  1. Wow, just been catching up, watching big jozo, some old footage of Billy, who was my first Celtic manager, and finally the Charlie Nicholas clip. So emotional. Everything about that winner today is just incredible, I love this club so much. I really hope that resonates for everyone and especially Billys family.

    CORKCELT on 27TH APRIL 2019 7:27 PM

From where we were in the darkest past – you are correct.

Oh that we could go back in time & properly appreciate Big Jock.

I too feel a little guilty at saying what I’ve said today, but I console myself with the thought that if Jock was here, sitting beside me & had watched what’s been happening to his club, then he might agree.

It seems that as I look back that Jock was cutting edge before that phrase had been invented.

He was a student of the game in its broadest sense. He knew what was happening in Italy, Spain & Hungary – what tactical adjustments had been made by folk we’d never even heard of before.

I think Jock would have been a product of his time in the modern era too. He would have seen that total football, of which he was an originator, was the norm in all great sides. That fullbacks were just as comfortable in the opponents box as their own, that movement, fitness, positional inter-changeability, transition play, two footedness, pace, blissful first touch and change of team shape during a game were all weapons to help become the best team around. He would embrace the technical stuff that forces players to confront their own lifestyle, diet & personal regime, and despite being forcefull man who took no nonsense, he would have been aware of any interractive developments that helped his side.

In other words, he would have been the Pep or Jurgen of his day & he would have done it with the total backing of the club – or he would have walked away.

Jock would tell you that he too stood on the shoulders of giants like Jimmy Gribben & Johnny Madden, Willie Maley & Jimmy McGrory. You learn from those who inspire you to unforeseen heights & his acolytes included Billy McNeill, just as Martin O’Neill learned how to manage from Brian Clough. The template has changed though & British managers are learning largely from continental managers & coaches now. Neil has never been exposed to that – he’s a product of the British management style – Clough, O’Neill and some others like Dario Gradi.

Neil may be a willing learner, but can we as a club afford to sign as manager a man who has so much still to learn about modern management. He may be at a disadvantage now because of the dsiconnect between what the players were used to under BR and what he is doing, but that’s not anyone’s fault. It’s just the way it is. At present the team is stumbling towards the end of the season with all of us, players, manager, fans all thinnking that it can’t come too soon.

For me, a big part of why Neil seems to be struggling to get the team playing convincingly is that he brought no staff of his own with him – as far as I know. BR left here with his own staff, the same staff he brought with him, but he was clever enough to knoww that he stooid a much better chance of being a success at Leicester if he had all of our staff with him. Neil brought no one & I assume the thinking was that this should make it easier for him to step into BR’s old shoes & carry on as before. We now know that this approach was flawed, because we had no idea how big the gap was between the BR & NFL methods.

I hope Neil turns this all round & we score plenty of goals in our remaining games while dazzling the crowd with our inventive play. I might also paraphrase Oscar Wilde though & say that this would be a triumph of hope over experience.

    Hope you are well

    HH

  3. Lot of whinging.

If Newco had gone 12 clear needing a point do you think they would be castigating the Manager ,who answered the call at short notice, and their players? no chance, you would hear no moaning above the sound of flutes.

Our team, and fans, were dealt a body blow,by a man we all placed our faith in,only to have our trust viciously betrayed,so imagine players having future progression plans etc in place to be treated this way.

Yet here we are moaning that there is a bit of a wobble, when in truth what was done to us should have had an impact bordering on catastrophic .

Yesterday I would have accepted 1-0 irrespective of performance. Same goes next game.

Neil might not be impressing a lot just now, but you are spot on, getting another point and hopefully a wee win on 25/5/19 secures the trophies… then if still in the job it will be his team, if not hired, then thanks for securing 8 (& hopefully the rebel treble treble :-)

  5. Hi Packy at 8:27. All fine here. The Rottweiler, who thinks she’s a lab, in infatuated with the new pet lamb and just wants to play with her all day.

