  1. Very deflated after last night’s result, although I guess that at start of qualifiers, you would have taken a ‘go to Malmo’ and draw to qualify.

My biggest disappointment is the sense of déjà vu with RD as a manager, where we have an advantage in Europe and we blow it, by lacking variation in our tactics.

That must be the fourth or fifth time we have been ahead in Europe, and stuck with the ‘one club golfer’ school of tactics, which cost us qualification last year.

Before the game, I was worried about Boyata and unforced errors, and his decision to try and chip a pass to Forrest in the 93rd minute cost us possession, which we never recovered from.

Again, Boyata is a serial offender, who has now repeatedly given away possession, and cost us goals.

He may well come good, but we need performances now, not in 9 months.

There were some very good signs last night from Forrest, Armstrong and Griffiths, but overall, I got the impression that the Malmo coach had Deila well and truly sussed.

The comment about fitness was particularly poignant, as fitness is supposedly one of the strengths of Celtic under RD, but clearly the opponent thought otherwise.

  2. Ah Celtic, why do you do it to me

I’m in an awful mood today and my workmates are takin the brunt of it

  3. I would favour resting as many as possible against The Arabs.

My Team would be Gordon Janko/Fisher, Mulgrew, O’Connell, Boyata, Johansen, Rogic, Allan, GMS. Commons & Stokes. I like both Izzy & Efe but they are not top defenders, they get away with it for the most part in the SPFL but are more exposed in European games. I think it would be worth trying Efe in midfield but at present that is an area where we have a surplus of players.

I believe we can beat/draw with Malmo next week but am worried about the loss of Lustig.

  4. Frail and naive has been our way since the start of last season:

    Legia

    Maribor

    St Johnstone

    ICT

    Ross C

  5. We scored 3 goals with a lot of the play. They score 2 goals with not as much.

In European football, you have to maximise your opportunities.

    Welcome back Kev J.

If people think that we don’t need another striker, they are deluded. We have downsized. That – together with dreadful scouting – is why we have Cifci.

Empty seats will be even more prevalent if we fail next week. Few enjoy the EL in comparison to the CL.

What ever occurs, VVD will be sold. That money must be reinvested.

May Bitton be available. Otherwise we are in trouble.

  7. squire danaher on

Is it just me but is it any coincidence that Efe Ambrose seems to have gone backwards as a player since that ridiculous chant about him has become a staple every time he touches the ball?

  8. macjay1 for Neil Lennon on

Many of the players are Ronny`s.

    Our new signings are Ronny`s.

    The tactics are Ronny`s.

    The substitutions were Ronny`s.

    Where does the buck stop?

Efe? Izzy? Boyata ? Lustig? Ciftci? G.M.S.?…………any of the other scapegoats?

Big Jock`s mantra…….Never ask players to do what they are not capable of.

  9. traditionalist88 on

Why no Commons? His experience and shoot on sight mentality could have brought more goals. Many consider him our biggest threat.

And Stokes is a far better player than Cifcti.

It will be particularly irritating if we go out the CL knowing we had better players available than the ones we played.

Poor use of substitutes last night – GMS struggled badly.

If we start in Sweden the way we started in Azerbaijan with Cifcti isolated up top the tie will get away from us.

  10. Lastly,

Man Utd score a late goal at home to make their away game a lot easier. We on the other hand concede a late goal to make our task a lot more difficult.

Forget about money. Man Utd as the home team were looking to attack at the end of the match, while we end up defending.

  11. This season frail and naive;

    Kilmarnock

    ICT

    Malmo

Anyone who genuinely believes that we will win this tie needs their head examined.

The team just cannot see out a game.

At 2–0 we should have closed the game and looked on a third gosl as a bonus.

Think we will lose 2-0 in Malmo

  12. Here’s something interesting (not really) and quite surprising.

Malmo’s best passer on the night was Oscar Lewicki with 87% completion rate 1% ahead of our 7th best passer Dedryck Boyata.

