We passed the ball quicker, we created more chances and we scored

    more goals.

    Nought to fear from Malmo.

We will mash the Swedes. HH

Been home from the game for half an hour.

Sorry to say I missed the first and last goals.

Road from Dunblane to Castlecary was a nightmare.

2 hours from Perth to Celtic Park and couldn’t leave earlier. Heard the roar of the crown from Leigh’s first about a yard outside the turn style.

I left early. Something I don’t as a rule do but having parked at the Forge and having a drive home to Elgin and. 6-2 shift starting meaning I’m up in 3 and a bit hours, I reluctantly left with a couple of minutes of regulation time left.

As I started the car the BBC radio Scotland commentator was celebrating Bergets second.

It puts a big downer on the night and makes progress a wee bit harder.

Was still a brilliant night. I thought Broonie and Ambrose were immense in the first half at least.

    Griffiths was just superb.

There seemed to be period s where we collectively got scared to tackle. Boyata in particular was guilty of standing off their attacking players.

Real shame about Lustig. Let’s hope it’s not too serious. Time for Saidy Janko says me. Although I’ve no problem with Fischer in the position.

I’ve defended Efe till I’m blue in the face but he really seems to be getting more error prone.

On the way home I set the sat av for home and the feckin thing tried to take me to Edinburgh. I’m heading along the M8 following its orders sayin”whit”.

Finally found my own way through Airdrie and Cumbernauld.

This tuechter is now tired and better get a bit of sleep.

    Night and hail hail

  3. Just in, managed to catch my train! Not read back, and not read much today, but a huge thank you to everyone who helped me to get to and back from the game today!

Obviously scunnered at the result with the last minute goal, was a real blow. But I had a great time at the match.

Thanks to Eddie for the ticket, Gary and Ryan for a great time during the game, and helping me catch that train! Gary you are mental, and I would watch a game again with you any time any place!

Sorry for ‘hoggin’ the blog a wee bit yesterday n today, but thanks to everyone who helped me.

Result was not good, but we can play better, but could and should have put the tie, never mind the game, away before half time. So I know we can get a draw or even win the game over there, but they will need to play better. It’s certainly not over, they are going to have to come out and beat us, and we should be able to make that hard.

Anyone know the times of the last flight back from Sweden……….

    ;-)

  4. skyisalandfill on

Not Ambrose. I’m getting worried about masell. Broonie and Biton.

    Excuse my wuckfittery.

  5. Just watched the game. Thought we were poor but still managed a win. Disappointing to lose that goal at the end. Thought Biton was at fault with a poor challenge from the corner. He would have been withdrawn when he was down injured near the end under normal circumstances and should therefore not have been challenging in the box at the death. Grasping at straws here but that is our worst performance of the season so far. Surely we will do better over there.

  6. i wish someone would bid something (anything) for James Forrest. I think he has been given long enough to show he has something to offer on a consistent basis. He has consistently failed to deliver.

Naivety at times. Good luck, bad luck blah blah blah.

    That’s Celtic.

67 and the years that followed until the mid-70’s are a long time ago.

We were kings then, times change though – the team has processed and improved from this time last year, big time.

    We’ll get there though.

    The Berget character?

Didn’t get much of a chance at Celtic in all honesty.

Mind he scored a beauty against United sure at CP.

    It’s pressure.

There’s very little time to blood footballers, prospects new signings. It’s always a rush. From the SMSM to our own support.Either hit the ground running, or after about half a dozen games yer gone. McGregor the exception maybe.

So easy to criticise the environment where we find ourselves domestically – but here – our rivals and counterparts aren’t mugs. A lot of these other SPFL teams will punish you if you happen to have an off day. I’m sorry to say, but they are well drilled and motivated.

I concede there is a disparity resources wise – there are sharks everywhere none the same.

  10. BSR

Earlier I suggested no recriminations and then I had a time out to reconnect with reality.

    Now…after that time out..

Ref. personal responsibilities for their goals (which is always contentious in a team game..)

For their first we had a corner, they broke and Broonie was our covering last man. He had time to clear his lines but elected to try a clever header to his left. It fell to them, Nir did his knee at that point trying make a difficult challenge to stop their attack. He failed, they crossed and Berget scored.

We had a great start to the game and could easily have been 4 or 5 nil up at HT.

They changed their tactics in the 2nd half, pressed us at the back and unsettled us.

When we got it back to 3-1… well we needed cool heads and bigger picture thinking on the pitch. We kept pushing for another goal though and that led directly to their second goal.

We badly missed Griff when he went off & badly missed SA when he went off. Neither Ciftci nor GMS impacted on the game for us. Tactically, Griff and JF moved much more across the frontline than their replacements did and our fresh legs worked less for us than it did for Malmo.