  6. I hope the old bloke looking for a ticket near Billy’s statue got a ticket as he was shouting out. There were quite a few pockets of seats empty as well (likely family holidays). He was an elderly chap and obviously Big Billy mean’t so much to him.

  7. Ron67

If we are to play that way and getting the ball into the box as soon as possible we need a penalty box striker there to convert it

How many times does the ball fly across the six yard box with no-one there to finish it off?

Get Griffiths back as soon as possible

  8. Vote Cast for The Foggy Dew,if I had a second preference it would have gone to Raglan Road.

  9. Petec 9.00pm

Am sure you had a great day, back of 2pm my nephew textd “no5, 67 magical” the magical reminded me of some of your early hour posts as I think you use “magical” often … I know some don’t like Clyde SSB but I do, Hugh Keevins has been amazing this whole week talking about Billy, I think since he “retired” fae the papers he is far more open… his words about Billy & Billy’s wife Liz have been from the heart, and also Gordon Dalziel, who Billy signed for Man City has also been great… for somebody (me) who never saw Billy play it’s been great hearing about people who knew Billy sndcyhe stories on here have been amazing

One thing Shug Keevins said today after Jozo had scored … something along the lines that Billy wrote a lot of Celtic’s history and lived it, and it now seems he is still having an influence with the number 5 scoring in the 67th minute …

  10. CCE. @8.46

My choice too. Especially that version.

Anyway, been watching Barca playing against Levante A Barca win secured the title, Levante are fighting relegation. The game is at Camp Nou and Barca win 1-0 only because they bring on Messi at half time amd he scores on 60 minutes.

Whats the point caller? I have no idea however perhaps winning titles is not as easy as some of us think it should be. HH

  11. Gerry,

Hugh has been good to listen to, it was actually Aidan that said to me just after we had all calmed doon to a frenzy after the goal about the Time. Incredible.

Celtic Park is called Paradise for a Reason.

I’d take a 5-5 at the Temple of hate the morra right here and right now. ;)

  12. Just watched Barca win La Liga after toiling to a 1-0 home win over Levante. They looked ragged and nervous despite having hundreds of millions of euros worth of talent on the pitch and some of the most decorated players ever. In the end it took Messi coming on at half time to bail them out. Just shows you its never that easy.

  13. CORKCELT on 27TH APRIL 2019 7:27 PM

It is a very strangle situation, we are on the cusp of 8 in a row and then 1 game away from an unprecedented Treble Treble & yet we are not happy. I am not accusing anybody because I also felt let down at today’s performance.

However I do feel guilty for harboring such thoughts and accordingly have studiously avoided mirrors for the day. I also find myself being reluctantly drawn into the ‘ Lenny won’t do camp’ .

We are spoiled brats and winning Titles are now not enough we must win every game by 4 or 5 goals playing exquisite football. We deserve a massive kick in the arse and I include myself in the spoiled brats Brigade

    ——-

Not spoilt brats at all. Rather, objective in seeing that a team/squad assembled for so much compared to our opponents, should do so much better. An objective assessment that had sevco employed a coach as good as Steve Clarke, there may have been no 8IAR. An objective admission that we shouldn’t get humped so badly and so often in Europe.

An objective desire and ambition to build from a position of strength. And to punch our weight.

  14. Petec 9.42pm

Celtic are unbeaten domestically in 2019, David17 just mentioned Barca winning 1-0… even the “best” teams in the world sometimes struggle to get the job done … once this league (8 or 20 @ Beatbhoy) is won our players will play with a bit more freedom, they have been on the go since June’18… 25th May 2019 the shackles will be off, by the way Hearts could try n stay in the game and maybe get a chance or two but I will be on FIVE-0 to the good ghuys…

  15. Well done the hoops against the best manager around. A nervy show with some obvious weaknesses , no width for example. Great that Jozo gave his shirt to the family. Met Cesar once when he came to ML5 to visit a housebound Celtic fan in 1970. A thorough gentleman.

