The pitch in front of the east end of the north stand has never been the same since the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony.

Despite a lot of money being spent on the state of the art Desso hybrid pitch, no improvement.

    that is 100% right.

Yeah it’s a bit puzzling, am I taking pish or against the huns the pitch was fine?

That Buckie game would have degraded the pitch that’s for sure.

  4. Access v Ownership

I posted a couple of days ago that I thought that we would bring in a couple of loans before the end of the window, I think that is now the most likely scenario.

There is resistance by some to bringing in players on a temporary transfer, why? ; aren’t all transfers really temporary these days. When a player comes in on loan, he is our player for however long the deal is – one season, half a season. He joins the squad and is considered on merit.

It seems most prefer a permanent transfer and much has been made of recent long-term deals agreed with a number of our players. There are of course differences. It makes me think of the recent trend of using streaming websites to listen to music, a basic choice between access and ownership. Why buy and store one thousand records, when you can have access to one hundred million songs on line….unless of course you are a collector? Football clubs are employers of players, not, collectors of same.

So what does it mean when a player signs a long-term deal, say five years, as Cameron Carter-Vickers has just penned?

There are three parties involved in any/all dealings – Player/Agent/Club(s)

What does it mean to the player?

In the above example, CCV has guaranteed himself at least £10million in wages over the period.

It doesn’t mean that he will definitely see out the entirety of the contract and become another Billy McNeil, of Paul McStay.

Football is his job, and so like any other player he will always look to maximize his earnings.

What does it mean to the player’s agent?

It means they now have a more valuable client and if there are other interested parties in the near future, it will likely mean an even bigger salary for the player.

What does it mean to the club?

It means, at least in the short-term, it has a happy player who feels that they are fairly remunerated.

It means that there it is less likely that the player will leave for free (Bosman), as adequate time should be available to sell, if need be.

It doesn’t mean that he will definitely see out the entirety of the contract.

What does it mean to the supporters?

It stirs up arguments and discontent

A key difference between permanent and temporary players is that in the case of a loan we definitely know when he will leave, with permanent player, we don’t know when he will leave, even if he has a long-term contract. We may, or, may not, get a decent transfer fee; but as we know to our considerable cost, a permanent flop ( McCarthy, Ajeti & Barkas – best part of £20m inc wages) is a very expensive liability, a temporary one is usually not.

    Outlook

I believe in future in order to bring in the “quality” our manager craves; temporary transfers will become more attractive. We find it impossible to compete in the ‘ready-made’ quality end of the market. Of course we will still keep our current model running in parallel, i.e. identifying prospects and selling on at big prices, and in addition striving to promote young home-grown players, an objective that Brendan has been referring to pointedly in recent interviews,

“It is a stance he takes even as the pitch now appears in poorer condition than when in 2018 then manager Brendan Rodgers convinced the club to invest £1.5million in a desso hybrid surface of the type common in the English Premier League.”

“It’s just this time of year,” said Lennon of the scarred patches of turf that have caused alarm among sections of the club’s followers. “The weather’s inclement. But it’s not stopping us from playing the type of football we want to play. It’s maybe no different from other years. I’ve played on worse, put it that way.”

    I’d tend to agree.

We should be assuming our competitors will strengthen and act accordingly.

Consoling ourselves that X or Y opposition player is injured seems a damning indictment of our transfer policy.

  8. CELTIC40ME on 28TH JANUARY 2024 6:42 PM

Yes, we deservedly beat the Huns. The league though consists of 34 games outside of the Glasgow derby and so far, we’ve dropped 4 more points against the rest than the Huns have and we have a much more difficult run over the next couple of months.

I thought that given the snow on the morning of the game, the pitch was decent enough.

The amount of rain over the last few weeks along with low temperatures does not help. Grass doesn’t grow unless overnight temperatures reach about 7/8 degrees C.

Our local golf course has been unplayable for most of the last fortnight, so I wasn’t expecting pitch to be great on Saturday after the hammering it took against Buckie.

However I am concerned that the particular area of the pitch I mentioned earlier never looks as good as the rest, even when the pitch is looking its best.

  10. AN DÚN on 28TH JANUARY 2024 7:41 PM

How can we have a much more difficult run than them between now and the end of the season. That makes absolutely no sense at all.

I wasn’t having a dig at your comment, I did think you were making a tongue in cheek comment.

