Celtic’s £50m income advantage and overinvestment

994

I’ve seen a bit of chat on where Dave King’s promised overinvestment is, since Celtic humbled his team on Saturday. Let’s be clear, Newco are overinvesting.

Senderos, Barton, Hill, Kranjcar are all earning over £750k, Barton significantly so. They signed a further seven during the transfer window. Running costs are eye-wateringly high for a club without significant income streams from Europe, television or merchandising.

The £30m PR bluster, which the new board used while trying to unseat the Easdales, can now be seen for what it was, but this level of expenditure is pretty much as high as is practically possible without a lunatic Sugar Daddy. In fact, if we were running with similar numbers, I would screaming at you that we need to cut back for fear of insolvency.

Four years ago someone in the game suggested to me the Rangers group of clubs were fatally wounded, despite selling over 30,000 season tickets for the Third Division. The reasoning being that the brand depends on an air of success, and would crumble under sustained, unrelenting, mediocrity.

I’ve been saying for four years, most people haven’t began to realise the far reaching consequence of what happened in 2012. “Getting back” (sic.) isn’t about reaching top flight football, it’s about having the budget to be able to compete with Celtic, who could turnover around £50m more than Newco this season.

Where do you even begin to tackle a problem like that?

No Sugar Daddy will make the multi-season investment required. Insolvency remains a real danger for any club running a deficit in double-digit percentages of its turnover, without robust borrowing in place (or a genuine billionaire acting as backstop, if required).

The non-football costs of running a club at Ibrox and Murray Park (an albatross) are significant and comparable to costs at Celtic Park and Lennoxtown. This leaves income available for football comparable with Hearts, Aberdeen Hibs and Dundee United.

The real conundrum is, do you accept your place and live within your means, or risk insolvency trying to catch Celtic? I don’t think either scenario is a viable option. You can make your own mind up about the viability of the football club.

I’ve not mentioned the toilets on Saturday, which is no more than you expect, but I did expect better than the dummies (which have been shamefully exploited to represent something they were not). Could the Seville experience happen now? Nope. This should concern us all.

  1. There is no point in complaining that they are using the dolls and banners as a distraction, it was a gift for them. Real own goal – fact.

You do know I was only jokin ?

Let them deflect. Like they tried to with their mince defence in the lead up to the Hibees victory.

  3. TOSB, Think they were saying there was a banner with KAH on it which they were interpreting as Kill All Huns, I didn’t notice any KAH banner in the coverage I watched but then again I didn’t see the dolls either until the pics began to appear post match.

Maybe it could all work out well, if they ban us from the Bigot Dome and we ban them from Paradise, we would never have to look at their ugly faces again. How bad would that be.

  4. The issue with the sex dolls.Who said they were Celtic supporters. More like pre planned deflection from some pr outfit. If you know your clients supporters are going to screw up what’s up your sleeve to try and balance things in the media.

  5. If it wasn’t the dolls it would have been the banner

If it wasn’t the banner it would have been a song

If it wasn’t a song it would have been a post on facebook

If it wasn’t a post on facebook it would have been a twitter feed

If it wasn’t a twitter feed it would have been “overheard in the pub”

While Celtic are top of the league and getting ready to play Barcelona in the Champions League the tribute act can fake their moral outrage and forget how much Ex con Barton is getting paid…

  6. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

    Corky..,

I’ve no intention of directing vitriol, never have, in the main I agree with you but when this thing went up yesterday, it was initially directed for interpretation as a dig at suicide and as usual out come the self righteous sanctimonious mob all over it from that perspective, dragging in mental health and flying off on all sorts of tangents, tripping over themselves and each other to condemn it. Even after the hands tied behind the backs were pointed out. That showed me a complete lack of critical analysis from the off. Some have seen this and stood back others have simply carried that initial outrage on to whatever they could to justify maintaining that outrage. No Hun meeja hack could possibly refuse such a gift. Celtic supporters condemning a juvenile taseless prank as if it was real people on the end of those ropes ffs. And that’s all the lead they wanted they sowed the seed and let the useful idiots do the rest.

Think about it for a minute, what if instead of all the mad outrage the most written about it was “stupid boys should know better, it’s no nice and it’s no becoming of a Celtic supporter” and everyone agreed with that, instead we got people falling over themselves to be more outrag d than the last.

  7. I think the hanging prank was idiotic but had the dolls truly represented Sevco supporters, they would have been blown up out of all proportion. :-)

  9. Somebody better tell Keevins and the rest that Broonie played most of last season injured, was rested as soon as the league was won, had a good pre-season and has now stopped playing for this wonderful country’s national team.

Broonie would be better this season even if Warburton was our manager.

  11. After coming through a tough set of qualifiers it’s fight or flight time for Celtic in the Nou Camp tomorrow night – coming face to face with Barcelona without doubt the most awesome opponents in the Champions Lge. No doubt we are going to see how good or bad De Vires is if selected, he will have a busy night in store . We played some great football on Saturday and a repeat performance will do but of course we know mighty Barca will not allow this to happen. Brendan will probably go with the same team sellected on Saturday. We can hope for the best, it’s going to be a long night

  12. CANAMALAR IT LOOKS LIKE OCD OBSESSION:

And I ask AGAIN, you who is so quick to condemn our Celtic-hating media.

If we HADN’T written about it, you’re telling me they’d have IGNORED IT?

There’s where your argument – whatever your argument is – falls UTTERLY on its arse.

  13. FRAMBO11:

How sweet it is to have seen that coming.

He can see the writing on the wall as well as anyone. That’s why he, too, is having a hysterical rant on their official site tonight.