Losing Lustig and then Bitton (effectively) made it imperative that we see the game out with 10 men and walking wounded.

At Celtic we love players with passion but sometimes we play with too much passion and not enough guile.

My simplistic MOTM-OMETER is based both on what I see and how often a players name is mentioned by the TV guy.

JF got mentioned a lot but produced very little. Brown got mentioned more and produced a bit more although he had an amateur 2nd half. Joe Hansen had an assist in all three goals but at other times it would be 10 minutes and his name wasn’t mentioned at all.

Lustig was great as were VVD & Dedryck. Izzy was like a man possessed in the 1st half but remains very turnable neat our goal line.

My MOTM was Leigh Griffiths. His two goals, his fabulous movement across their back four and his willingness to run for the team were fabulous.

Their second came at the death when we looked tired. Despite what I’ve read here, Malmo are a good side who really want the group stages like we do. That makes them formidable opponents regardless.

If we can win the tie over two legs then we will have really earned the right to be at the big table.

We are better than last year and are improving game after game. The tie is still in our hands.

Mikael Lustig and Nir Bottom are worries and Saidy Janko will have one game to get up to speed with Charlie Mulgrew in the Bitton role.

When has such a win left you so deflated.

You cannot be critical of our defence without being equally critical of the midfield.

Then again – nobody can say that the game was lost in defence or midfield, because the simple fact of the matter is this – we actually won the game, believe it or not.

Question is this, for the away tie – do we engage in a free for all – start with LG, GMS,JF and hope to decimate the turnips on the counter attack?

Or do you start with four in defence – five in the midfield with the one target man

  12. 16 roads - Celtic über alles... on

    in attack?

We are winning the tie now as it stands, you see?

    It’s up to Celtic.

    We have the options.

    Venceremos.

    HH .

  13. Adrenaline still flowing judging by the unusual number of late night posters.

I’m 25 minutes into the replay and we are 2-0 up, playing fast attacking football.

The game is too too stretched.

Lustig has just put a great ball along the 6 yard line but no takers.

It’s was a high tempo start and I feel that maybe took a lot out of us leaving the tank empty for late in the game.

    On the substitutions:

Leigh had been on the ground with a knock. He was given time to run it off and perhaps he was impeded by it.

I don’t know why Armstrong was lifted. Maybe Eonny wanted to introduce fresh legs. That was the only substitution that wasn’t enforced that I could see.

Was it too soon to introduce Janko or Fisher for Lustig?

I just checked and neither one was on the bench. Charlie was the only alternative. I suppose that would have entailed shuffling the defence around.

No more rambling I’m off to bed come half time.

I think we may drop points on Saturday with there being a bit of a let down after tonight and with a number of players either injured or rested.

  14. Regarding our CH We are unable to let VVD go at present as he is our only Center half

Boyata has joined up with Efe as the new bome scare

He might play his way out of it, however man city fans wanted him to do the same and in one report groaned at the mention of him in line ups

Sorry Virgil unless we have at least one centre half , you can’t be sold

  15. Ok not quite the result we needed losing that last minute goal. Players know that they need to keep it tight. I see it was 60/40 possession and we deserved to beat Malmo. Just need the finish the swedes off next week. Keep the faith . Hail hail.

    Good Morning Timland.

    You can’t defend a 3-2 lead in Europe,we shouldn’t try to,treat

the game on Tuesday as a one off winner takes all,if we pull it

off we will be well out of our depth along with half of the side’s

in the CL group’s,that’s just the way it is.

Thon Malmo manager…a real garrulous gobshite

Maybe not …he’s happier than we are this morning

Lack of investment is killing us …VVD will be sold …then we will be bereft of high quality players

Our signings this window have done nothing to improve the team …..in fact we’re now short a RB …still no LB and our new striker is atrocious …if that’s investment we’d be better playing the youngsters ..

Who we going to sell next year …maybe Johansen will finish the season as he did last year …on current form he’s poor.., maybe Gordon …

Our signing policy which is predicated entirely on resale is flawed … You need to uncover young talent and hope to sell them for profit …..since VVD no signing has come near that

Buying DU players in a job lot is embarrassing ….they’re a mid table SPL outfit who’ve won bugger all for years

How about we sign players for the here and now …just like the teams with much lower budgets than us who routinely scud us in Europe

Too much business not enough football …..

2-nil lead inside 10 minutes @ Celtic Park, European football.

    Nobody knew what to do.

    It’s as simple as that.

It probably would have been better if we’d have lost any early goal – cue the entire arena going ballistic and roaring the team onwards to a 3 or 4 – one victory.

We are going through to the CL proper.