One of the statements in the WhatsApp to which Kev Las Vegas referred suggested that PL’s failure to authorise cash was the reason for the state of the pitch.

The author of the WhatsApp claimed to be a Celtic supporter and my comment was related to items such as that and the authors of done “Celtic” sites I have read recently.

Once again my gripe is at the Bhoys group and their obsession with singing about “deid” sevco figures. The Bhoys bring passion and atmosphere to their corner of the ground, but let themselves down with this oft repeated song. We have lots of Celtic related songs, and this one, I believe should be dropped from the repertoire.

    100% correct.

  15. In this strange season if we played the rest of our games away from home form to date suggests we’d finish 4 points better off than if we played them all at home

The “difficult” away games appear to be easier than the home ones

If the work effort we seen on Saturday is repeated in the weeks ahead then points will be dropped.

    ……

Nothing wrong with effort yesterday from my vantage point , the game turned into a struggle that can happen….. we stuck at it and won the game.

I guess the fans need to get used to that over a season we can’t play well every week. The chances of everyone being happy are zero ; with modern media era chirping in everyone’s ears the amount of discontent is embarrassing ….. best just to ignore all the noise and enjoy the games ( even if some turn out to turgid affairs , it can happen from time to time)

    Guilty your honour.

I had read aWhatsApp going around about various Celtic figures / issues. Quite unpleasant reading and it made a comment regarding Mark Lawwell’s conduct.

KevLas Vegas made a reference to a whatsapp going the rounds.

I made the comment o the effect that if I were Mark Lawwell and the comment had been about me, I would be inclined to take legal action.

Lucky Cody was responding to my post.

I wouldn’t repeat the content of the WhatsApp I read as I thing it was a disgraceful thing to say about the man.

  20. *SENTINEL CELTS PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2023-24*

*RESULTS FROM GAME #31 CELTIC 1 ROSS COUNTY 0 (A. JOHNSTON)*

    Good evening, friends.

Contrary to our form over the previous 4 or 5 games yesterday’s game really was dire and, for me, the poorest performance of the season. A flying start was welcome but failing to score either of our penalties, coupled with bernardo’s squandered chance meant we had a nervous, unentertaining afternoon albeit that we did come away with a deserved 3 points.

Not really much more to say from yesterday but with our wee 3-game away run to come we do need something to reignite our season, and quickly.

We have now played 31 competitive games, enjoying 20 wins, 4 draws and 7 defeats, scoring 64 goals and conceding 30.

My thanks to the 48 who voted this time around. And it game me some consolation to find that no fewer than 16 fellow voters picked the same 3 as me – the top 3 as well!

The total votes cast for each player are as follows, with my own nominations asterisked.

    Hart: 5

    Johnston, A: 17

    Carter-Vickers*: 39

    Scales*: 33

    Bernabei: 3

    McGregor*: 37

    O’Riley: 4

    Bernardo: 0

    Abada: 2

    Kyogo: 1

    Palma: 0

    Nawrocki: 3

    Kuhn: 0

    Johnston, M: 0

    Turnbull: 0

So, Cameron picks up his 4th MOTM award; but the first time he has done so in a winning team! His 3 previous wins were Hibs (A) 0-0, Atletico Madrid (A) 0:6 and Lazio (A) 0-2. See what a 5½ year contract gets you!

And so, the players receiving POINTS for the game against Ross County are –

    Carter-Vickers – 5 points

    McGregor – 4 points

    Scales – 3 points

    Johnston, A – 2 points

    Hart – 1 point

The overall positions after 31 games played are as follows –

    77 – Scales

    74 points – O’Riley

    52 points – McGregor

    38 points – Carter-Vickers

    28 points – Palma

22 points – Bernardo and Kyogo

    20 points – Oh

    18 points – Johnston, A and Maeda

    16 points – Yang

13 points – Hart and Taylor

9 points – Johnston M, Nawrocki and Turnbull

6 points – Iwata, Lagerbielke and Ralston

    5 points – Hatate

4 points – Bain and Holm

    3 points – Forrest

    2 points – Abada

0 points – Bernabei, Frame, Haksabanovic, Kelly, Phillips, Starfelt, Tilio, Vata and Welsh

    *JANUARY PLAYER OF THE MONTH*

The Player Of The Month award is based simply on the total votes received across all games played. January was curtailed with the winter break and saw us take to the field for just the 3 games – St Mirren, Buckie Thistle and Ross County. We won them all 😉.

