Celtic’s £50m income advantage and overinvestment

994

I’ve seen a bit of chat on where Dave King’s promised overinvestment is, since Celtic humbled his team on Saturday. Let’s be clear, Newco are overinvesting.

Senderos, Barton, Hill, Kranjcar are all earning over £750k, Barton significantly so. They signed a further seven during the transfer window. Running costs are eye-wateringly high for a club without significant income streams from Europe, television or merchandising.

The £30m PR bluster, which the new board used while trying to unseat the Easdales, can now be seen for what it was, but this level of expenditure is pretty much as high as is practically possible without a lunatic Sugar Daddy. In fact, if we were running with similar numbers, I would screaming at you that we need to cut back for fear of insolvency.

Four years ago someone in the game suggested to me the Rangers group of clubs were fatally wounded, despite selling over 30,000 season tickets for the Third Division. The reasoning being that the brand depends on an air of success, and would crumble under sustained, unrelenting, mediocrity.

I’ve been saying for four years, most people haven’t began to realise the far reaching consequence of what happened in 2012. “Getting back” (sic.) isn’t about reaching top flight football, it’s about having the budget to be able to compete with Celtic, who could turnover around £50m more than Newco this season.

Where do you even begin to tackle a problem like that?

No Sugar Daddy will make the multi-season investment required. Insolvency remains a real danger for any club running a deficit in double-digit percentages of its turnover, without robust borrowing in place (or a genuine billionaire acting as backstop, if required).

The non-football costs of running a club at Ibrox and Murray Park (an albatross) are significant and comparable to costs at Celtic Park and Lennoxtown. This leaves income available for football comparable with Hearts, Aberdeen Hibs and Dundee United.

The real conundrum is, do you accept your place and live within your means, or risk insolvency trying to catch Celtic? I don’t think either scenario is a viable option. You can make your own mind up about the viability of the football club.

I’ve not mentioned the toilets on Saturday, which is no more than you expect, but I did expect better than the dummies (which have been shamefully exploited to represent something they were not). Could the Seville experience happen now? Nope. This should concern us all.

  1. James Forrest. Here’s the thing.

We cannot and will not win a Scottish PR war.

Scotland is a racist country. Acts of stupidness from Celtic supporters will be turned into something they aren’t.

Acts of racism will be ignored (and in the case of the why don’t you go home song, justified by our state broadcaster as banter).

While Scotland is the way it is nothing will never ever change. The folk who run Celtic have abandoned us completely for their own ends.

Appeasement in any form will simply exacerbate our position.

Ah well eh. This is what we signed up for. Let’s enjoy the ride.

  2. One hour into Ssb and not one mention of a brilliant result for Celtic. Not one good word about the fantastic Celtic support. Then we had that well prepared script from keevins ,66 years living in Glasgow he says then I’m sure he has plenty of stories he can recall about the bigotry that emanated from Edmonton drive.

  3. I’d rather thems had dangled a couple of dolls rather than wreck our toilets and fill the ether with vile, bilious songs of hate.

A diverting tempest in a teacup.

    JF,

You taking time of handing out pitchforks and torches, it’s no my fault your too full of shit and self importance to see what most with more than a halfwit could see what was coming. You were warned and you kept on shouting and exactly what was predicted is reality.

You fell for the suicide squad shite then realised it couldn’t be but were already too invested so tried to justify your original outrage by expanding it to lynching. It was a prank in bad taste that was all it was, and you made it more than that what an absolute douche and you still refuse to accept you were being used. Stupid ha have a look in the mirror ya halfwit.

  7. Celtic should now start having 2 separate press conferences.

1 for reporters and media outlets who have an honest interest in the club and another for the dishonest L5 reporters and media outlets were they get the sum total of 1 word answers, either Yes or No and if aQ is asked that requires a more thorough response they get a shrug of shoulders. I include Sky Sports in this mob, DR, The Sun, Clyde etc.

Mate I KNOW we won’t win a PR war in Scotland, but that’s the beautiful thing about the Net. We’re doing our wee dance in full view of the whole world.

You know that tonight Sevco is trying to attack us through our advertisers and sponsors?

You think their PR people weren’t writing their press releases and statements and filling the inboxes of every journalist in this country before this morning?

But we were MILES in front of this story, and got on the record well before they did. My own article will be the most widely read, widely distributed, thing I write this week and the number of comments on it across all media is a GREAT reflection on this Family as a whole.

