Change needed at Premiership, Dave at it again

258

I know people are sensitive about their place in the football food chain, you and I certainly are, but when two clubs are promoted to the Scottish Premiership, only to find their managers leave before May is out, we should contemplate why?

Jack Ross finished top of the pile with St Mirren and left for a dysfunctional, but comparatively wealthy, Sunderland.  We played St Mirren in the Scottish Cup on our way to the Invincibles Treble and Brendan Rodgers suggested they were the best Scottish team we faced that season.  Ross might become a top manager, or he might be a cheap throw of the dice by Shredder Martin Bain the new chief exec, who is now working his magic as Sunderland chief exec.

Livingston lost David Hopkin this morning amid rumours he is set to take over at another English League One team, Shrewsbury Town.  On paper, Hopkin ticks boxes, albeit based on two seasons of successive promotions.

I cannot blame either manager as both will be offered deals that St Mirren and Livingston, but there is disappointment that the Premiership will be left with two significantly weakened promoted clubs.  As well as Hamilton Accies.

I hope St Mirren prosper as they have solid fundamentals and if they punch their weight will comfortably survive, but the league does not benefit from having teams smaller than St Mirren, Kilmarnock and Motherwell.

Two divisions of 10 teams sharing the bulk of SPFL commercial income, while recognising the already-semi-professional rest of the clubs as community enterprises, with play-off-only access to the second tier, would allow clubs like Falkirk and Dunfermline to share a bit more of the cake and take a longer term development view, instead of binning their youth strategies, as Falkirk just have.  Middle order clubs like these two would benefit enormously from budget predictability.  Community enterprises can be a great focus for an area, but not if a director is trying to play Fifa (reference for the youth demographic).

Another day, another Dave King statement.  ‘But, but, but……’, I paraphrase.  How to burn bridges and lose influence in one easy lesson.  He is trying very hard to put pressure on the Scottish football authorities.  It will be interesting to see if they are inhibited when it comes to dealing with Oldco’s 2011 Uefa registration.

You know I agree with most of your posts (not all), and I think you catch more than your fair share of crap for posting the inconvenient truths. So, I am reluctant to criticize… but…

I thought your post about HT was unfair. I wish the Trust had been more vocal about the cheating, and so I stop participating. But HT is clearly one of the good guys. He (and others, but we are talking about HT here) seems to have put in a huge effort to get the Act repealed. And they did.

I can understand why they would choose to focus on repealing a law that was ruining lives, rather than caring as much about money and trophies. And for that, HT and the others have my utmost respect and thanks

  2. Zidane and David Hopkin resign more or less at the same time,Livi now looking for a new manager.Too much of a coincidence if you ask me.After all Gerrard is going to attract big names to Scotland

Indeed. I was very disappointed to see Hamilton avoid relegation and Dundee Utd fail to come up.

Whilst acknowledging they are there on merit, teams like Hamilton and Livingston does the credibility of the league no favours at all. Chuck in an appalling playing surface at Kilmarnock and you have the makings of a very amateurish spectacle.

Alas the parochial nature of our country means it will always be thus and calls for meaningful reform will likely always fall on deaf ears.

Amongst other things, it is yet one more reason for Celtic to redouble efforts to play elsewhere.

In the 2 O’clock the wonderfully named Backpfeifengischt and then Ger Lyons (trainer ) has two (Lady Nathaniel in the 4.00 and Viscount Wilson in the 5.00)

I like Lyons as a trainer and he has had a great start to the season so hopefully one of the above will oblige

If not I will issue a strongly worded statement calling for more transperancy etc

  11. I agree. The so called professional leagues are stuffed with non-professional outfits. A max of 20 clubs (probably less) should be allowed to hold professional status. The rest should be regarded as having great history and be encouraged to become local community non-professional outfits as befits where they now sit in the grand order of fitba’.

Just back from seeing Weet 3, he was looking really well, and is improving daily. He was humbled to hear of your messages of support, and is frustrated with no wifi to access CQN and emails.Medics think he had a mini stroke a few days previous, which affected his vision and balance. He is comfy in his own room, and the staff are fantastic, though his physio said she thought he looked like Kenny Dalglish…. his biggest issue is trying to get movement into his left leg, but Jim is chatting away fine and positive of the path ahead.HH

  13. Less concerned about good ( potentially) managers leaving and more concerned about the fact that 3 Premiership clubs are allowed to play on plastic pitches, meaning 25% of out top flight games will not be played on grass.

That, to me at least, undermines the top flight game in Scotlandmore so than any managerial merry-go-round.

  14. Can we take it,that by their silence on the matter, that Police Scotland are happy with the segregation issues in future Celtic games at the Bigotdome.

If so,this is a disaster waiting to happen.I would really like our club to take no part in the distribution of tickets, and advise our fans not to attend.

Take some control of the situation.
