I take it Brendan had Leigh Griffiths tied tae a chair with a Celtic scarf tonight so that the wee scamp couldnae annoy thae nice visitors with any o his naughty japes!

Good start to the night with a bit of grub and a few drinks with ACGR and Delaneys Dunkey.

Very solid performance tonight; plenty of chancers. Could easily have been 5 up at half-time and into double figures by the end of the game.

Ntcham was very good and I was really impressed by Benayu in his little cameo. We are miles ahead of where e we were last year and will continue to improve. For me, Rosenberg hold no fears in the next round. I expect to finish the tie in the first leg.

We had no failures on the pitch tonight; some were better than others but overall, a comfortable;e night.

Oh, and just to mention, I thought the songbook was apposite this evening!

  3. Just in from the game. Springfield Road a car park for 45 minutes then the police escorted the Linfield buses past the stationary Celtic traffic. Pathetic. How hard would it be to turn the traffic lights off at the end of the road and wave us through?

Game was very easy. Could have, should scored 4 or 5 in each half. Ntcham and Benyu did very well but we were playing a mob with 10 men behind the ball, from just outside the box. Still a pub team mind.

Harder game next Wednesday but probably easier to escape post match as fewer spectators next week depending on ticket prices!

Wee BGFC – straight from the UEFA site:

The play-offs will decide the last ten places in the group stage.

    How does it work?

The clubs with the five highest coefficients in each route – this applies to both League and Champions – will seeded and will be drawn against the other five teams in that route. There will therefore be ten ties in total. Any changes or further restrictions will be announced ahead of the draw.

    When are the ties?

The first legs will be played on 15/16 August, with the returns taking place on 22/23 August.

    What next?

The ten play-off winners will join 22 automatic entrants in the group stage. The draw will be made in Monaco on Thursday 24 August.

So we can meet any of the 5 lowest seeded teams who make its through to the play-off round. Celtic will be seeded if when we make it through.

I understand some boys watched the Rosenborg Dundalk games and the consensus was we don’t have much to fear, but still they are halfway through their season and will be no mugs. Still if we do get through the Legia Warsaw stand out as the most dangerous unseeded team, so the games to watch are

    Partizan (SRB) v Olympiacos (GRE)

    Salzburg (AUT) v Rijeka (CRO)

    København (DEN) v Vardar (MKD)

Hapoel Beer-Sheva (ISR) v Ludogorets (BUL)

Slavia Praha (CZE) v BATE Borisov (BLR)

I expect Olympiacos and Salzburg to cruise through so looking for 2 of Copenhagen, Ludogrets and Borisov to drop out to move Legia into the seeded group. Beer Sheva showed last year they are another that could be tricky but at least they are a known quantity. I still feel qualifying for the group stages equals a terrific season and anything we do should we get there is a bonus from pot 4.

  7. I’m not a qualified coach but I can tell you this – even against poor opposition you can look for the basics in players you’re not familiar with to get an idea of technical quality. First touch, passing, speed of thought, do they give the ball away very often, movement – on that basis we look to have made good signings. We also look like we have a very good squad.

A few changes to the way we play and we should take care of pur next opponents.

  8. A bit of a canter tonight, but no real failures in the team. A few more days training will hopefully fine tune our finishing, which in part, was our only letdown. We could have doubled our tally tonight. Going solely on the results against Dundalk, I see no problem in the next round. I would think we will be too strong for Rosenberg.

I thought we took a step back 15 years or so with the songbook tonight, I know why, I just wish we could have risen above that, and sang Celtic related songs all night.

Anyhow for a couple of reasons I’m glad the tie is over, and we can look ahead.

Many thanks to all those who offered their commiserations earlier, your thought were much appreciated.

THE GREEN MAN SAYS SACK THE BOARD:10:34pm-when he comes back,I will convince him he doesn’t exist,by ignoring him:)Philosophy eh:) very funny:-))))

  10. Thought we were great tonight. Some very promising stuff from Ncham in particular.

Rosenberg will be tricky. But we look much better prepared than last year.

