CL millions floating across Glasgow

363

Tonight, we see the conclusion of the first of two ties that don’t involve Celtic but have a significant bearing on our income and domestic competitive stance.  Union Saint-Gilloise take a 2-0 lead to Ibrox, a result that in earlier times brought an 80% success rate.  Without the away goals rule, the advantage is reduced, Union also lost heavily at the weekend.  Newco will be rightfully confident of progress.

Qualification for the Champions League play-off round is worth over £5m in prize and gate money.  Celtic stand to earn an extra £3m if Newco are eliminated at this round or the next; that money would otherwise float across Glasgow to become part of Newco’s European bounty.  More importantly, our casino-football addicted rivals would be denied expensive chips to place before the transfer window closes.  No apologies for watching CL qualification closely this year.

Just a year ago, Celtic were eliminated from the Champions League the second qualification round by Midtjylland.  The transformation between then and now could scarcely be imagined.  A year ago, it was significantly more unlikely for Newco to reach the Europa League final.  We cannot underestimate them, or the significance a Champions League windfall would have.

By the way do you really need to be fluent in Gaelic to get a ferry to the western isles?

I think you have found the crux of the matter.

For too many the migration of the 32 counties to Central Scotland plus Dundee seems to focus on the Potato Famine and nothing else.

As I was often reminded by some of the good citizens of Dalshannon Road their was a hierarchy of esteem regarding the settlers from over the water — and my two family links were relative newbies coming over in the 1880’s / 1890’s.

Economic migration over the North Channel seems to have started in earnest around 1800 and has continued ever since in some shape or form — now more of a two way street.

Not sure if the Scottish census numbers would show a big increase between 1841 and 1851 but the scenario was never just about the Potato Famine especially as the Highlands had similar if less intense problems at the same time.

We did not all move over in the one decade — it is / was a lot more complicated than that.

Locally we all blamed the Baird’s and their sectarian recruitment / settlement policies.

As with most capitalists they were equal opportunity economic rascals / screwers of the working class.

Mangled logic? From the poster who reckons poor performance on our ferry services is a direct attack on Gaelic speakers.

To quote Corkie (I think) from earlier, ya dick.

  7. P Celtic refers to the tendency of British Isles speaking Celts to begin certain words with a ‘P’ whereas other British Isles speaking Celts pronounced the same word with a ‘Q’/K/C sound.

Penn v Cenn in Celtic for example. Head in English.

Q Celtic is associated with Gaeilge/ Gaidhlig & Maininis( Manx) while P Celtic is associated with Cymraeg (Welsh), Kernoweg (Cornish) and Breithlá (Breton).

The P/Q isn’t the only distinction between the languages, it is just one distinction that linguists latched onto.

Exact borderlines of where each language was spoken 2000 years ago are impossible to ascribe.

So there you have it — my point exactly — the Picts and Strathclyders spoke Welsh while our expansionist “friends” from over the water and few islands too close to Oban spoke Erse with a Gaelic twang.

More egg chasing and less aerial hockey should be the order of the day.

Once you have Gaelic schools in Glesga — who cares about the islands?

The Park Bar will get a bit crammed but apart from that there should be no issues.

Just more space to graze sheep — its not the first time this has been tried.

    Madmitch re midfielders

    Interesting.

I’d suggest Mooy, McGregor, Hatate, O’Riley, Turnbull are the first five candidates for the any 3 from 5 consideration?

As to the best combination of 3 ?

    No idea.

I’d like someone to take some of the heavy lifting away from Calum.

IMHO – he hasn’t started the season well.

It was noticeable how his performances improved when we went 2-0 up against Aberdeen and 0-1 up at Ross County.

He really came into the games as just a footballer rather than as a captain

  17. The idea that the Picts spoke Welsh is nonesense. They may have spoken British P Celtic, which Welsh evolved from over a period of 2000 years.

    My last on this topic.

So a form of ancient Welsh then.

I wonder if they had a word for ‘corgi’.

  20. Scotland’s overall population has increased by over 200,000 in the last 10 years.

In the last two years, as a consequence of Pandemic, Scotland’s main cities have decreased population while rural areas including Islands have increased populations.

This trend is set to continue.

Access to broadband and companies (and even public sector) allowing remote working capability is now normal. People returning to the islands to live is a real thing. Three colleagues have “went home” from Glasgow to Barra, Harris and Lewis, regular updates from them sharing beautiful locations on pristine beaches, in upgraded and extended old family properties. Only one is a gaelic speaker (well singer actually)

They only care about the ferries for tourism spending. And getting back to Paradise on occasions.

As an aside, an uncle who hadnt worked in the yards in 30 years returned to his trade in Fergusons last year at the sprightly age of 60. We had a long chat last week about the ferries and the delays, and the new technology and the design changes during construction. Laying anyones personal politics aside, I would suggest the same outcome would have happened at any yard anywhere, you cannot change designs middle of the buidl programme.

  21. Almore

The Welsh were up as high as Strathclyde at one point. Probably not Picts in that area at any point

Britons were Celtic. Pre date the Gaels in Scotland

I’m not agreeing or disagreeing with any opinion above but MM is right on that – I think 🤔

  24. Ss

I think that is a brilliant trend. I took my parents up to Arisaig in 2019 as my mother’s grandparents were from there

Badly in need of people and businesses; shag all to do

The ferries need to be sorted through. Probably needs to be fully Gov as no profit for companies and the quango isn’t working. Not sure why; seems to be OK in Ireland for the western islands

  25. Coneybhoy,

The guy in charge of CalMac was on tv last night, another ferry somewhere was broken down, and passengers and goods stranded.

He got a torrid time from interviewer, but all his reasoning for poor perfromance was sound.

Ageing fleet, I think average age was 37 years old. Mend (during pandemic there were 3 ferries in greenock docks) and make do for now.

The delayed new builds were to be in service 5 years ago, now expected to deliver end 2023 (i doubt it will happen)

    what can they do ?
