  1. Couple of thoughts….

Don’t know Derek McInnes from Adam but has always struck me as a fairly level headed guy, at least in terms of the occupation he is in.

He has to be considered a successful Aberdeen manager in the context of the 8 or 9 years preceding his appointment. There is no doubt he has consolidated them into a team expected to be among the best achievers in Scotland. Prior to that they were a laughing stock.

Success however has been limited to consolidation with only sporadic uninhibited excitement. To finish second is an achievement, as is the number of cup finals and one League Cup win…..but….

I wonder had Stevie Clark been appointed to Aberdeen what their prospects would now be? McInnes has been good for Aberdeen but looks like he is bereft of tactical agility.

He looks like a lesser manager when compared to Steve Clark, Neil Lennon, obviously Brendan and possibly even Levein!!!!!

    ……however we will see…..

Sensible and objective view of Aberdeen v Sevco (IMHO)

Morelas sending off was harsh – plenty on here going to tell me letter of the law etc but I always try and judge with the simple question – what if that was Celtic – If OE was sent of for that I would not be happy

Huns look better organised with 2 new centre halfs and a centre Mid trying to protect them not saying they are great but they are better than they had last year

Windass ran his socks off this shows the team spirit is much better than last year

Hard to judge them as playing with 10 men changes everything

They will not be as big a shambles, but they are not good enough to challenge us

Aberdeen were terrible not sure what options McInnes had but they never pressured Sevco all day

GMS was poor so was McGinn so was most of the taem

Scottish football is in for a an exciting – who will be second – campaign Hibs, Edinburgh Huns, Sevco, Sheep and Kilie will all take points off each other

In England they talk about the top 6

In Scotland we have the second 5

Horrible game to watch both teams rubbish

Aberdeen just got put out if european compitition on thursday evening after playing extra time against decent team before heafing back up the road to play game sunday at noon with 4 defenders out. Servco played on thursday evening at home against an a half decent team and had full squad to pick from.

Maybe stevie g wants to get some perspective, a class above ffs. wee bit respect would be best cause player and managers remember shite talk.

Br talks a lot but contrast his talk after win yesterday, good team, honest team, work hard, organised etc… That is respect

We know there’s a lot of scouts, a lot of talk, the Celtic bids for John McCinn. I cannot believe, if it’s going to cost £3-4m, when I see some of the players down south going for double and treble that, how none of these English teams are going to pay that. It’s an absolute snip, that, in modern football.

He’s powerful, he’s dynamic, he’s got everything you want in a midfield player. He gets into a tackle. What are they seeing down there? What are these clubs looking at?

Is it almost snobbery, saying they want to go and spend £30m on a player rather than looking at Scotland and saying, look at the quality he has for the money?

    It absolutely baffles me.”

  8. As a supporter i can say aberdeen will be poorer this year due to loss of mclean and christie.

Would not be against allan, johnston heafing up there for the season.

we should leave mcginn at hibs till next season if he is willing to wait for pre-contract or give 2 million on eboua on season long loan.

*Didn’t the Hibbees have a tough game in Greece on the same night trying to hold on to a 3-2 lead and came away with a credible draw against a side who had 6 yellows and 1 red and yet here they are 3 days later three up and seemingly coasting.

‘We were much better than Aberdeen’ – Gerrard

    FT: Aberdeen 1-1 Rangers

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard told Sky Sports: “We were magnificent. We were very good with 11 men, and even better with 10. Aberdeen had no idea against us. For 93 minutes it was perfect.

“It’s frustrating to lose the late goal. Every single player to a man was fantastic. Aberdeen only had one idea and it was to lump it into the box. We were much better than Aberdeen today.

“I’m very pleased walking away from here. It was a chance to come here and show you’re better than your rivals and I thought we did that.”

On Alfredo Morelos’ red card, he said: “When you kick out you give the referee a decision to make. But, he’s been barged twice before it quite clearly. The official who spotted the kick didn’t spot that. That’s the disappointing thing.

“We’ll take our time [over whether to appeal].”

    ——-

Funny how Stevie told Sky Sports they were in a different class to Aberdeen but the BBC chose not to report that.

    Fancy goalie quiz?????

    1) Who became the first Celtic ‘keeper since Ronnie Simpson to play for Scotland at Wembley?

    2) In a Drybrough cup game against Airdrie( 1974) which Celtic goalie ‘ threw’ the ball into the net?

    3) Which keeper on his Celtic debut saved a pen. from another keeper?

    4) Who is the goalie that had his spot kick saved in Q3?

    The alternative sensible view

Morelos ‘kicked’ the Aberdeen player in an off the ball clash which is in most games not just Sevco amounts to a red card and just because Morelos normally gets away with his attitude doesn’t mean every linesman won’t radio the ref.

