  1. 16 roads,

Ask your questions to those who wave the Palestinian flag at Celtic Park. Almost the entire Christian population, which predates the Muslim invaders by about 600 hundred years, has left our Holy Land. Some folk, too influenced by the looney left, have, imo, a far too simplistic notion of the real situation.

  2. Jimmibhoy big Steve came on for Kris Commons and the team was reshuffled, that’s my recollection Hail Hail Hebcelt

It is frightening how fast the professionals play , I went to a Davis Cup match between Croatia and Chile as it was being held in the sports centre in Porec, close to where we go in Croatia. It was Mario Antic playing. Giant of a man.

Croatia play GB in September when I should be out there so may get a chance to see Andy Murray.

Best of luck to Andy tomorrow.

  4. Jimbo67 with regard to giving teachers a hard time at St Matthews, Jim L is my brother, I think you are getting him mixed up with Tom.

STILL NEED THAT HELP ON MOUYOKOLO!

    ————————————————————-

He came on for KC and played centre back. Big Virgil moved up into midfield. Just saw the second half as was up in Holland bringing my son back to D-land.

  6. Is this the same “fishul” site that quotes:-

“Virgil Van Dijk also had a chance to header home just 60 seconds later but he couldn’t keep his effort on target. The introduction of Steven Mouyokolo in the final 15 minutes allowed Virgil to then push into midfield, and the Hoops continued to attack”.

    Then ends with:-

Subs not used: Fasan, Mouyokolo, George, Atajic

Which is why I need help!

I know Tom. Jim was in my class. Set off the fire extinguishers and danced on the teacher’s desk – Big Rosie’s desk- in Primary 5. I think I met you last at the Airport on the way to Seville!

I mind Mrs Brownlee – neither a bully a la some I remember or like Big Rosie a psycho ( albeit a great teacher if she liked you – and she liked me possibly because she knew my mammy). .

I wonder with these serve speeds nowadays. Obviously they are faster now but wonder if it’s like the measurement of speeds of fast bowlers. Lillee and Thomson were given average speeds of 70-80 mph whilst niwadays Shoaib/Brett Lee are only measured ‘out the hand’ at 90 plus. Roscoe seemed ludicrously quick but suspect Roddick is fastest I’ve ever seen

As for Andy tomorrow. I just hope he wins. That’s all . Unfortunately extended family getting together for this one. Not a good omen

just posted the stuff from the Oficial Site but by the time I had gone back to the site and copied it I found your answers.

    Good luck to Andy tomorrow.

I grew up in the era of Evert, Navratilova, Wade, etc and Connors, Borg, McEnroe, Nastase and another underated player called Vitas Guerilitas.

Also swedes such as Edberg, Villander and Nistrom.

Much prefer the old “serve and volley” era.

I remember “Scobie” Breslin well at the Ranch. In his first lecture to us first year students he began

“Gentlemen, what is the lowest form of humanity?”

No-one could give him the correct answer. He revealed the answer was a”a soldier”

He then went on to show how the endless drills are meant to demean the poor privates by roboting them as well as exploring the class system in the British army ( and this was some years before they arrived in Belfast). he did a weeklycolumn called “Screenings” in the Irish News.

I knew Larry Ryan in grammar school, a very talented drama lecturer.

Agus tá aithne agam ar Diarmuid!

He’s currently making some terrific programmes (as Gaeilge)on subjects such as Michael Collins for Radio na Gaeltachta and TG4.

  16. Jimbo 67,

For me Edberg v Becker contests rank, in the top 3 Tennis “confrontations” along with

Evert v Navratilova and Connors v McEnroe. Most of their matches were epic and just shade the likes of Borg v McEnroe and Graff v Seles.

Apologies to Boris for not mentioning him in my first list.

Sorry to say this and lots of folk will disagree with me but as far as I’m concerned Tennis as an “entertainment” was killed by Sampras, Agasie and the Williams Sisters.

  17. Wow! here’s a omen.

  18. Marrakesh Express on

Its perfectly feasible to compare Tanner 76 (85mph) with say Roddick 09 (150mph), as long as the three main factors are taken into consideration.

    1. Racquet design which I’d guess accounts for an extra 20-30 mph.

    2. Player physique…again my assumption is 4 or 5 inch height differential along with better fitness, diets and training programs.

    3. Improved coaching…Have a look at Tanner Connors or Borg’s service, compared to Federer Roddick or Murray, and see the difference in how the modern player exerts maximum power and accuracy.

My favourite all time player is McEnroe (wooden racket) but without all of the above improvements and benefits he’d be blown away by a Federer.

Before anyone says it a futile argument as sporting greats can only be of their time, try comparing Messi 2012 with Maradonna 1986. Different sport but almost totally equal in ability and effectiveness.

Just my opinion though and I realise books have been written on the subject. Great stuff for the pub debate too.

  19. Favourite uncle, fond memories indeed, the plaque which sat at the back of that bus was always stored behind our couch, used to stare at it lovingly, earliest memory of anything in my life was when,at the age of four, my father would teach me how to write out the sweep tickets,no wonder I grew up a fanatic, our entire household revolved around Glasgow Celtic.I recognize all the names you mentioned, take it you came from the “glesga side”,?

I too loved players like Gerulaitis and Nastase but tell that to a 25 year old tennis fan nowadays who idolises Nadal or Djokovic.

To say that tennis died when Sampras and Agassi began bludgeoning each other is to halt progress, but I know what you mean.

Having said that, if racquet and ball design eventually allow for a constant 150 serve, the game has a problem.

    jitbwp,

The fitness levels of tennis players playing for hours on end amazes me.Boxers too in the ring,in the proverbial lions den. Then we listen to the whining of football players and managers complaining about tiredness.Laughable.

  23. Mike in Toronto on

    Hello lads

Reading through the tennis discussion… I used to play/teach … never played against Tanner, but did play once against Jan Kodes (who won Wimbledon) … Guys I played with were serving faster than 90 mph…I can guarantee that Tanner was serving faster than that … he was hitting them 130 mph, even in the late ’70’s.

But, best ever …. has to be the Rockhampton Rocket … Rod Laver…Grand slam ’62… turns pro so barred until 68, wins Wimbledon, then wins his second grand slam in ’69…

If you are going for most Grand Slam titles, Roy Emerson wins it hands down (for men)… he had 28, I think… but NO ONE will ever catch Margaret Court … 64 majors, including a grand slam…. for some reason (I think because she wasn’t American…) her accomplishments are frequently overlooked in the press in favour of other less accomplished players…

  24. Mike in Toronto on

    Tricoloured

Not even close …I trained with the Canadian jr. coach when I was younger, and some of that crowd went on to have good careers (a few of the guys from that time did well in some of the grand slams, but mainly in doubles), but I was a level (or two!) below even those guys… so taught for a while, which paid some bills when I was younger, but I knew I wasn’t good enough, so I traded in my racquets for school books…

Still disappointed that we have not signed a goal scorer to support hooper. The midfield indeed needs new blood , I would prefer vic to stay for next 2 years. Think we could recoup his transfer fee in CL income , with out him we have Scott brown and commons and Sammi and that’s it.