In contrast is their outpouring of lunacy over it. Utter lunacy. I know how Scotland views us, and this. Two heads of the same coin, and all that crap. I know if they didn’t have issues to write about they’d simple invent them, as they’ve done before and before and before.

But this one, it’s stopped DEAD in its tracks. It’s got nowhere to go. Between their club and their supporters organisations, they’d have the rest of the world believing our entire support are sectarian goons, taunting and abusing their poor wee innocent souls …

But it simply does not stand up to the slightest outside examination. And it never did.

This isn’t about moral high ground, and it’s not about PR. Speaking for myself, I was angry and still am by those dolls. But in PR terms, we got there first and nipped their story in the knackers. No whatabouttery, no moral equivalence, just straightforward condemnation.

The Scottish media has it’s one day story. They’ll enjoy it. They always do.

But over the course, the damage to them will far exceed the pin-prick this gave us today. I’m not worried about it, not in the slightest. They are crumbling on and off the park. Their reaction to this, and to every other setback of recent years … you watched Narcos yet?

They are Pablo Escobar, lashing out at whoever he can because it’s all slipping away and they know it.

get pumped 5-1,and were all talking about sex dolls.

I’m off, might log on the morra,we have a game apparently.

  11. Canamalar, Can’t agree with you on this one. It wasn’t CQN who created the problem. There were online pics & threads on the Dark Sides sites prior to it being discussed here.

The Celts who are to blame are they couple of idiots behind the prank. They were wrong, it was in bad taste and it let us down. To be honest I didn’t like the “Know your place Hun Scum” banner either and before you direct your vitriol at me, I’m a 68 yr old veteran of a lifetime of revolutionary involvement and am not into Hun Appeasement or bowing the knee to Orange Barstewards or The Establishment.

I loved Saturday, I loved the Support, the Singing Section and the display of the team.

The two things I mentioned above, I could have done without.

If it wasn’t the dolls it would be something else.

The sore losers always find their get outta jail free card. The Scottish Cup Final when they Hibsed it & now Glasgow Derby.

What has me outraged right now is this nationwide condemnation about a couple of dolls hanging from the rafters yet week in week out they sing about the savage annihilation of Catholics. Something which has been ignored for so long that it has become acceptable with Scottish Society.

I will never condemn the actions of a couple of jokers until the day the actions of an institutionally bigoted club & their fans have been given the condemnation they rightfully deserve.

Those on our side who took the dolls personally really should take a look at themselves.

It wasn’t directed at or about you. Nobody can confirm that it was about suicide – which it most likely was not considering the hands were tied behind their backs.

It was insensitive in the fact that there was no thought given for others feelings towards but pranks don’t quite come off when given a lot of thought, they become boring & unfunny the more you go over it.

I’m sure had there been any real thought given to this stunt that we would not be discussing it today or at all as it would never have happened.

Somthing that needs fought tooth and nail is the assertion that “hun” in this context equates to “protestant” as opposed to “Sevco supporter”.

Fans of every other club in the country refer to them as huns. Clubs where the protestant percentage in the fan base is greater than that of Celtic.

    Sevco-supporting is NOT a sect.

    ‘Twas always thus.

I remember a victory at Ibrox in the 90’s (very, very rare indeed during that period). I think we won 2-0. It was an incredible result given the huge gulf in class at that time. We deserved credit and a good press.

What happened? The meeja, notably the Sunday Mail, led with headlines and pictures about broken seats in the Broomloan stand.

    Hurting then, hurting now.

  18. The Scottish Football Monitor blog claims that Celtic fans had a banner saying “Kill All Huns”. Did anyone see this? I saw most of the banners but not that one. Mind you I also missed the hanging dolls.

The SFM also claim that the large banner had words from a Pro IRA song. Lazy journalism. The Foggy Dew lyric was about the Easter Rising. There was no IRA at the time of the Easter Rising. To be honest the whole article sounded like faux outrage. If the writer was a neutral, he seems uncommonly angry about events inside a stadium which didn’t involve pitch invasions or violence.

  19. A comment on the hun media site.

‘Ironic isn’t it. A group that Craig Houston is part of taking the moral high ground over something that his other wee shitty group thought was acceptable when they done it at one of their wee protests.’

  20. Dolls or banners made no difference to what was a premeditated campaign to distract bear anger from their board and team of diddies to the only group they are always guaranteed to hate more, us. Their PR companies are on overtime and some of their plants were evident in here earlier. Look back and catch the one line set ups that some on here fell for and added to. The banner on Saturday may not be far off the mark- they are treating this like war, but its a war for the bigot pound and sevco seem happy to say anything that generates this income.