    Windass fell forward flat on his face when running at full speed, he felt a tug on his shirt? (using your Sevco/Celtic analogy barometer ;

Would Lee Griffiths have gotten it?

They look better organised with two new centre backs during the close season and in the opening game every year, teams not just Sevco generally look tighter when they start with a new manager on a lovely summers afternoon for football.

The sending off suited them cos they only had ten men and had to play on the break against an Aberdeen team everybody knows are sh8tye going forward trying to score.

Aberdeen were as usual awful against Sevco, but they kept plugging away and eventually scored a good equaliser despite the funereal shortbread tones when it beat McGregor

  17. Expect the media to go full throttle in trying to sell McGinn before English transfer window closes.

Two impartial BBC reporters start the ball rolling.

Will be a busy week for mssm praising Greek teams and screaming about refereeing miistakes robbing sevco of their rightful place at top of SPL.

  19. Mahe the Madman on

Had a butchers at AEK there for a wee while , trying to figure roughly what level they are at.

As far I can tell they are a rung below us. Some notables,,,

Out of a squad of 31 only 9 are internationals.

Their tv money was 40 mill for entire league this year and that deal will not be renewed

Stadium size approx the same with crazy fans who like to scrap

Their average player age looks older than ours

Their manager is literally brand new , just started July 1st

Amazingly they have only played one single friendly although against decent opposition. ( Galatasaray ) but they made a raft of subs around the hour mark so this tells me most of the team that will start got an hour.

They won 3-2 but looked extremely vulnerable to set pieces.

Defence,,,at 6’1 and 6’2 the central defenders seem to be formidable and can be described and solid . One has over 70 appearances for Bologna and has just joined on loan so is new to the surroundings. The other is in his fourth year at the club . Aged 25 and 28 they will prove stubborn no doubt.

The wing backs,,,the right back who started was mostly played as a central defender last season by the previous manager and Ive read was in excellent form. Its possible this is to nullify us or just sharpen up the defence in general but whatever way you take that is doesnt seem as if he will be marauding and leaving gaps. Having scored a solitary goal for the club I doubt he crosses the half way line during normal play.

The left back on paper looks nothing special at all who only got the gig because he was free and at 29 brings some experience. Thats my reading of it. However this coming season is his last under contract with the club so its possible he will be out to impress anyone and everyone. That hasnt worked before though as he tends to be released not renewed. Im not expecting to be impressed .

Starting strikers,,, one of them doesnt seem to have the pedigree to play for us for example he cost 200k and is a winger or forward who has never hit decent numbers in his whole career .

The other though,,now he is dangerous . Marko Livaja cost them 1.8 million and has a 10 million buy out clause. He has played in some decent teams and leagues ( Atalanta / Rubin Kazan )

He seems to like the big occasion and hits the net regularly in them and is currently described as being in sensational form. He is the one we need to watch.

They also just brought in loan a very skillful striker ,, Lucas Boye ,,and he was given half an hour so I guess he might start but Im expecting him to come off the bench. He will need to be closed down quickly when he comes on. Looks to have bags of talent and a killer pass.

Midfield,,,They play with two deep sitting midfielders and together they both sit and protect. Their goal stats back up the fact they dont come forward.

Wings,,,They , just like us ,love to use the wings. One of their wingers Bakasetas also hits a beautiful free kick and make no mistake this will be a danger. He is left footed though plays on the right and being a former striker he loves and is encouraged to support the front two. His return of one goal in five ( 10 in 50 games ) might seem average but he will need to be nullified

On the left wing Mantalos ( the captain ) has had somewhat of an injury ridden few years. He missed most of last season with a cruciate and only returned in the final game but for a few minutes as a gesture. Being captain I can only imagine he wont ease himself back and will go flat out. A part of me wonders if it is wise to throw him straight back in after only 64 minutes in almost 10 months but he did mark his return with a goal.

Manager,,,was a good defender in his day but has done nothing of note in the dug out and is on a 2 year contract only. The punk has already run his mouth about us saying we are just another challenge and they are ready to deal with us. He does admit he would have liked more competitive games under his teams belt.

They seem a counter attacking team that hold 6 back and give the 2 forwards and wingers license to roam. Im not expecting the newly returned left winger to roam much and feel he will be told not to anyway to try and help curtail James Forrest. I believe Jozo will start to help take care of long balls and Ajer can do that fine. No I certainly see their play going through their right hand channel where they might think Sinky doesn’t help much and KT can be doubled up on or at least keep him pushed back and there is a big part of our game gone.

A tight affair where they will be delighted to only lose by one and know their fans will turn up at home. However we are just that bit more quality in general and it should show. Celtic will also know this is their best chance and lets put it to bed here and now and then enjoy the spectacle of Athens if we can. Target their left hand side and it should bring joy. They will likely get it to their right quick.

Prediction,,,2 – 1 . A result that yes you are happy with but holy crap its gonna be one of those ones over there.
