’t make it – however equally there is a list of those who did and possibly will make it.

We must be realistic, there are thirty clubs from the EPL and Championship who can outbid us on transfer fees and wages – Ross McCormack being the latest example.

We must be smart, patient and realistic – actually we are not doing too bad for a club that can only get a few per-cent of the TV money ‘swishing around’ in clubs down south.

The two atrocious gaffes that could well have cost us the next round were committed by “Alana’s” hero, the white Craig Gordon.

I’m all for Craig Gordon’ but, like Effe he commits such mistakes in the most exposed position possible on the park despite their otherwise near perfect performances.

Not one word in your diatribe refers to Gordon nearly costing us big time last night never mind last week.

Like I said, thank God Craig Gordon’s white. The racists can vent their fury on Efe instead.

  19. If your looking in SHITov………………………………………………………..how do you like them chestnuts.

Celtic sign crap players of all colour.

For every Efe Ambrose there is an Adam Virgo and for every Koki Mizuno there is a Lassad.

We’re quite inclusive when it comes to rubbish players!

And guess what…and i know its has tremendous shock value for some.

But…and i feel distraught to say.

I dont think Craig Gordon is a great keeper…..there, ive said it.

    FFS

    Chill out

  24. My view on the Craig Gordon “error”: he did the right thing, but he could have executed it better.

But then Leigh Griffiths could have executed his shot at the start of the second half better. Fine margins at this level but we got away with…or as it is otherwise known as; scored more goals than the opposition….

  25. It’s easy to slaughter Gordon for last night if you think he blew it, but sit back and remember the last time you made a mistake without cause how you felt.

Well that’s how he felt last night, a Wee bit of support please, honest, he didn’t mean it.

  26. We give journos plenty of stick on here so only fair to say that Tom English has a decent report on the BBC sport website .

Thought Kieran did extremely well to resist the temptation to save their goal. A man down and one each could have meant curtains.

Delighted with the result , we can worry about performances later in the season .