Hail Hail ..could have been worse !

  16. weebobbycollins on

    Did we win today?

Do we need just one more point to be champions again, for the eighth time in a row?

Do we have a cup final to look forward to?

    And a treble treble also?

And yet some seem so down. Shame so it is!

I understand their anxiety re the quality of football being played at the moment. We are grinding out results rather than cruising to victory. It looks like Rodgers’ abrupt departure has had a negative impact on certain players, which in turn has affected the overall squad mood. Some are ‘confidence players’ – sinclair, forrest and possibly others – and perhaps they miss the man-management style of BR…

However, it’s now up to Neil to get them over the finish-line, one more point plus a cup final win and that’s it. Job done!

Big Billy often said that there was something magical about Celtic…today was proof of that.

This should be the Billy McNeill title and his wife Liz should raise the flag next season…

    Hail Caesar!

  17. Managing a team to the ‘joy’ of 0-0 isn’t managing its Drilling – I wouldn’t consider Mr Clarke over any competent park the bus merchant – they are 4th and may not even hold that position.

  18. Anyone with the pressure of actually having to ‘win’ is a different proposition – the difference between Looking at a mag and actually getting a date.

  19. And just to add to the songs – I was lucky enough to see Eric Bogle sing ‘No Man’s Land’ – the definitive version by the guy who wrote it. It is not an Irish rebel song, it is an anti war song based on the futility of WW1.

So given that Aberdeen try harder when they play the zombies, are we in the midst of 8IAR tomorrow?

  21. Very Well done today Celtic

Yes poor performance- but – 3.very important points

Scored by our number 5 in the 67th minute, made today even more special.

    Hail Hail Cesar

  22. Norrie – I agree

History will record the three points

In1967 I watched us draw 1-1 with a relegation bound Stirling Albion – trying telling that to the youngsters these days ‘ they won’t believe ya’ :-)

  23. Comments on Lenny and loan players

    Benkovic, just returned from injury

Meanwhile Simonuvic gets into team, and defence been doing extremely well,

Why should we change this ?

    Weah, away today with USA

I was glad to see Christie return before the Aberdeen wipeout

Many others have wanted a Rogic back in team

So who does Weah start in front of ?

Burke – lighting quick, anyone remember his last game for us, and his 1st, 2nd or even 3rd touches when he had the ball ?

Is he to replace Odsonne, who has been scoring critical goals for the team ??

Now today – I see Sinclair getting a lot of stick

For me Forrest and Lustig combination was extremely poor today

Neither were any better than Sinclair, and I could name a few others into the list of poor performers today

    But

We managed to get 3pts, so

Kilmarnock played a basic 4-4-2 today, and closed out all space we were trying to find

We need to find a way to play against this type of team set up

Constantly ten men we had to try to get through

    Hail Hail Cesar

  24. CRC 22.36pm

Re the Dandy Dons “trying” harder against Seethin Gerrard’s team.. nobody has pointed out after the first game of the season (1-1) the rookie manager stated “we are a class above Aberdeen” …. and he wonders why a team might try a bit harder … somebody better tell him Aberdeen haven’t won in Govan against any clubs for about 20yrs until he arrived :-)

  25. Celticrollercoaster......Hail, Hail Cesar on

Slippy G has been a class above all season

  26. Incidentally- I thought Killie should have a penalty, when Brown pushed the player on our box

I would have been wanting one had that happened to one of our players

    But

We should also have had a penalty when Rogic was wiped out, even though ball had been played by Rogic

Who was it that got a penalty recently for this, and sure it was Columm who awarded it ??

  27. CRC 10.55pm

Again “our” media actually unwittingly massage these superstar managers egos … long may it continue … Gerrard isn’t the fullest sandwich in the picnic, must be something to do with the name Gerard :-)
