Wow imagine calling somebody a soup taker?
Soup-taker (Ireland) a person who has sold out their beliefs, referring to the Great Famine of Ireland when some Catholics converted to a Protestant faith in order to gain access to a free meal.
*Watching “who do you think you are” one night and the guest was Irish/American actress comedian Molly Shannon.
She is fiercely proud of her roots as her maternal grandparents were born in Ireland, with her grandfather being from Cloghmore, Achill, Mayo, however at the age four her mother, younger sister and a cousin lost their lives in a MVA so she didnae know too much of that side of the family.
So she was quite disturbed tae learn that even though she was brought up a Catholic her grandparents, Hugh and Bridget, religion on their marriage certificate was Church of Ireland, so over they go tae Mayo tae investigate this.
It was there that they learned of a desperate tale of survival, the marriage was performed in a Church of Ireland ceremony, despite Hugh and Bridget, and their families, being Catholic.
This happened during the potato blight when food was scarce and survival was a desperate, day-to-day struggle.
Edward Nangle, a Church of Ireland priest, brought food and supplies for the starving Catholic population of Achill, but gave preferential treatment, food, and resources to families that converted to Protestant Church of Ireland.
Many refused, and the cost of that refusal was often starvation, for others like Hugh and Bridget, they resolved to do whatever it took to survive, so they were married by Edward Nangle in a Church of Ireland parish on 22 February 1851, indicating that they had decided to convert.
Many who converted to escape hunger reverted back to Catholicism, and the same was the case for Hugh and Bridget once the Famine was over.
Incidentally samples of the soup plates and cutlery were shown and they were very small so it indeed must have been desperate times.
I’m pretty sure I would have done the same for my family. Still would have supported Celtic though lol.
After watching that show and having family who originated on the west coast of Ireland I see these “soup takers” in a different light.

When i was around 11 Celtic played away at Buckie Thistle in pre season.
After the game we waited for the players to leave so that we could get the programme signed (which I still have).
Bonner came out and brushed past me (fair enough) but then actually pushed my Mum out of the way so that he could get on the team bus.
Ever since Bonner has not been liked.
I was up visiting my parents at the weekend and we decided to watch the Jack Charlton documentary. When Bonner appears on the tele my Mum uttered her usual swearword every time Bonner makes an appearance on a tele since the Buckie game :O)
Cracking Charlton documentary, very sad in parts and with Bobby also suffering from dementia, some footballing family but the brothers were chalk and cheese.

Can’t comment on Pat Bonner’s character or what makes him tick.
Have never met him but I’d imagine he is a Celtic fan through and through.
Watched him play football literally hundreds of times.
During the double winning season of 87-88 he was awesome.
Hardly made any errors.
Made a handful of unbelievable saves which secured us points.
Most other seasons he was, IMHO, average.
And good for a howler at least once a season.
Admittedly, across 1986 – 1989 we also tried Latchford, Rough, McKnight and Andrews and couldn’t do any better.
Have listened to him a couple of times and found him to be uninteresting, uninformed and uninformative.
So fits right in at BBC Sport Scotland.

I don`t have any problem with those who did what they did to receive the soup ( although I have no time for those who `forced` them to do so).
I also have no problem for those who use the expression to describe the all too many ex-Celts in the Media who behave in the required fashion in the Scottish Media.

It’s well documented that Fergus didn’t want Lou Macari, or Andy Walker.
There’s a generally well held opinion that it helped form Andy Walker’s unhealthy obsession of being overly opinionated never in a good way towards his old club.
The rest like they do with Paddy Bonner, just think he’s a non entity.

The recent “don’t touch him with a bargepole” rhetoric directed at Roy Keane was/is just about the same as directed at Davie Moyes not so long ago. “He that laughs last, laughs the longest”. Well done so far Davie – hope you make it to the CL.
I apologise to Packy Bonner in using an ‘A’ instead of an ‘E’ – simple error which was bound to attract gratuitous pedantism – I was not disappointed – “never mind the quality – feel the width”