Songbook was pretty awful – we should just have laughed at them, it’s obvious They Are The People Going Nowhere Fast.

  11. Still think we could have done with a game this weekend ahead of tough game v Rosenborg. 45 mins for the probable starting XI, 45 mins for the rest of the squad/youngsters.

  12. Starry, I’ve heard this from a couple of sources today, freedom to independently approach something or other!

I don’t know if we have ever been in a better position to qualify, given the quality of the team and management, the continuity from last season, and the less daunting Champions route. And still I expect some nervy times ahead. Win the league and qualify for the group stages for me is always a sensational season.

ps I’ve made my point on the singing before and got crucified for it so no need to rehash it, but many share your point of view

We could do with a game but even friendlies don’t provide that competitive edge. With the league cup group stages we have effectively brought forward the start of the domestic season. The 2 main reasons for doing should be it’s better for the fans to watch games in the summer, and probably more importantly to help our teams in Europe. Yet the European qualifiers don’t play in the league cup group stages so it is no benefit to them at all. In fact with St Johnstone and the diddies from ibrox going out in the first round it actually hurts the European qualifiers as they won’t be as sharp as the rest of the teams when the league season starts.

    Mental.

Start the league campaign on the 1st weekend of July. You then have 6 weeks not competing with the EPL which should increase viewing figures, which should increase sponsorship, which should increase the value of the tv deal, as well as giving Scottish clubs a better chance to make some Progres. Such an obvious solution to a major problem.

Got back in about half an hour ago and had a number. As I was puffing away I was thinking how dull and mind numbingly ordinary that mob were tonight. On and off the park.

This tie has turned out to be a couple of extra pre-season games for us,a bonus chance to prepare for the next round without any real threat of coming a cropper. The real tests start now.

I thought we done ok considering how early in the season it is.Olivier looks like he could be the real deal, very composed on the ball,an ability all top players possess. We could have landed another gem here.

It was good to be back at my favourite place on Earth and despite it being a no contest, good company and a few shandies made for another enjoyable night in Paradise.

Brendan said last year , due to number of games, coaching sessions were minimal, maybe using the next week for this, kinda agree with G67, 1 more game might have helped

    Let the people sing…….

I felt it was an outpouring in response to the bigoted bonfires of vanities that played the latest part in the racist abuse of our most talented player, Buckie throwing becoming an Olympic sport for Team NI and the police-supervised singing of the famine song through the streets of Glasgow the other weekend.

The polis often use Arnold Clark hire vans to supplement their fleet.

What I thought was strange tonight was that after the game several police vehicles blocked off the northbound carriageway of the Glasgow Eastern Regeneration Road next to Celtic Park so that traffic from the Dalmarnock direction could not access Parkhead and the Gallowgate.

I’ve never seen them block off that road before after a Celtic game.

Why leave it there? Norway is an independent country with the added benefit of oil revenues. She operates successfully within the EU as an EFTA member. Her independent government spends much more of her GDP on grass roots football.

Scotland is a lily livired nation of cowardly subservient unionist dogs following the English lemmings over a cliff to economic hell.

Its not rocket science why Norway prospers and we dont.

  27. GuyFawkesaforeverhero on

Well played tonight, Celtic. Already looking forward to a tricky 90 minutes next week.

I’ve no idea what the stewards thought their posturing at the foot of the stairs in the Jock Stein stand, at fulltime, could achieve but I suggest they have a rethink before repeating it. Celts won’t tolerate such behaviour peaceably.

Really enjoyed the story overheard at the ground earlier, some Scottish parties on pilgrimage at Lourdes this week held a green’n’white party night tonight.

  28. Starry plough and Doc so are you saying the new cover story is that Peter can’t be bound by collective responsibility now? What a crock.

Bit like the newco old one guff. Peter had to be collectively responsible until it didn’t suit him?

The 1500 or so linfield/sevconians who soiled Celtic Park tonight were there for 1 reason & 1 reason only,to create as much havoc as possible as they knew they were gonna be well pumped.

Should never have been given any tickets imho.
