I like the below-radar way Celtic have operated this transfer window. Mikael Lustig arrived early without much of a murmur and Rabiu Ibrahim’s trial and signing went through with casual understatement, while Jaroslaw Fojut completed a pre-contract agreement before many of us had even reached his Wikipedia page.
Most of the headlines surrounding Celtic have been in connection with English clubs wanting our players, closely followed by public declarations of ‘I’m going nowhere’ from the players in question.
Compare and contrast with the situation over the city. Almost daily Nikica Jelavic has to deal with a completely different scenario his club have placed him in, today telling STV, “The manager appreciates me and likes me, but I know the club are in a difficult financial situation and if they decided they needed to sell me, I would accept it.”
If you bump into Nikica tell him he’s talking rubbish. His club were recently bought by a billionaire, they have no financial difficulties and they are reliably informed they are going to win their tax case. Rangers players telling the media that their club are in a “difficult financial situation” are miles off-message.

SDM did not spend a tenner to our fiver, he spent £25 to our £1 or, if the tax case is lost £120 to our £1.
You have totally underestimated the sheer scale of what was needed to match never mind better their spend. Add to that the knock on effect of the desperation to win at any cost to keep them alive and by any cost I mean the remarkable rise in honest mistakes in 2009/10 and the backlash in 2010/11 when Celtic finally stood up for themselves and you have a better idea of what Celtic were up against (not to mention the constant critcism from those who did not dig deeper.)
I am not saying mistakes were not made, I’ve told PL to his face what one was (and he has listened) but when you consider what the club was up against, the Board who are part of the club, deserve a bit more slack than you have been prepared to cut them.

mhaddog – I think TBB is right in that neither Hoops or Stokesy are 30 goals a season strikers, but I have high hopes for Gary.
We need a big, mobile, target man who can play the lone striker role or link up with GH or AS….problem is we can’t feckin afford him!
My solution was to sell Ki, but that was before we lost Beram and I wouldn’t trust PL to make all the funds available to PL for said striker.

I can’t recall seeing him run away from any defender. Quite the contrary. The wee legs go like the clappers, but they don’t cover much ground.
Maybe my memory is simply failing of course.

I’m no expert but IMO, in a word, probly… but I don’t see him as a classic poet. He doesn’t use standard poetry techniques, and is very light on metaphor. But if you take him as a story-teller and forget some of the snobbery that goes around, he’s mighty fine.
However, its the song I enjoy the best, and that song – to my taste – is sublime, speshly sung by wee Eddie

I can’t disagree with the relative similarity betwixt the strikers you mention.
Neither can I forget the impact of great strikers like Henke, Hartson and Sutton.
These were the great strikers of my era.
Interesting that the most successful by far of this troika was the diamond in the rough, picked up for a song.
We are unlikely to achieve that level of return again.
On projects, I also agree.
Hoops and Bangura are projects enough.
I’d try and tease out an under-the-radar target man in his mid to late 20’s.
A target man capable of 20+ goals a season won’t guarantee a title but he sure would help matters…

Is it possible that the days of 30+ goals a season strikers are gone as a result of the way poor SPL defences line up.
Until 5-10 years ago opposition in domestic football always played 2 up front, even at Parkhead. With the introduction of 11 men behind the baw negativity, it’s hard to see anyone being so productive any time soon.

Some good comments on here tonight – interesting points of view, I especially liked The Battered Bunnets one from an hour or so ago in response to Sydney Tim. Very balanced and articulate.
The goings on in the Barca match put hun games into a poor perspective – all the skill, passion plus all the aggression that would allegedly have a Celtic or Rangers player arrested for..!
The strong, mobile target man we all seem to be in agreement we need is a signing which simply wont happen.
Sure we might get a Chris Killen or a heaven forbid another Daryl Murphy but the players who carry those physical attributes and the players who also know how to make the most out of those attributes are ‘experienced’ professionals.
They are in their late 20’s or early 30’s and not the ‘intellectual purchases’ Lawwell spoke of at the last AGM.
Todays Celtic wouldnt buy Chris Sutton (if he was available for the same money) or a John Hartson – its all about re-sale value, how much more revenue would that player be responsible for bringing into the club through success on the pitch, compared to the next target down the list etc
‘Intellectual purchases’ – theres a phrase I think will haunt you and I.
I could ofcourse be completely wrong and would gladly eat a toli pie if wrong!

An interesting observation on our strike force.
I tend to judge strikers not by the quantity but the opposition.
Scott McDonald scored at Ipox and against Manure – both of which are good enough for me.
Hooper has also scored at Ipox, and whilst I would like to see him attack the ball in the box, I think he is a player capable of scoring in big games.
Zurawski , I didn’t rate – too many of his goals were against wee teams.
Hat -tricks against Dunfermline or Peterhead may win you a match ball, but , not a lot more.
Stokesy, I am not sure about – big heart, went south too young, and has probably found his level at SPL .
Only my opinion, of course.

TBB, I don’t have names for you, But I have certainly seen him do it. Remember he needs to be a couple of yards behind the defender not to be flagged offside.