We can beat them away, and I think their need for a goal will open them up for us.

  13. Captain Beefheart on

On current evidence, Stokesy is better than Cifci.

Commons gets us through these games. Start him but who would he replace?

  14. Morning all.

    Disappointing weather wise down here.

Disappointing is how I feel about the result last night. We should have won with a few to spare.

In spite of what a lot of folk have been saying on here, I don’t think we have been downsizing. Some of our football so far this season has been excellent.

Maybe TBB has a good point about the 20 minute spells we seem to play in. If we DO play like we did last night for the first 20 minutes next Tuesday, we should win the tie.

I thought James Forrest showed last night (and against Kilmarnock) what he can bring to the team. He and Stuart Armstrong were destroying them down either wing. I would keep both wrapped in cotton wool for the match in Sweden. I would also play Tom Rogic on Saturday, as he, imo, is the only one who can play like Nir Bitton, our most important player.

Our defence is the major worry, of course. Too too often, one or other makes unforced errors. The lhad Fisher has to start on Saturday and we need to buy another LB. Hopefully, Boyatta will gain some kind of confidence.

Any word, by the bye, on the seriousness of Lustig’s injury?

Still hopeful we can go through.

  15. Captain Beefheart on

Efe was finished in defence after the Juventus game. He has ability but no confidence. We could give him one last chance in midfield.

  16. thomthethim for Oscar OK on

    Árd Macha,

It is possibly due to the old factor of being well established into their season that gave Malmo their fitness advantage.

We stated at a blistering pace, which they couldn’t live with, but it left us running on empty in the last ten minutes.

I believe tiredness was behind Brown’s inexplicable header to the posse of Malmo players, instead of the simple nod to Izzi.

Add the absence of Lustig, plus Bitton got injured in a tackle long before he went down.

The worry for next week. will be how much time for recovery time we have.

I felt a bit uncomfortable at the pictures of the crowd dancing and partying long before the job was done.

If there is any truth in the home crowd pushing the team to a victory, as is often claimed, what effect does a partying crowd have on the team?

Can’t have it both ways, lads.

Given that Commons has been used later in games recently, I think the enforced substitutions may have played a part in his not getting on.

  18. Árd Macha

We may have had a lot of the ball but Malmo had 10 attempts at goal to our 7.

Both teams had 4 on target. Their goalie looks weak to me. I would rattle shots at him from all angles.

So, in spite of conceding the fewst number of goals ever in the SPL we’re crap at defending? Right ye are.

The problem isn’t normally in the SPL where we’re up against dross evrry week. It’s a different story in Europe tho.

  20. Interesting UEFA Stats on Boyota.

    Celtic pass completion rate: 1st Half 84% – 2nd Half 85%

Boyota = 86% for total game – made 62 of the Team’s total 359 completed and 72 of the Team’s total 426 attempted (134 passes in total).

    VvD = 95% – 36 of 359 and 38 of 426 (74 passes in total).

    Bitton = 92% – 45 of 359 and 49 of 426 (94 passes in total).

So is it fair to single out Boyota’s passing ability???

I’d have had him on first, instead of GMS.

All about next week now – could be explosive. I think we are by far the better team, our defensive errors are a bit of a leveller.

All well and good but doesn’t account for unforced errors. Boyata and Ambrose…both are prone to passing straight to opposition players under no pressure whatsoever. If you are liable to this…get the head up, pick out Brown or Bitton or the closest player in green and white and make sure it gets there.

I watch Aberdeen and Hearts and they dont have players who do that.

  24. LiviBhoy,

It didn’t seem that sort of match, where they had more attempts, but the stats don’t lie. They obviously were more economical.

Commons is the only guy who rattles in shots but I’m not sure he has the work rate for an away tie.

    Árd Machai

  25. Don’t you remember all the Malmo shots from 25/30 yards that were nowhere near goal?

Was delighted to see the Swedish players and fans premature celebrations at full time. 2-0 to Celtic next week will bite them on the erse.

