Celtic’s £50m income advantage and overinvestment

994

I’ve seen a bit of chat on where Dave King’s promised overinvestment is, since Celtic humbled his team on Saturday. Let’s be clear, Newco are overinvesting.

Senderos, Barton, Hill, Kranjcar are all earning over £750k, Barton significantly so. They signed a further seven during the transfer window. Running costs are eye-wateringly high for a club without significant income streams from Europe, television or merchandising.

The £30m PR bluster, which the new board used while trying to unseat the Easdales, can now be seen for what it was, but this level of expenditure is pretty much as high as is practically possible without a lunatic Sugar Daddy. In fact, if we were running with similar numbers, I would screaming at you that we need to cut back for fear of insolvency.

Four years ago someone in the game suggested to me the Rangers group of clubs were fatally wounded, despite selling over 30,000 season tickets for the Third Division. The reasoning being that the brand depends on an air of success, and would crumble under sustained, unrelenting, mediocrity.

I’ve been saying for four years, most people haven’t began to realise the far reaching consequence of what happened in 2012. “Getting back” (sic.) isn’t about reaching top flight football, it’s about having the budget to be able to compete with Celtic, who could turnover around £50m more than Newco this season.

Where do you even begin to tackle a problem like that?

No Sugar Daddy will make the multi-season investment required. Insolvency remains a real danger for any club running a deficit in double-digit percentages of its turnover, without robust borrowing in place (or a genuine billionaire acting as backstop, if required).

The non-football costs of running a club at Ibrox and Murray Park (an albatross) are significant and comparable to costs at Celtic Park and Lennoxtown. This leaves income available for football comparable with Hearts, Aberdeen Hibs and Dundee United.

The real conundrum is, do you accept your place and live within your means, or risk insolvency trying to catch Celtic? I don’t think either scenario is a viable option. You can make your own mind up about the viability of the football club.

I’ve not mentioned the toilets on Saturday, which is no more than you expect, but I did expect better than the dummies (which have been shamefully exploited to represent something they were not). Could the Seville experience happen now? Nope. This should concern us all.

  3. Saturdays result is history,3points is what matters,Barca game will be tough,as much as I would like us to win, which I doubt,I would settle for a draw, and I see there still a lot of Celtic Supporters, saying sevco will be finished by Christmas, well since 2012 according to a lot on here, they should have been gone, but you know what, they are still here, never under estimate the hun,I don’t

    Awe_Naw…,

I think the police statement that it is being handled internally and the police will not be involved was the boards way of telling the Hun we’ll pay for it.

  5. When the last hun was alive the clubs had an agreement that they would each pay for the damage done, so any damage their support do we pay and visa versa.

I have no idea if it’s still the same.

Seriously? The Second headline on the STV news? 2 blow up dolls branded sectarian! Dear oh dear.

Would you believe me if i said that doesn’t surprise most of us living oversea’s :-)

  8. AuroraBorealis79 on

Well, have the thinkfree few come out from under their rock to admit to explain the little stunt they pulled at the weekend?

As I really liked that wee doll on the left & reckon she would be a stunner if she were to lose that scarf, even though she does come across as a bit of an air head but I’m not too bright myself.

  9. And there you have STV leading with sevco getting tore in to some fans for shameful display of sectarian hatred…job done.

It would have been good to hear the headline Celtic thrash newco.

I only work with one sevconian, always first to have a dig when CFC get beat. I never engage with him when we win, basically because he’s an armchair supporter. He sat there this morning his paper open with a photo of one of the dummies, I stood looking over his shoulder, embarrassed and disgusted. Instead of people reading that we skelped them they are looking at pictures of dummies hanging with a deidco scarf.

Just thought I would record that James Forrest done well, one chase back and block of Lee Wallace in first half was particularly memorable.

Read previously that you said ” first time you seen them in the flesh ” or words to that effect, knowing you were conflicted what was outcome ( if I may ask )

  11. And to balance things up you would have thought STV would mention the wrecking the Toilets but hey no, that was done covertly as in away from the public gaze…nothing to see here Timmy now move along…:)

But do you know what the footballing record books will that CFC skelped newco in their first league meeting 5-1…:)

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

Just heard on the STV “News” about the Sevco statement re the banners and dummies at the game. For them to try to take the moral high ground is laughable and they are also wanting to sign the two dummies to replace Barton and Senderoff….

  13. As I understand it the damage is much more significant than shown in those photographs from inside the toilets.

The Sevco Rangers have to pay Celtic for the tickets from Saturday so will have to hand over roughly £350k shortly.

Celtic will repair the damage, putting things back together and submit a bill.

They will then give Celtic tickets for our visit there at end of the year. Celtic will sell these tickets and give them the same amount in ticket money less the damages.

Assuming that the damages are around £150k this is a significant and unexpected reduction in income for them that will hit in January.

Celtic supporters must not wreck their toilets, break seats etc as we will get a bill for that.

For a cash strapped club the big bonus of playing Celtic has lessened through their own hooligan element.

    Celtic will de

  14. Sad to see those who actually are driven by hate for all things Celtic,Irish,Catholic and basically not them, have won this one.Did we win on saturday? Was it a marvellous day for us?Did we put a massive whole in their facade?Did 50000+ Celtic fans provide a fanastic occasion?Never mind all that though, focus on a crass stunt that is in no way the worst or most nefarious thing that happened.

I’m not religious but I admire some of it’s tenets, especially the ability to forgive and show compassion and understanding.Maybe we should offer such sentiments rather than the usual condemnation and indignation.Or is that too diffucult?

There’s real badness out there, stupidity is way down the list of things to get vengeful about.Try compassion,it’s what Jesus would want.

And anyway, have we found out the intentions of those involved?Or are we finding them guilty before knowing the facts?

What a precious wee world we inhabit.

Aye we should have let them die but awe naw no huvvin that !

  17. Just beat Barca Celtic and shut these utter buffoons in the SMSM and Ipox up. I’m sure somebody stabbed an inflatable of Wullie Henderson at Hampden during the Dryburgh Cup Final back in yesteryear, that’s why they hate us so much. How secretarial was that?

  18. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

Embdy got a link for the sevco statement, reading a lot about it but nothing actually showing what they said, which is strange.

I agree regarding wee Jamesie and thought he did well, without the killer touch which you and I fear will continually elude him.