    Regardless.

  19. Good morning friends. The skies are again clear over East Kilbride and the future looks very bright to me.

We were 30 seconds away from a very acceptable result. But winning at home can never be bad, no?

They need to win next Tuesday. We don’t.

Watched the first half, said I would settle for 2-0 as I left for work. And I would have.

Arrived at Oxford just after the whistle-game not on the radio-so asked a fella who had Talksport on how we had got on.

His reply-those two goals have killed ya,mate.

Since I already knew about the first via an update on R5,plus our 3rd-I switched it over as McLeish was on-I spent all night thinking we had drawn 3-3!!!!!

Which might make me the happiest Celtic supporter on the planet, for a change.

Anyway, reading back I see Izzy amongst others getting it in the neck. In the first half,I saw Lustig,Brown,Boyata, van Dijk and even James Forrest covering our right when Malmo attacked.

I didn’t see anyone but Izzy covering our left, though granted he stays upfield too long sometimes.

Usual “experts ” having a pop at Celtic after a VICTORY in Europe. As the positive Jobo says, they have to win, we don’t. Easier said than done though. Back to the more positive Twitter for me.

Not sure what I think of last night !!!

Happy we won annoyed with their second goal ( notice Berget did not celebrate ???? Respect for RD ?? Not sure)

Next week is a different game – they need to score it changes everything – pressure now on them

I sometimes think the away games are easier (well less pressure) for us and I think we can score

Big moment for Janko RB and I think Mulgrew at LB

If we cant gub malmo after being 2-0 up…at home..its not good.

    Horrific defending.

Ciftci…i said at the time, not good enough imo.

Also…you would have thought Scott Allen was a barca player with all that hype.

In reality, he cost buttons, and prob wont get a game.

  24. Absolutely devastated at losing that goal last night. We will be really up against it now to qualify. These guys are very good at home and have Markus Rosenborg coming back.

The biggest issue though will be who to play at right back. Efe was terrible last night. At right back his defending is poor but his attacking is atrocious. He is forever receiving the ball on the touchline stopping and turning back (the safe option). However this completely negates our ability to attack down that side. This destroys our balance and means we have to focus down the left (where Izzy has his own issues). RD could go with Fisher or Janko but I would really worry about either of those two defensively. I would probably go with Fisher realising it’s a huge ask for him.

Looking at the positives we still have a lot of very good players who desperately want to play in CL (Brown, Gordon, Bitton, VVD, Armstrong, Johansen, Forrest, Griffiths and even though he didn’t play last night Commons). That has to give us some degree of confidence. Delighted for Griffiths…..up until last night there was always the question could he score in Europe. I think you could argue now that he’s in the same class as Hooper (probably our best 2 strikers since Larsson, Sutton and Hartson). Ciftci was incredibly poor. Worth keeping in mind Scepovic scored 2 goals in EL group stage last year…..Ciftci looks well out of his depth based on last night (in his defence he has had very little game time due to the suspension).

    Fingers and toes crossed already!!

  25. 67 EUROPEAN CUP WINNERS

Personally, i thought he stopped to stare and was looking the Celtic support right in the eye to say……that’s what i am capable of.

Hes one of many that get trashed on here and possibly other sites(only read cqn)

There’s quite a few wearing the jersey now that are getting the same treatment.

Celtic players getting tore to bits by their own fans.

Cannae help but think that’s counterproductive but there you go…..that’s just me.

  26. Anyway……i cannae wait for the 2nd leg.

    Half-time and we are ahead.

Should be further ahead, but im confident we will regroup and finish the job over there.

  27. 67Heaven .. CHALLENGING THE LIE ..I am wee Oscar...... Ipox belongs to the creditors on

Our players seemed to get tired late on…..if we are trying to build up match fitness, then the CL team should be played in every game to assist in building up the required fitness / sharpness ?…..

  28. The Green Man

    ‘Silly substitutions’?

I saw Armstrong signal to the bench he had to come off.

Griffiths went down and said in interview last night he’d taken a knock.

Lustig carried round the perimeter on a stretcher.

    ?

In terms of replacements my criticism would be on the basis that I’d have Fisher and Janko on the bench before Efe.

That aside what more could or should have been done re changes?

We were one play away from a really useful result. That’s what pi&&es Me off.

With the benefit of a little hindsight now, had we come back from being 2-0 down after 10 minutes to win 3-2 then morale on here would be much higher this morning. The biggest disappointment is that it could have been so much better. However, we are not being asked to achieve anything particularly outlandish next week, simply to avoid defeat against an average Malmo side that got a bit lucky last night.

If we cannot manage that then the EL is probably where we belong. I am still quietly confident that we will progress though.