In 3rd place with 67 votes (from 2 games) is Calum McGregor and the runner up on 117 is Paulo Bernardo. But the winner of January’s player of the month with 132 votes is Matt O’Riley.

So far the monthly winners have been –

August: Kyogo (4 games, 164 votes, average 41)

    September: O’Riley (5 games, 259 votes, average 52)

October: Scales (5 games, 243 votes, average 49)

November: Scales (6 games, 191 votes, average 32)

December: McGregor (8 games, 281 votes, average 35)

January: Name (3 games, 132 votes, average 44)

We next travel to Aberdeen for a 12.30pm kick off next Saturday, where a win would see us extend our lead at the top to 8 points. There’s yer incentive!

  28. Transfer news: Premier League clubs not spending in January 2024 window

    Last updated on

26 January 202426 January 2024.From the section Premier League

Has the Premier League spending bubble burst?

The past three transfer windows – January 2023 and the summers of 2022 and 2023 – have each set new Premier League spending records, with £100m players being traded and Chelsea dominating the headlines.

But with one week to go until transfer deadline day on Thursday, 1 February, just 13 players have been signed by Premier League clubs, with eight permanent transfers and five loan deals, while disclosed fees amount to £45.4m.

At the same stage of the winter transfer window in 2023, there had been 26 signings made by Premier League clubs, of which 21 deals were permanent.

Of the fees that were disclosed, top-flight clubs spent at least £352.2m, before add-ons, by this stage last year, with seven days to go.

Top-flight clubs would go on to spend a record-breaking £815m in last season’s January window. That included Chelsea’s £107m deal for Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez, from Benfica.

More than £275m was spent on deadline day alone, while, according to financial services firm Deloitte, the total spending of Premier League clubs last January was 90% more than the previous winter record of £430m, set in 2018.

That January window followed two record-breaking summer windows, with £2.3bn spent in 2023 surpassing the £1.9bn spent in July and August 2022.

Are Premier League financial charges a factor?

Charges hanging over Nottingham Forest and Everton at present – for alleged breaches of the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules (PSR) in their 2022-23 finances – may have sharpened minds.

No club will want to risk a 10-point deduction like Everton are appealing against for a previous breach in their accounts up to 2021-22.

BBC Sport’s Alex Howell reports that Chelsea, with a £1bn outlay since the Clearlake ownership group took over the club in May 2022, are more likely to sell in this window than buy to balance the books.

While Newcastle, despite being one of the richest clubs in the world through their Saudi Public Investment Fund backers, posted a £73m loss for the 2022-23 season and players such as Kieran Trippier, Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron are linked with moves away from Tyneside this month.

    Premier League’s January moves

West Ham’s loan signing of Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City is one of the only major Premier League deals.

Sheffield United made the first move of the window on 5 January with the loan signing of Villarreal’s Chile striker Ben Brereton Diaz.

Tottenham have made two of the more eye-catching deals of the window so far, bringing in 21-year-old Romania defender Radu Dragusin from Italian side Genoa for £25m and Germany striker Timo Werner on loan from RB Leipzig until the end of the season – the 27-year-old’s move includes an option to be made permanent in the summer.

Both Burnley and Brentford brought in a player on loan from a Premier League rival, with Ivory Coast striker David Datro Fofana making the switch from Chelsea to Turf Moor and Tottenham’s Spanish defender Sergio Reguilon ending a short spell at Manchester United to fill in for the Bees’ injured left-back Rico Henry.

Reading vice-captain Tom Holmes, 23, made the leap from League One to Luton Town for an undisclosed fee, though the defender has returned to the Royals on loan.

Brighton, meanwhile, signed two teenage prospects – Romania winger Adrian Mazilu, 18, completed his move from FCV Farul after originally agreeing a deal last summer, although he subsequently joined Vitesse Arnhem on loan, while 19-year-old Argentine winger/full-back Valentin Barco arrived at Amex Stadium from Boca Juniors on a four-and-a-half-year contract for a fee of £7.8m.

Aston Villa signed Serb defender Kosta Nedeljkovic from Red Star Belgrade for an undisclosed fee, but the 18-year-old will remain with Red Star until the end of the season.

Manchester City have signed Argentina Under-17 midfielder Claudio Echeverri from River Plate in a similar deal, and Sheffield United have brought in Republic of Ireland Under-21 defender Sam Curtis from St Patrick’s Athletic.

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

    I blame the Celtic board.
