Celtic well below peak condition, Hibs and Best of the Rest title

325

With one week before Champions League qualification gets underway, Celtic play their third and final warm-up game against Swiss’ St Gallen tonight.  Three games is not sufficient to get players anywhere near peak fitness, but next week’s opponents, Sarajevo, have played only twice since their season ended in May, their final game, a defeat on Sunday.

While we may be well below peak condition, at least we should be better prepared than the other guys.

There is always some trepidation when an unknown helicopters in to buy a football club, but most Hibs fans will be happy that Rod Petrie has been emptied out of the club today as he and Sir Tom Farmer sold their shares to a Peruvian – surely the only man from Peru called Ronald Gordon.

Hibs were the last club to win a trophy before the Celtic monopoly began.  They are now debt free, have a suitable stadium and competent backroom team.  They are also not Hearts, so have a great deal going for them.

What is not clear is why a Peruvian has bought into Scottish football or what he intends to do with Hibernian.  Putting a challenge into Celtic will be difficult, but if he can work the South American market successfully, Hibs could be in the mix for the celebrated Best of the Rest title.  Which would be fun to watch.

Well had enough of the training exercise, about time for subs. Anyway hate friendly games off to watch the pony tail cup?

  2. Why is Neil so reluctant to make substituons?

    It’s a friendly.

    Mad.

  3. 16 Roads, It’s all about the European game, result tonight counts for nothing,

How can you miss a competitive game on account of a card picked up in a friendly?

Absolute joke that we have not addressed the full back positions ahead of the UCL qualifiers. Every year fly by the seat of our pants blindly into the qualifiers hoping next year it will be sorted. One more year and we will be happy …….

  6. CC – I understand it’s a meaningless game.

    Neil made a substituon.

He doesn’t make many, similar to Martin O’Neill in that respect.

If things needed changing, Brendan Rodgers changed it there and then.

Truly awful strip we’re wearing today.

Like we had to take what the sports shop had left after everyone else were kitted out.

    …….

Jozo nearly got away with it – damn that VAR, but no complaints about the red.

St Gallen brought on 10 players at HT apparently, while we kept the same eleven – now ten.

Gutman is now two games in one day..

While watching the game there I was thinking about what you said earlier as it resonated with my own thoughts, re Johnny Hayes.

On tonight’s performance so far I can see many moaning that he’s giving away passes etc…

We’ve seen it so many times.

What I’ve noticed more is the number of interceptions he’s made and when he’s covered for other players.

Slack passes in a pre season game can be coached out. Instinct, attitude and determination are a lot more difficult to coach.

    Great squad player….

Jozo happened while I was typing this

Jozo… No… Rash, crazy, dangerous… I thought that had been coached out of him – that’s the first footcyiuve put wrong since NFL came in tho big man…. No more.

More ‘heeders like Cesar’ performances than rash heedless chicken.

    Buffering like it’s the nineties.

    Picture disintegration a constant

Back up player as bad as the primary player.

  11. Game done, Objective achieved, tough 90 minutes played by bulk of team who will play in European opener, Nothing else matters,

  12. Bhoylo83, looks a bit like the QPR one we had, our latest IMHO, is lots better.

  13. Probably better off watching the woman’s football.

That African football is brutal as well.

I go to sleep now and wake up when the Brazil Argentina game starts, hopefully a few goals in that one.

    Maybe this explains it.

  15. Well that was the very definition of a pre-season warm up.

We are addicts so we watch this poor fare.

Neil ket the side unsubbed until after the 75th minute mark because he wanted the players to have a game in their legs before they faced Sarajevo.

In that way it was a good test against a similar standard team.

In most other ways, it was a poor watch.

As always, it’s only the competitive games that count.

All I’ve seen of the game is the Jozo sending off clip. I had to watch it three times before I figured out how it was our guy who got sent off. I’d like to apologise to the referee, his mother and his father.

    no it isnt,

we could play with the under 18’s full backs and we will go through.

  18. That was some hard watch, and as bad as watching a pre season friendly.

We’ll be hearing fitness excuses till this time next week, but that was utterly dire.

Nothing in midfield absolutely devoid especially in the tackle, nada created for 90 minutes, Forrest playing on the wrong wing and Shved as disappointing on his unnatural wing also. Both Celtic full backs in a race to see who was rubbisher than the other. New striker required for the SPL never mind Europe, and only Mikey Johnston nearly got pass marks.

This was a game we saw dozens of times last season.

    Keep the chequebook out Celtic

We looked poor. We’re a week from a competitive game and this is clearly the team Neil has in mind for it. Ralston & Hayes very poor, a one-paced Brown and a missing Forrest. We looked overpowered in midfield and Neil kept the shape and personnel unchanged. Blwoing out our arses with 20 left.