    Hail Hail

  27. thomthethim for Oscar OK,

While you’re point about fitness and injuries is well taken, you can’t blame fans for celebrating when we scored our third. They weren’t proclaiming the game or even the tie was won, rather just a natural outpouring of joy.

Professional players who take their cue from fans singing and dancing?

    Not in my opinion CSC

Work rate is all well and good but you also need guile. Ciftci can work hard for you for 90 mins and achieve little. Commons can put 60 mins of graft in and have at least 1 shot on target, create chances, keep possession and gain free kicks in useful areas, take free kicks and have a huge contribution to the team.

Kris not having the work rate for an away match is a myth. Kris is a quality player one of the best in our squad.

I recorded the game and watched it back when I got in last night. Although leaving the ground I was gutted and it felt like a defeat, we are still in the lead in the tie overall and know what we need to do over there. A couple of stupid mistakes cost us, don’t really want to slate any players for the mistakes. They will know themselves where we went wrong, just make sure we don’t make the same mistakes again.

    It was a 50 / 50 tie going into last nights game, it’s still a 50 / 50 tie as far as I’m concerned.

Time for the fringe players to show what they can do against Dundee Utd now…..

I remember going to see very good Celtic sides throughout the eighties were usually we got put out of Europe at the first or second hurdle (3 rounds when we lost to Forest).Whilst being dissappointed at losing a d going out of Europe it was never the end of the world as we all realised that we were never gonna win a European trophy in those days but we still had some great times and memories from that era.The point is that now everything is about money…in this era we are never gonna win the Champions league or the Europa league but even i find myself getting worked up about the money available through qualifying for the group stages and it annoys me as this is what football has become its not about glory any more its all about cash and its not right.

Agree with your point on Berget, Ronnie gave Wakaso more playing time when he shouldn’t have, never a football player.

Was rushing home after work yesterday, to get a quick turnaround, to get back out to CP and turned on the news at 4:00pm in the car, Heart radio. After the news, which was read by a Scottish newsreader and mentioned an update on the Bin lorry tragedy, so I assumed a local summary. They then went onto Sports, another Scottish announcer, first, the football news….Sevco travel to Ayr to meet in the pub team cup, then…nothing….straight to the Ads. No mention at all of the Champions league Qualifier that was to be played later that night with a crowd ten times that of the match at Ayr……..Is Heart Radio a re-hash of Real Radio that ignored that plonker steve mckenna’s jibe about Jock Stein? Last time I listen to it.

Some really good summaries – RWE, Saltires en Sevilla, Livibhoy, Screen73 and others.

    Yesterday I posted this:

Won’t be won or lost tonight. Fancy us to win, but not sure about the clean sheet, although I don’t think it will be crucial in the end. 2-1 tonight, 1-1 away.

    ——

Other than it being 3-2 not 2-1 everything else stands.

Need to show the concentration levels of the Qarabag game and be a bit more street-wise. Game should have been killed off at 3-1.

It’s Malmo that has to figure out a way of beating a team that is better than them.

Yes I agree but what it says to me that for all our possession we do not shoot at goal enough. Just my thoughts anyway.

Their goalkeeper looks a weak link to me.

    Let’s test him next week.

Just one word of caution I believe both their first choice strikers were out last night and most of us know about Rosenburg. I can understand their reaction at 3-2 FT. They believe they are much stronger going into next week. Never in their wildest dreams did they expect to score 2 without their talisman and his mate.

Hopefully next week we can mug them.

I see the masks that have slipped are still down.

I see the manager getting the blame for players getting injured, hence his subs.

LG got a knock, SA signaled to come off, ML got crocked.

But to blame RD for this shows how far the mask has slipped.

Any blame lies with the suits, the suits who rake in their huge bonuses, while the coach has to scramble around for projects, freebies and loans.

We are not run as a football team anymore, we are run as a business first and foremost, a far cry for the biggest majority of football teams in the world, but the board are never wrong.