    No more just doing enough.

  15. Let’s put this thing to bed:

Gallows Humour – grim and ironical humour in a desperate or hopeless situation. Oxford Dictionary.

1989 – burning effigies of Judas & Souness (scarves & s/tkts) for signing a Catholic.

1994 – *SMSM full hearse preceded by undertaker at CP.

    2011 – *Leckie ‘Coughgate’.

2012 – *SMSM various RFC coffins/wreaths following Liquidation.

2012 – Bomber Brown (show us the deeds) – hanging blow-up effigies depicting Murray/Whyte/Green in Edmiston Drive.

Note: this list is not exhaustive and doesn’t include; a RFC (IL) sectarian and racist songbook and references to; child abuse and mocking and threatening Prominent Catholics and CFC Employees.

*A Media pontificating today – when they have been responsible for instigating and stoking the flames at every opportunity to sell copy for years whilst pandering to and ignoring ingrained bigotry.

My thoughts: It was crass and ill-advised. All it succeeded in doing was to give them and L5 a ‘get out of jail’ card to deflect from; the football thrashing they received, their sectarian songbook and the wanton vandalism to the stadium.

    Whataboutery gets a 1-1 draw! :-(

  17. Hopefully this sham outrage will result in only home fans being able to attend games between Celtic 1888 and Sevco Rangers 2012.They are a malevolent presence and I don’t like them being in our home. And who really wants to risk attending the No Maintenance Arena.

Honestly, let’s just laugh at Sevco and their pitiful, futile attempts at deflection. It’s an insult to the intelligence that only the average Hun or West of Scotland hack (not mutually exclusive groups) could fail to see through.

In other news, I think the Magic Twat is unraveling at the first sign of serious pressure. I don’t think yer man has the resilience needed to cope with the gig. Echoes of Kevin Keegan in his comments to the Sevco website: https://youtu.be/_Yenzdq5g6o

Let’s just keep laughing at them. Humour not the hostility some of our banners displayed on Saturday. Hostility is their turf. It’s being laughed at they can’t take.

  20. Shutting down the “dolls” related commentaries might be a step in the right direction; no? Done by some stupid plonkers, who are by far, not at all representative of our support. We can be our own worst enemies at times, so recommend we desist. We had so much to be proud of on Saturday (buried them on the park); no need to further feed the horrible, bigoted SMSM.

  21. Canamalar

I don’t think I saw many trying to associate it with suicide, kris boy des bro, or national cuisine week on here or on my Twitter. One or two created those implications but most, disagreed with it and in my case I thought it was just plain Hunnish.

With or without Celtic supporters so called “faux offence” this would have been the story today.

L5, The bigoted sectarian zombies and their wee died club year would have made sure of that through their puppets.

    MWD

  22. Anyone expecting a fair or balanced media in Scotland is deluding themselves.

Only those who brought in the dolls know what was intended by using them.

The zombies are in big trouble on and off the park and desperately need to keep the hard core bigots turning up and paying money to keep them going.

After the cup final they immediately came out with the fabricated story of all their players being attacked. Their compliant stooges in the media carried that story even though the wives and girlfriends of the players refuted the lie almost immediately!

This bastard club was the creation of those at the SFA and SPFL who believed the game in Scotland needed them.

CFC should just stand back and let them deal with their unruly toddler.

We are never going to get a sympathetic hearing from a media that takes their instructions from the bigotdome, so why bother?

Take action on what we can and keep our own house in order, so investigate the doll nonsense but the rest is just fabricated tosh!

  23. Brendan was very cute in his presser, bigging up Suarez to the highest degree. I remember Ferguson doing a similar thing with Ronaldo when he went back to Old Trafford. It’s like a reverse way of talking them off their games.

  24. PeterLatchfordsBelly on

Be good to see De Vries getting his hands tested tomorrow. I know Brendan brought him in because of his good feet, but Sevco took it to extremes on Saturday by refusing to give him the chance to handle the ball in the whole game.

  25. Canamalar, I was one of the first to make the point here that you can’t tie your own hands behind your back & commit suicide so that was never an issue with me. Some ghuys did major about that here & yes they were wrong.

I totally agree if it wasn’t the dolls it would be something else, they came out with another crazy outburst after Hibs beat them in the Cup semi.

To be honest I feel certain that people in authority in the Police & in the SFA are no fools, they must be shaking their heads at all these Statements and they know the real score.

It’s the usual storm in a tea-cup it will be quickly forgotten in a couple of days and we will all move on.

I am actually annoying myself talking about it so will someone please make a good post about the Barca game and we can all follow suit.

All i’d suggest is get rid of the IP blocker you already have and go with the one i gave you.

  30. Anyone want to talk about the Barcelona v Celtic champions league game tomorrow, or are you happy to keep ramping it up for level 5.

    28/1 the hoops any takers?

  31. They’re just bealing that they couldn’t bring the two ‘dolls’ on as subs for Senderos and Kiernan. If it wasn’t that it would have been a banner, a song, a refereeing decision, it no being fair because we’re too good for them. The realisation is dawning that they’re light years behind us and the gap will only get wider. Not long until they’re renamed The Sevco, or The The Rangers.

  32. The dolls will be forgotten about come around 6pm tomorrow night. The overriding thing that shines through is their fear, you can smell it everywhere, in the SMSM, at Ibrox, on Follow Follow. The reality is hitting home, they are facing a Celtic Monster that they can’t lay a glove on. Their supposed outrage is driven by fear and the anger of being helpless to do anything about it.
